A visually striking and expressive modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1949.
The painting presents a group of objects including 2 lemons, 2 pots and a red napkin laid across a table, and set against a richly coloured backdrop.
Through the masterful use of the colour gradient technique employing contrasting shades, as well as expressive and painterly brushstrokes, the three-dimensional objects are enhanced and the overall composition is full of character.
Furthermore, in leaving areas of the board exposed, the artist’s creative use of negative space demonstrates a sense of space and also draws our attention to the expressive quality of the brushstrokes.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary stained wood frame with an inner taupe window. There is some wear to the frame’s outer edges, and some surface marks to the window and frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.
