    The Parlour

    £297

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A cosy corner of a homely interior setting, painted in oil in a fairly mellow palette. A candle sits atop a sideboard, with a landscape painting handing above. A further portrait painting and a circular object hang on the wall next to it. To the left, a curtain seems to lead into a corridor or separate room, adding an element of mystery to the painting. There is a nice balance to the composition, with each object depicted seeming to own its space. The palette that the artist used is fairly restrained, with similar colours repeated throughout the composition.

The painting is housed in a white and silver frame with a linen lined border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs and a small age mark to the left edge, but overall it is in good condition.

  • Blue Road

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A brilliantly done mid century modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Here the artist has played with colour, form and texture. A row of houses have been reduced to flat coloured shapes, and the artist has used a sgraffito (scratching) technique, probably with the back of his paint brush, to create a textural effect that certainly adds depth and interest to the painting. The artist has used a very soothing, pastel colour palette which makes this painting a wonderful point to rest one’s eyes on.

The painting is housed in a simple wood frame that suits its style. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

    Size: 22 x 62 cm (including frame)

A mid century original coloured lithograph by the Italian artist Marino Marini, titled ‘Le Sacre du Printemps’, printed by the well known French printers studio Mourlot in Paris in 1973.

‘Le Sacre du Printemps’ (The Rite of Spring) is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was the source of inspiration for this artwork by Marini.

One of Italy’s most celebrated sculptors of the 20th century, Marino Marini primarily produced figurative bronze sculptures, though his practice also included paintings, drawings and etchings. Marini drew on the tradition of Etruscan and northern European sculpture, reinterpreting classical themes such as the female nude, the portrait bust, and the equestrian figure, which he combined with aspects of modernism—in particular exaggerated and elongated forms. Towards the end of his career Marini’s sometimes-monumental sculptures became increasingly abstracted. On trips to Paris and New York, he associated with Giorgio de ChiricoJean ArpMax Beckmann, and Alexander Calder, among other major modernist artists.

This coloured lithograph is housed in a simple gilt frame that suits it perfectly. The print is framed behind glass. Both print and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Flux

    £535

    Available

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A wonderfully rhythmic mid century abstract composition, painted onto board.

We get a distinct sense that the artist is painting a visual manifestation of a type of movement or motion. The artist has eliminated all naturalistic forms, concentrating instead on the trajectory and direction of the movements. The painting has a limited palette of white, black, grey and green, putting a stark emphasis on the synthesis that the artist achieves with the looped, flowing and intertwined curves. He is perhaps suggesting the passage of time as well as movement in space.

This acrylic on board is housed in its original silver frame with red undertones. There are minor stains on the top left on the painting, but the piece is in very good vintage condition overall. There are minor scuffs to the frame.

A brilliantly executed mid century vintage oil portrait, painted onto canvas and housed in a very complementary frame.

An elegant female figure with her hair up in a bun and dressed in light blue sits patiently on a chair, with her arms folded. Her blue dress contrasts beautifully with the abstract background on red. Large, expressive swathes of red, orange and brown fill the canvas, and yet the artist has very skilfully used the background to draw attention to the figure, despite the strong colouring.

    Lady with Bowl

    £335

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A well-executed and impactful mid 20th century semi-abstract blue oil portrait, depicting a lady seated cross-legged and holding a white bowl.

The style of the painting is typically modernist in ethos, with the artist focusing on colour contrast and bold outlines to create this outstanding portrait.

A restrained palette comprising shades from blue to grey fill the painting; and distinct blocks of these contrasting colours have been used to make out this composition.

Swift and painterly brushstrokes have been executed in an almost forceful manner, creating thick layers of paint (impasto) that add a striking textured effect and a sense of three dimensionality to the work overall.

A vibrant and striking mid century oil painting depicting a group of bedouins gathering together and surrounded by lush greenery.

Through the use of swift and confident brushstrokes, rich and vivid colours layer upon one another to reveal the respective forms, whilst creating an outstanding textural and lively feel to the piece.

A striking and wonderfully textured mid century abstract mixed media on canvas.

Here the artist has used oil paint mixed with an aggregate to create a sand like texture on the surface of the painting, which has added another layer of depth to the work. The artist has applied large swathes of colour in an expressive manner. We can imagine his brush dancing across the surface of the canvas as it makes its long and gestural marks. The beauty of the abstract nature of this composition is that it can bring to mind several different things depending on the viewer and their experiences, and for us it evokes memories around cliffs and the oceans.

The painting is housed in a thin wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Red Shoes

    £280

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A charming mid century portrait painted in oil onto board, depicted a seated figure of a young boy.

The artist has painted the figure in an expressionist style, using a very restrained palette and bold outlines to create the composition. This simple yet striking composition shows a young boy seated, reading a book. There is a particularly raw quality to this portrait – the artist has combined an earthy palette with broad and loose brushstrokes. There is a varied style to the application of paint, with some areas loose and thin, while others thicker and with layers of impasto. The artist appears to have painted the figure quickly and with vigour, yet it is clear that his expressive strokes remained controlled and intentional. Elements of the way this has been painted are reminiscent of the fluidity and expressiveness of the art of Chinese calligraphy.

This oil on board is framed in a double window gilt frame with a linen lined border. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

This pair of modernist ‘constructivist’ three dimensional works feature cut out panels that have been painted in oil and assembled. The artist has used stripped down, geometric forms and modest materials.  They are a fine example of technical mastery and the organisation of material. Here the role of the artist as ‘painter’ has been re-imagined – the artist is an engineer wielding tools instead of a painter holding a brush. The art has been ‘built’, rather than emerging from an expressive impulse or an academic tradition. • Trellis

    £390

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking mid century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

In the centre of the composition we see thickly applied layers of paint and this area of impasto in grey and rust brown creates an initial focal point. The composition has a grid like effect, with layers of paint contrasting against each other in a myriad of ways. The crossed angles in which the paint has been applied create a distinct sense of depth to the painting, drawing our eyes further and further inward to discover the various layers. The lighter colours sit underneath the darker, earthier colours, giving it a luminous effect.

Although the picture does not depict anything identifiable, it is very expressive and emotional in its effect,  created both through the colour palette as well as the gestural way in which the paint has been applied.

The painting is housed in a dark wood frame with a linen lined border.  There are some age spots on the top left of the painting, but it is overall in good vintage condition. There are minor scuffs to the frame, commensurate with its age.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

A dynamic and well-balanced mid century landscape painting, executed in oil.

Painted in an abstract manner, the work presents a panoramic view of a sunset over sand dunes in the vast desert.

The artist has selected a naturalistic palette comprising neutral shades of sand, tan, brown and beige. The overall colour scheme evokes tranquility. The colours harmonise beautifully , and the overlapping shades create depth within the painting.

Painterly and dynamic brushstrokes have been executed swiftly, wonderfully capturing the wind-swept sand across various directions in the desert, adding a lively and luminous touch to the work. Yet there is a softness to its overall feel.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen lining. • The Dancer

    £410

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A distinctly modernist oil portrait of an African female figure in tribal dress, painted in 1959.

Deep and rich planes of colours fill the canvas, with angular forms and distinct lines building up into a semi abstract portrait. We see the figure in side profile, arms and legs in the midst of movement.  The artist teases our eye – we are unable to discern where her dress and legs end, and where the background begins. Angled planes of white surrounding the figure illuminate her  upper body, skilfully narrowing our eyes towards the main figure, before then dispersing as the body and background become indistinguishable.

The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork. Do not that some glare is present in the photographs.

This oil on board is housed in a wood frame that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are areas of light craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but is in good vintage condition overall.

An outstanding modernist style painting depicting a fishing village, dated 1955.

Muted tones of moss green, burnt sienna and blue-grey make up the palette, giving it a really lovely earthy feel, and a typical mid century vibe. The artist has skilfully managed to capture the malleable and translucent nature of the nets, but has retained a modernist ethos through the use of faceted brushstrokes and the flattening of space.

The painting is housed in a stunning olive green frame with visible wood grain and a gilt lining. The colour of the frame complements and enhances the green in the painting.

In this highly scenic view, a lake sits in the middle of a lush forest filled with trees, with mountains in the background.

Broad and swift brushstrokes fill the canvas with swathes of colours, and have been executed with great confidence and skill.

Although the energetic brushstrokes imbue the work with movement and energy, the beautiful autumnal and earthy colour palette brings an overall sense of warmth and tranquility to the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary  wood frame with an inner gilt and linen lining. Both artwork and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 56 x 65 cm (including frame)
