  • Man with Pipe

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A monumental and brilliantly executed mid century portrait in oil, painted on to canvas.

Painted in an expressionist manner, the artist captures the sitter poignantly. A refined gentleman sits at a table smoking his pipe. His surroundings have been left abstract – there is no sense of time, space or context. Each brush stroke in this large piece has been carefully considered, applied to the canvas with purpose. Every contrasting tone has its role to play, creating a sense of depth within the picture. The composition is a feast for the eyes – our eyes are encouraged to flitter and dance across the canvas surface, taking in the colours, the sitters features, the background.

This piece would be a stand out piece in any interior, due to both its size and its excellent execution.  The piece is housed in a silver frame which complements it beautifully. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

An endearing and sentimental painting depicting a pair of birds amidst snow covered branches. The palette depicts a beautiful analogy, where the warmer palette used to paint the birds is representative of the warmth of the love between them, which stands out against the cold landscape made up of a white, blue and grey.

A painting that speaks for love, companionship and support. Painted in 1945.

Housed in a stunning and very complementary deep gilt frame, both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Sublime

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A stunning and emotive impressionist painting depicting a sunrise at sea, executed in oil in 1948. The artwork celebrates the beauty of nature, and is in reminiscent of works by British landscape painter JMW Turner.

Through the careful use of light and colour, the painting displays the artist’s desire to capture the natural atmospheric elements and movement of water created at that particular moment in time.

Combining both a warm and cool palette, one can notice warm light yellows and calming cool blues shifting across the painting. The effectiveness of lighting is achieved though the use of energetic and loose brushstrokes, invigorating the work a sense of dynamism.

This oil on canvas is in good vintage condition. There are light scattered areas of craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but the paint is in very stable condition. It housed in its original mid-century gilt frame that has light wear, but this is in keeping with its overall look.

  • In the Distance

    Sold

    SOLD.

A gentle and panoramic seascape in oil, that captures the beauty and solitude of nature.

Painted in an abstract manner, the artist has chosen not to paint in realistic details and instead has rendered a hazy impression of what appears to be a boat in the middle of a vast ocean.

Using a restrained palette of cool blues, white and grey, the work captures a seamless transition of the sea and sky so wonderfully. And the quick and expressive brushstrokes create a blurry feel of that moment in time as well as add a lovely textural quality to the work.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Swash

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but delightful abstract composition painted in mixed media including oil, gouache and acrylic.

The artist has used a variety of paint application techniques to create this composition – the paint has been brushed on, pressed on (with a sponge like material), and also splattered. As a result there are non-uniform areas of pattern and texture, which gives this painting its unique appeal. Although there is an element of spontaneity to the way the paint has been applied, the choice of colours, the layering and harmony, and the combination of textures has been considered carefully.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame ,which has a linen lining and an inner gilt window. The painting has been done on card which has been laid to board. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some very minor age toning to the linen on frame, but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Above

    Sold

    SOLD.

A typically mid century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

The artist has used a bold, earthy palette of deep greens, black, dirty yellows and punctuations of white.  Although largely abstract and very much subjective in terms of what we can discern, this piece seems to allude to a topographical night time scene of a village. White houses are dotted around amongst valleys and plains, but this rolling landscape has been flattened out by the artist, distorting the sense of space and depth. Whatever one is able to discern, at the crux of it, we see a very satisfying modernist composition of shape, form and colour juxtaposed.

The painting is housed in its original mid century dark gilt frame with an inner white window. Both painting and frame are in very good condition. Please note that there is slight glare in some of the photos as they were taken under natural light.

  • Allure

    Sold

    SOLD.

An elegant and skilfully executed mid-century abstract composition, painted in oil onto board.

Abstract and non-representational in nature, the artwork focuses primarily on soothing colours, evident brushstrokes and light texture.

A restrained muted palette of white, blue, red and black have been used, and these contrasting shades have been thoughtfully laid out and layered upon one another.

The artist has confidently applied broad and painterly brushstrokes in a sweeping manner, creating a wonderful textural effect to the painting.

This charming artwork is housed in its original, and very unique, mid century frame with several windows that create a wonderful optical effect. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • At the Table

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century composition of three figures, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist has left much to the imagination – we are able to discern figures around what appears to be a table, including a figure with a very fancy hat. The artist has used a series of bold, expressive lines, in combination with large flat planes of colour, creating a semi abstract picture that does not reveal any notion of place or time. The picture carries a palpable sense of mystery, which makes it very intriguing.

The painting is housed in a wide profile wood frame with an inner gilt window which illuminates the painting. The painting has scattered areas of craquelure (as shown), and there is a small area of paint loss ( as seen in the close up photo), but as the underlying area is a dark colour, the paint loss is fairly inconspicuous. Please note that in close ups of the painting, there is some photographic glare due to the layer of varnish over the painting. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

  • Bedrock

    Sold

    SOLD.

An impressive mid century abstract painting with varying textural qualities, executed in oil onto canvas.

Abstract in nature, the artwork focuses on stylistic features including form, line, colour and texture.

Contrasting blocks of rich earthy colours including brown, yellow and blue have been applied to the surface, and the work is punctuated by bold gestural brushstrokes in the middle of the painting.

In addition to smooth layers of oil, the artist has used an aggregate on top of oil to create a unique soil resembling textural feel to the surface in the middle section, imbuing the overall work with character.

This oil on canvas has some very minor areas of paint loss, and is in overall very good vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary silver floater frame that has markings around, but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Cornflowers

    Sold

    SOLD.

A quaint mid century still life in oil depicting a jug filled with cornflowers and a single lemon beside it.

The style of the painting is reminiscent of the expressive still lifes by Modernist artist Vincent Van Gogh, particularly in the background where we see systematically arranged brushstrokes. Small, thoughtfully placed dashes of colour fill the composition, and the placement of complementary colours allow the blue of the cornflowers and the yellow of the lemon to really stand out.

Th painting has been painted on a sheet of canvas which has been mounted onto board. It is housed in an oak frame which suits it very well. There is some slight wear to the painting, commensurate for its age.  There are some scuffs and marks to the frame but this is in keeping with its overall vintage style.

  • The Bookworm

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and very elegant mid century portrait of a young male figure reading a book, painted in oil onto canvas.

The artist has left the background indiscernible, removing any notion of time, place or context. This abstraction of the background conveys the fact that the figure is fully absorbed in his book, unaware of his surroundings. Similarly, we as the viewers are also drawn into the picture, fixing our gaze on the figure. His hair neatly parted, he is dressed in a deep red sweater, his book rests on his crossed legs.

This portrait has clearly taken great artistic skill, time and consideration to execute. The colours of the painting play off each other beautifully, yet there is great balance and harmony. The deep blue of his jeans and deep red of his sweater centre the picture, while a more muted palette radiates out towards the edges.

The painting is housed in a distressed silver frame which suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition overall. The painting has some light areas of craquelure, but is stable overall. There is some slight paint loss to the lower edge (as shown in the photos) due to the frame but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • The Snail

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A bold and typically mid century 1960s abstract composition in oil, painted onto board.

Featuring cubist influences and reminiscent of the style of works by modernist artists such as Pablo Picasso, this abstract in oil comprises a series of shapes and forms in a deep and earthy palette of green, black, brown and yellow and white. The beauty of a work like this is that is very much subject to personal interpretation – one may be able to discern the shape of a snail, but this may not be the case for everyone, some may see a pair of acorns perhaps. Alternatively, it may be a purely abstract composition altogether, and not representative of anything in reality. We are able to just enjoy the fact that the group of shapes in contrasting colours have been carefully laid out,  encouraging our eyes to move across the canvas and take in the different pieces making up the puzzle.

This satisfying painting is housed in its original, and very unique, mid century frame with several windows that create a wonderful optical effect. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Twilight

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and dramatic mid century coastal landscape composition, executed in oil in a semi-abstract manner.

Upon first glance, our eyes are drawn to the left side of the painting, where we see a house set within a rocky landscape. This crescendo in the composition then eases downwards as our eyes shift across the landscape towards to the right, where we then catch a glimpse of the sea and the horizon beyond. Our eyes are then carried upwards, towards the lighter but still very moody sky.

Expressive and painterly brushstrokes fill the canvas, and the artist has used a restrained palette, focusing our attention on the dramatic composition. There is something nostalgic and mysterious about the piece that we think really sets it apart.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century frame with very detailed borders that draw our eyes inwards towards the painting.

A wonderfully textured and expressive mid century abstract painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

This painting is powerful and visually striking in appearance, as it is composed with saturated and fiery colours comprising shades of orange, red and yellow that evoke energy and warmth.

The artist has skilfully used the impasto technique – applying thick layers of paint to provide a textural dimension to the artwork. This thick accumulation of paint that lends a three-dimensional quality not only adds character to the piece, but a sense of dynamism too.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century hessian frame with an inner gilt window. There is some general wear to the hessian lining on the frame but this is only noticeable upon close inspection.

A soothing semi-abstract mid century oil painting depicting a coastal harbour. The painting is well balanced with equal visual weight as boats sit on the left on the artwork, and 2 figures strolling on a connecting boardwalk are painted on the right.

The painting demonstrates great depth and width – brought forth by the long multi-directional brushstrokes that sweep across the painting gracefully, as well as through the use of contrasting lively colour that sit beside and layer upon one another beautifully.

This oil on board is housed in a very complementary robust grainy wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Looking On

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and striking mid century oil on canvas, housed within a gorgeous wide profile wood frame.

Broad, loose brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and narrative elements are all features of this large composition.  There are several details to notice in this expressive painting  – an archipelago boat sails on the water, with a large white bird swooping towards it. A small figure in black stands to the lower central section, and to the right edge we see a the side profile of a larger figure, looking on towards the scene.

It seems that this is a memory of a scene that the artist has painted, rather than something that is taking place before him. The emotive style of brushwork and colour denotes an expression of feeling, rather than reality. The artist has gone beyond the depiction of external nature and has instead given form to an inner vision.

The raw, almost unfinished appearance, combined with the swirls of paint in rich colours bears influences of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who was also known to paint subject matter which was symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which suits it perfectly. The frame shows off its wood grain beautifully, and is further enhanced by an inner gilt window. The painting is in good vintage condition, with some minor surface scuffs and marks typical for a piece of this age. The frame has some surface paint losses to the inner window.

  • Seated in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century oil portrait, painted onto canvas and framed in its original mid century frame.

A female figure in an azure blue dress sits on a bright yellow chair. All realistic details have been omitted, drawing our attention instead to painterly elements such as shape, form and colour. Some aspects of this painting are reminiscent of figurative works by Modgliani, such as the elongation of the figure. The artist lengthens her body, keeping her torso parallel with the back of the chair, which has also been elongated, drawing our eyes downwards and creating a lovely sense of rhythm, ease, and restfulness.  Behind the sitter we see a patchwork of colour, applied so effectively that it both harmonises and connects the picture, yet still allows the figure and chair to stand out. The combination of flattened space, underlying shapes and colour harmony make up this very well executed modernist portrait.

This oil on canvas is housed in its original mid century gilt wood frame which complements the painting brilliantly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Pairing

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century modernist portrait painting, executed in oil onto board.

Physically direct and emotionally charged, two vivid and richly coloured figures stare at us straight on, their faces elongated, demarcated by bold lines and angles.  The artist has kept his palette restrained, sticking to a range of contrasting tones of blue , black, orange and green. The way in which the faces have been composed are perhaps a nod to masks of tribal art, and therefore also to the same ‘primitive’ influences that interested modernist artists like Picasso and Gauguin.

The painting is housed in a frame lined with a linen border.  There is some general wear to the painting surface (commensurate with age) – scattered surface marks and spots. There is some age toning and marks to the frame, and an area of age toning along the left edge of the frame.

A mid century landscape motif painted in oil onto board, and framed in a very complementary light blue frame.

A pair of cows rest on the rural pasture, and behind them sit two farm sheds. To the sky, brushstrokes have been applied in a very expressive manner – swirls of blue draw attention to the cloudy skies. The cows lie on the grass , also an ‘old wives” indication that rain might soon arrive. To the bottom half of the picture, short, repetitive and distinct strokes mark out the field.

  • Yellow Beads

    Sold

    SOLD.

A stunning mid century portrait in oil, painted onto board in 1944.

The artist has focused on the formal elements in this portrait, using shape and colour to create this distinctly modernist picture. Flat shapes interlock perfectly to create the headwear, body and clothes of the female figure. The artist intentionally leaves areas of the canvas showing through and makes his brushstrokes visible, reminding us that this portrait is one created out of formal elements of shape and colour painted on a two dimensional surface, as opposed to an imitation of reality. The bright and saturated colours give this painting a wonderful air of playfulness.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner off white section that has a mottled surface. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has scattered areas of paint loss but this is in keeping with the overall look of the piece.

  • On Patrol

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully playful and vibrant Swedish oil, painted on to board in 1971. The artist has worked in a Naïve style (Naïve art is characterised by childlike simplicity of execution and vision. As such it has been valued by modernists seeking to get away from what they see as the insincere sophistication of art created within the traditional system). Flattened forms, bright solid colours and simplified shapes give this painting its playful character.

Two policemen patrol the streets with friendly smiles, and around them other figures can be seen. The artist has played with scale, making the two policemen appear much larger than the other figures.

The painting is housed in simple wood frame, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Boy

    Sold

    SOLD.

An endearing and outstandingly executed portrait, rendered in oil in 1968.

Painted in an expressionist style, the artwork depicts a well-dressed young boy wearing a beret, in a seated position with his gaze facing the viewer. His silhouette has been uniquely painted with a mix of dark bold outlines as well as white strokes.

The artist shows off his painterly talents, displaying both the use of fine brushwork as well as the use of a palette knife.

Using a muted earthy colours including green, pink and yellow, he has skillfully applied layers of contrasting shades with a palette knife in swift manner to reveal depth, interest and a stunning raw and textural feel.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. It housed in its original mid century wood frame that pairs very well with the painting. The frame has some areas of marks and scuffs commensurate with its age.

  • Coastal Memories

    Sold

    SOLD.

This expressive and atmospheric mid century oil on board depicts an abstracted coastal scene with figures. There is a sketch-like quality to the painting, with the figures and structures outlined in thin black strokes, which were probably done free hand on the spot as the artist sketched ‘en plein air’.  A distinctly cool colour palette has been used, including blue, green and purple, imbuing the painting with a calming and relaxing feel. The abstracted, suffused nature of the painting gives us the sense that this is almost a hazy memory, perhaps of good times spent by the coast. There is also a rawness to the quality of the painting – we can see the distinct and coarse brush that the artist has used in many areas, where it has also created areas of impasto (where the paint is thick enough to stand proud of the surface), creating a very textured surface.

The painting is housed in a thin gilt frame, which suits the painting very well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Convergence

    Sold

    SOLD.

An emotive and raw mid 20th century abstract painting, executed in oil.

Various shades are depicted converging towards one another, almost in slow motion as the respective colours flow.

Composed with a restrained neutral earthy colour palette comprising shades of grey, green, and red – it imbues the work with a subtle and minimalist nature; however the artist has thoughtfully chosen to paint the area on the right in deep red – enhancing the emotive aspect of the work.

The swift brushstrokes add a sense of dynamism to the piece; and thick areas of paint can be seen, adding a beautiful and unique layer of texture.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary silver wood frame that has some minor marks and scuffs.

  • Quartet

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking oil on canvas depicting 4 figures in a row. Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the artist has actively eliminated any fine details and has instead chosen to use distinct  brushstrokes to form most of the picture. In fact, three quarters of the picture is made up purely of multi directional brushstrokes, without any realistic details. Having said that, the detail has instead been paid to each individual brushstroke, which gives this painting a complexity that encourages us to keep looking.

This painting is housed in a large and gorgeous mid century frame which has a wood outer border, a linen lined section, followed by a deep profile gilt window and a and inner wooden slip in white. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition. A small section of the right edge of the frame appears to have been restored.

    Size: 64 x 84cm (including frame)
