    A well executed mid century modernist figurative composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

    Depicted here are 2 figures, each in hats.  Their facial details have been intentionally left out – the artist has chosen instead to focus on the formal elements of shape, form and colour. There is a cohesive to the palette of the composition, as the background of the painting echoes the colours of the figures’ outfits.  It has been split into 3 horizontal parts, which also seem to match up with the 3 parts of the two figures (hat, head, torso).

    The movement of the artist’s brush is visible in the piece, adding to its painterly character and creating a lovely textural effect. There is a timeless and pensive vibe to the piece.

    The painting is housed in a painted wood frame. There is a very small area of paint loss to the left side of the painting as shown in the photos, but the paint layer is stable overall. The frame has some scuffing present.

  • Four Pears

    A brilliantly executed mid-century still life in oil, painted by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

    Cederberg is known for his exquisite still lifes of pears, which always capture the delightful quirkiness of this lovely fruit. He focuses on their forms, approaching the fruit and its surroundings with a modernist ethos. Both the background and objects within this picture have been painted in flat planes of colour, creating a blocky composition. There is a beautiful balance to the horizontal composition, which Cederberg is known to be adept at achieving.

    Cederberg was a Swedish artist who made his debut on the art world in Helsingborg in 1922.  Later he participated in the  Skåne Art Association Exhibition in 1926 and the  Swedish Public Art Society exhibition in Stockholm in 1941. He is represented in several public collections in Sweden.

    This brilliantly done oil is beautifully presented in a lovely wood frame and an inner linen lined border.  Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
