A very large, striking modernist Swedish artwork painted in oil onto canvas. A minimalist composition of trees on either side of a path forms this picture, painted in a very restrained palette. This piece is perhaps a preparatory study for a final painting – there is a distinct rawness to the almost monochrome palette, where paint has been applied very thinly to the canvas. Yet there remains a palpable beauty to this rawness – the distinct outlines and simplicity of the paint application allow us to focus our attention on the balance of the shapes and forms, including the way the branches of the trees weave in and out of each other, creating structure and pattern within the picture.
This original oil is housed in a beautiful distressed greenish-grey frame, which has a rough and unrefined look to it which we think suits the painting very well. This distinctly mid century abstract composition features a childlike play of form and lines that appear to be entirely un-representational of reality, and are therefore perhaps are a nod to the subconscious or nonconscious mind. Abstract pictures like these remind us of freedom, imagination and creativity. The artist has chosen not to be bound by the limits of reality, and has instead turned to ‘automatism’, which in art speak refers to creating art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process.
