The artist shows off his painterly skills – displaying his talents by using contrasting planes of colours to demonstrate a sense of depth in the work.

This oil on canvas is housed in an elegant gilt frame which complements it very well. There are small spots of surface discolouration to the right side of the painting (as seen in photos), but these are visible only upon close inspection and do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. The frame has some minor scuffing but again this is typical for its age and if anything these imperfections add an overall charm to the piece.

  • Horizon

    Sold

    SOLD.

This minimalist mid century oil on board has a typically modernist feel.  Although it is possible to discern some features in what appears to be a landscape, the artist has abstracted the forms such that this can be open to interpretation. The painting has a lovely raw matte texture, and has a distinct focus on line, shape, form and colour. The artist has used features of the landscape as inspiration for abstraction.  This painting has a ‘St Ives School’ feel to it, and is certainly reminiscent of the works by modern British artists such as Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis.

It is housed in a simple white frame that suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. Is housed in a complementary silver frame with a linen lining, that suits the painting perfectly. There is a small area of surface paint loss to the frame, commensurate with its age (shown in photos).

  • Expression

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A mid century Swedish painting executed in the abstract expressionist style. Abstract expressionism is characterised by gestural brush-strokes, and the impression of spontaneity, and is expressive and emotional in its effect. In this painting, a range of bright and striking colours have been applied in various ways – we se areas of brush work, areas of splatter, scratching, and areas of application with a palette knife. These varying applications combined with several areas of thick impasto (where the paint is applied thickly enough to stand proud from the surface) have created this dynamic and energetic composition.

The painting is housed in a simple wooden frame which suits it well. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

A charming modernist painting in oil of a figure by a table. The artist has used large, flat planes of colour to create this composition. Realistic details have been intentionally left out, and focus has instead been paid attention to form, shape and colour. Interestingly, the artist has chosen to paint the tulips in a much more realistic manner, creating a distinct contrast and pop of colour against the rest of the more angular, flat composition.

  • Stockholm

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A bold and striking landscape view of Stockholm, painted in oil onto canvas. It is evident from the dynamism within the painting that the artist was very captivated by the landscape before him, expressing his own sensations through line and colour. The bold earthy tones of the houses and buildings communicates its physical man-made hardness against the softer, cooler palette of the river running through the city. An artwork like this one is distinctly reminiscent of the landscape paintings by the Modernist artist Paul Cézanne.

The painting is housed in an excellent distressed wood and gilt frame, which has a deep and robust profile. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Moored

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking expressionist oil of a moored boat. Thick, bold, and unrefined brushstrokes imbue this painting with palpable energy and dynamism, and we are able to feel the artist’s spontaneity and energy coming through the canvas. It is quite likely that this artwork has been painted en plein air (where the artist works outdoors and has to therefore capture the landscape quickly). Areas of the canvas surface can be seen, and it is precisely this roughness and rawness that gives this painting its character.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame which complements it very well. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs but this certainly does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

  • The Trees

    Sold

    SOLD

Free domestic (UK) shipping. As this painting is very large, it is unlikely that we will be able to ship it internationally. If you are very interested and are located outside of the UK, contact us and we will see what we can do.

A very large, striking modernist Swedish artwork painted in oil onto canvas. A minimalist composition of trees on either side of a path forms this picture, painted in a very restrained palette. This piece is perhaps a preparatory study for a final painting – there is a distinct rawness to the almost monochrome palette, where paint has been applied very thinly to the canvas.  Yet there remains a palpable beauty to this rawness – the distinct outlines and simplicity of the paint application allow us to focus our attention on the balance of the shapes and forms, including the way the branches of the trees weave in and out of each other, creating structure and pattern within the picture.

This original oil is housed in a beautiful distressed greenish-grey frame, which has a rough and unrefined look to it which we think suits the painting very well. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is in a ‘distressed’ style and so has imperfections that are intentional. The frame is slightly big for the canvas and so there is a slight gap between the canvas and the frame but this gap is very minimal.

Painted in 1959, this seascape in oil has a typically mid century modern feel. Geometric shapes rendered in warm tones of red, blue, and grey form this compositionally balanced nautical seascape. Bold brushwork and palette make up the foreground of the piece, with the paint getting thinner and cooler in tone as it recedes into the background, even allowing the substrate to show through in areas. There is a real tactile quality to this almost abstract painting.

An outstanding oil painting that explores the concepts of minimalism and abstraction.

The artwork depicts a group of sheep situated in between 2 large trees in an orangey yellow landscape setting, where all forms presented are spontaneously outlined in thin black lines.

Upon first glance, this work may be recognised for its childlike simplicity. However as we take time to explore the painting further, we notice that the artist has thoughtfully chosen to eliminate non essentials – focusing our attention to the beautiful essence of colour as well as the qualities of lines that may come across as simplistic but inherently powerful enough to give rise to forms.

This oil on canvas is housed in a grey frame that complements the painting wonderfully. Both artwork and painting are in excellent vintage condition.

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A stunning mid century Swedish oil on board, painted in 1964. A group of 3 bedouins sit to the right, with a single standing figure forming the focus of the composition to the right. In a typically modernist style, the artist has abstracted both the figures and the landscapes, using blocks of contrasting colour to create depth and a sense of space. The striking blue of the figures’ headscarves and robes contrast beautifully against the sandy browns and greys of the desert landscape. There is a wonderful stillness to the piece which adds to its striking composition.

  • A Memory

    Sold

    SOLD.

This distinctly mid century abstract composition features a childlike play of form and lines that appear to be entirely un-representational of reality, and are therefore perhaps are a nod to the subconscious or nonconscious mind. Abstract pictures like these remind us of freedom, imagination and creativity. The artist has chosen not to be bound by the limits of reality, and has instead turned to ‘automatism’, which in art speak refers to creating art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process. This painting is reminiscent of the works by Joan Miro, who was also an artist who delved into ‘automatism’ in his works.

The wonderful thing about paintings like these is that we can have wholly subjective views on what we see. For instance, this painting could remind us of planets, comets and stars dotted across the universe, and yet on the other hand perhaps we could instead be reminded of more earth bound materials such as fossils and rock striations.

A really unique semi-abstract oil painting of a hare in an autumnal landscape. One could be forgiven for missing the hare on first glance, as it almost blends into the grassy landscape. The artist has managed to convey the reality of catching a fleeting sight of a hare leaping through the grassy meadow – one blink and you’ll miss the little creature. Expressive brushstrokes in earthy colours of orange, rusty browns and reds, and greys and greens form the majority of the picture, with the stunningly painted hare starkly in the middle – its white ears and tail stand out from the background, drawing our attention lest we miss it.
