    Flat planes of colour in a myriad of angles create this very distinctly modernist interior. The traditional method of using perspective to create depth has been intentionally ignored, with the artist focusing instead on using complementary colours and geometric shapes to create a sense of space. The artist has very interestingly concentrated these formal qualities on the surfaces of the interior and its background, but has painted the objects portrayed within the interior in a much more detailed manner. The vase of flowers on the table with the bottles as well a the chair carry a different and more detailed style, which contrasts very well with the more angular shapes of the floor, walls and the view that continues outside.

    A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted onto jute canvas (also known as hessian or burlap) which has been laid down to board.

    The jute canvas on which the oil has been applied has an extra rough texture and a pronounced weave, imbuing the piece with a raw and unfinished quality that makes it very striking. The artist has intentionally incorporated the texture of the jute to its overall effect, even leaving the edges unpainted to allow it to show through. This is especially wonderful as it also gives us an insight into the artist’s process – we can feel every brush-drag, and view the base layers of paint he has used. Under the paint we are able to see the grid-like weave of the jute, as well as where the artist’s brush has skipped over its bumps, and the areas where layers of paint have built up on the high points of the weave.

    In addition to its raw quality, the painting has a luminosity that makes it very striking. Deep and rich colours have been set against the background of white, causing them to be even more pronounced. Bold outlines and distinct brushstrokes add a sense of dynamism, and geometric shapes layered one above the other give an unmistakable nod to the cubist movement.

    A large and very striking mid century abstract composition painted in oil.

    Our eyes are initially drawn towards the right side of the composition, where darker, wider and more controlled brushstrokes mark the canvas vertically. As our eyes move leftwards, these strokes become looser, less controlled and more discordant. The composition is a skilful balance of spontaneity and tight control, and conveys strong emotion and perhaps the inner impulses of the artist.

    The painting is housed in a dark gilt frame which suits it very well. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some marks, mainly to the lower edge, but these do not at all detract from the main painting.

    A large and earthy mid century landscape, painted in oil onto canvas.

    Expressive, gestural brushstrokes fill the canvas, with textured strokes creating areas of impasto that have been layered over smoother swathes of colour. A rich, autumnal palette has been used, and although no realistic details of the trees have been depicted, we get a palpable sense of the lushness of the forest. Through the use of contrasting colour the artist has skilfully conveyed a sense of depth and three dimensionality to the forested landscape.

    This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a gilt frame with red undertones, and the frame illuminates the painting. Please note that some glare is present in the photographs.

    The painting features fauvist elements, such as the unusual juxtaposition of colours as well as the highly gestural application of paint.

    A bowl and a candelabra sit along a windowsill with 3 large window panes that look out onto a plant filled view as well as  a gate and street line. The artist has skilfully used his paint and colours sparingly, yet has managed to convey such an array of elements within his abstract and gestural strokes.

    There is a wonderful diaphanous quality to this painting which makes it such a unique statement piece.

    Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this very large mid century oil has been painted onto board and depicts a standing figure painted in a modernist style.

    Large planes and blocks of colour in a deep and rich palette have been applied to the canvas, with a distinct focus on the formal qualities of shape, form and colour. The artist has used angled lines and geometric shapes to compose the figure. He has left out realistic details, and has  abstracted the portrait he has painted. He celebrates the medium of oil, leaving visible the strokes of his large paint brush, as well as creating textured areas of impasto that contrast with the smoother planes of painted areas.

    This large modernist portrait has been excellently executed, and would make a very prominent statement piece in any interior.

    The painting is housed in its original mid century grey wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs but is in good condition overall. Due to the large size and heaviness of the board, the frame will need to be handled carefully when hanging. Please note that there is some glare in the photographs as the images were taken under natural light.
