  • Seated in Orange

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A small but very striking and expressive portrait in oil, painted on board and mounted within a frame.

The artist has used a vivid combination of orange, blue and red to compose this scene of a casually seated female figure. The artist has left out the figure’s facial details, focusing instead on the form of the body, and using broad and gestural brushstrokes to create the image. There is a timelessness to the piece that would make it very versatile for any interior. It’s small size would make it a good addition to a gallery wall.

The painting is housed in a light box frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There is a mark to the lower right corner of the frame, as shown in photos.

  • Smile

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A wonderfully fun and playful original artist’s proof lithograph, signed by Leif Sylvester and inscribed ‘E.A’ (épreuve d’artiste) to the bottom.

An artist proof print has a connection to limited edition prints. These prints are used as a test print by the artist and kept for their personal collection. Traditionally the artist would take the proof straight off the printing press and amend the colours and quality. Then, once the artist was happy with the proof, they would then proceed with the limited edition print.

Artist Proofs are generally valued higher than other prints in the edition, due to the rarity and small quantity of them. Oftentimes the Artist Proof are altered from the final edition, creating a uniqueness to them that is very desirable.

This lithograph is housed behind glass in a complementary silver frame. Both print and frame are in good vintage condition.

    Size: 48 x 38 cm (including frame)

  • The Curve

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A rich and vivid mid century modernist abstract abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

In this typically mid century piece, orange, purple and black forms interlock and intertwine, creating a rhythmic pattern that is very satisfying to look at. The middle section of the composition has a vertical line of brown, splitting the composition into two halves.

This large abstract oil on canvas is housed in a gilt frame which suits the piece well and illuminates it. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is a small chip to the top right of the frame, as shown in close ups, but it does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • The Look

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century modernist portrait in charcoal and pastel, drawn in 1955.

The artist has worked boldly and confidently with his medium (charcoal and pastel), to create this striking image of a face. Hard, angular lines in deep black contrast against the pops of colour on the figure’s features. The portrait is set against a charcoal background with visible drawing marks, drawing attention to the medium and the hand drawn nature of the piece.

This wonderful modernist portrait is framed behind glass, and is housed in a brown frame with visible grain that suits the piece perfectly. Please note that the second photo (where you can see us in the picture if you look closely!) is there to show the visibility of the glass.

A brilliantly executed mid century abstract modernist oil composition, painted in 1960.

Using an earthy and mellow palette, the artist has reduced the scene before him/her down into a series of solid forms. Working under an almost cubist ethos, a range of rectangular shapes of different sizes and different angles coalesce to create this striking composition.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wide profile wood frame with visible grain and an inner linen lined border. Both frame and painting are in very good vintage condition.

  • Autumn Wood (Very Large)

    Sold

    Free UK shipping only.

A very large and very well executed mid century semi-abstract oil composition, painted onto board.

This very large painting has much to offer. Spanning 1.13metres in length, it oozes details. Thick and gestural brush strokes of paint in a myriad of autumnal colours encourage our eyes to slowly peel away each layer, taking us on a journey into the depths of this wooded landscape.

We love how the bottom half of the composition is abstract, yet perfectly captures the essence of the natural forest and its floor teeming with fallen leaves and wildlife.

The painting is housed in a really robust distressed frame that has hints of red, green and black, bringing out the colours of the painting wonderfully. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition. The frame has some general wear that is in keeping with its overall style.

  • Yellow Fields

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A large and very well executed mid century modernist landscape composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Rural fields of yellow sit underneath a light blue green sky, stretching out far into the distance. A white farmhouse sits quietly in the centre, punctuating the composition ad giving the layout its balance and harmony. Despite the majority of the composition being painted in yellow, the artist skilfully shows us how just one colour in varying tones and shades can still provide so much depth and interest. We see the broad, expressive brushstrokes marked across the canvas, capturing the movement an dynamism of the natural landscape.

This striking painting is housed in an equally striking frame, which houses it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Knitting

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautiful and atmospheric mid century oil portrait , painted onto canvas. An elderly lady sits on a chair on a balcony, with a wicker basket by her feet, quietly knitting away. The artist has used a calm, soft colour palette to create this tranquil picture, and distinct and broad brushstrokes give it depth and texture. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on form, line, shape and colour.

This oil on board is housed in its original cream and silver frame with an inner fabric lined border, which suits this painting perfectly and really brings out its palette. The painting has an area of craquelure to the top right section, but overall the paint layer is stable. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. Overall it is in good condition. There is a small loss to the upper left corner of the frame (as shown in photos) but again this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

  • The Garden

    Sold

Free UK, Europe and Singapore shipping.

A brilliantly executed mid century cubist landscape in oil, painted in 1957.

We can just about make out a group of houses or sheds with a garden in front of it, but this view has been reduced and flattened down into abstract blocks of colour. Rather than painting the view before him in realistic detail, the artist has chosen to focus instead on the formal qualities of the landscape, such as colour, line, shape, form and pattern. With expressive brushwork, the artist has skilfully used colour theory and has applied a myriad of colours that contrast but harmonise at the same time.

This very well executed painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame with an inner linen lined border. The painting is in very good condition. There is some age wear present to the frame.

  • Winter Blue

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A really striking abstract modernist composition in oil, painted in 1995.

The artist has used broad, expressive and gestural brushwork to depict this composition, using a colour palette that captures the very essence of the cold icy landscape of winter. There is a palpable sense of movement and rhythm within the work – we can imagine the artist’s hand working back and forth, creating a myriad of marks and strokes on the paper. The colours used are also fascinating to explore – as we look closely at the work, a multitude of colours that appear through the layers of paint begin to show themselves.

This oil is protected behind glass and as such, getting close up photos of the textures and depth proved tricky. The painting has wonderful areas of impasto (where the paint is applied so thickly that it stands proud from the surface), and a whole range of textural details.

This oil is housed in a white frame and is protected behind glass. Please not that some reflection of the glass is evident in the photographs. The painting has a very small area of surface paint loss when viewed close up, but due to the expressive style and colours of the piece this loss is not very noticeable. It is otherwise in a good and stable condition. The frame has some minor scuffs, commensurate with age.

  • Mix & Match

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A stunning abstract composition in oil, painted by British artist Marian Hyland. The painting is housed in a handmade frame (by the artist) which has been crafted specifically for the painting that sits within it.

Marian’s practice centres around the relationships of space, shape and colour, created by the interplay between drawing, painting and collage.

In this piece, the process of mark making and layering, informed by observations of natural environmental processes (e.g. textures and marks left behind through decay/neglect, industrial architecture/landscapes and random associations of objects and surfaces) are important factors in the work.

Her paintings evolve intuitively to find rather than make the work. She continues to build up and simplify until the composition settles cohesively.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Still Life with Bottle

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century abstract still life composition, painted in oil and dated 1954.

Featuring a wine bottle on a table top, the artist has flattened all the elements and has reconstructed this painting in an abstract manner through the use of distinct blocks of warm earthy colours as well as expressive brushstrokes.

Contrasting rich shades of brown, yellow and blue fill the canvas, and the use of broad painterly multi-directional brushstrokes adds a wonderful texture and gives the illusion of depth to the painting.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. There is a small area of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age). Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. This painting is housed in a wooden frame that has a small chip at the bottom (as shown in the images).

  • The Seamstresses

    Sold

Free UK, Europe & Singapore shipping.

A tenderly executed scene of 4 figures by townhouses, painted in oil onto board.

This mid century painting depicts three seated figures in the midst of sewing some white frabric, their backs against a white walled townhouse. A separate female figure holding a basket is also seen to the left of the composition.

The artist has left out any facial details, choosing instead to focus on the shapes, lines and forms of them. Expressive brushstrokes in non-representative colours have been applied to the canvas, creating this well balanced and very striking street scene.

There is something very restful about this piece, capturing the quiet life of a rural village and the daily activities of the people.

The painting is housed in a dark wood and gilt frame, and is in very good vintage condition. There are some minor scuffs to the frame that certainly do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Eglise

    Sold

    Free UK shipping only.

A very large, and very well executed mid century French impressionist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

This large and very textured painting depicts a view of the church of Saint-Rigomer et Sainte-Tenestine in Vaulhallen, France. Fine and angular outlines contrast brilliantly against areas of broad, expressive brushwork. To add to this, the artist has added an aggregate to some areas creating textured areas of impasto. The large size and intense detailing creates a myriad of aspects for the view to explore and enjoy. The artist has very skilfully managed to capture the ‘patina’ of the old structure, as well as the almost ‘golden’ light that is cast on the monument, using a restricted colour palette with highlights to create a sense of space, depth, and light.

This very large painting is housed in a very complementary champagne gilt frame. The painting is in good vintage condition. The frame has some minor age wear commensurate with age.

  • Paintbrushes

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed, pensive mid century modernist still life in oil, painted in 1935.

Textured, expressionist brushstrokes fill the canvas, capturing a soft light that enters this interior scene. We see two paintbrushes sitting quietly in a ceramic jug on a table, with a window behind it to its right. The artist has beautifully captured the scene – the paintbrushes have seen a day’s work, with remnants of their paint still evident on their tips. The artist has taken these simple objects as his subject, and has shown us how delicate and poignant his tools are to him.

This wonderful painting is housed in a robust frame which suits it very well. The oil painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some very minor scuffs.
