Still Life with Bottle

A brilliantly executed mid century abstract still life composition, painted in oil and dated 1954.

Featuring a wine bottle on a table top, the artist has flattened all the elements and has reconstructed this painting in an abstract manner through the use of distinct blocks of warm earthy colours as well as expressive brushstrokes.

Contrasting rich shades of brown, yellow and blue fill the canvas, and the use of broad painterly multi-directional brushstrokes adds a wonderful texture and gives the illusion of depth to the painting.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. There is a small area of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age). Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. This painting is housed in a wooden frame that has a small chip at the bottom (as shown in the images).
