In this picture, we see a a group of animals including a horse grazing on the meadow. Long, gestural brushstrokes fill the canvas with thick paint, creating a wonderfully textured effect. The artists skilful and expressive brushwork blends the paint beautifully to create the three dimensional forms of the animals. It is clear that the artist has incorporated more than just the visual scene before him – we get a sense of the way the light hits the meadow, the slight wind in the air, the movement of the sky above and the blades of the grass below.

A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted onto jute canvas (also known as hessian or burlap) which has been laid down to board.
The jute canvas on which the oil has been applied has an extra rough texture and a pronounced weave, imbuing the piece with a raw and unfinished quality that makes it very striking. The artist has intentionally incorporated the texture of the jute to its overall effect, even leaving the edges unpainted to allow it to show through. This is especially wonderful as it also gives us an insight into the artist’s process – we can feel every brush-drag, and view the base layers of paint he has used. Under the paint we are able to see the grid-like weave of the jute, as well as where the artist’s brush has skipped over its bumps, and the areas where layers of paint have built up on the high points of the weave.
In addition to its raw quality, the painting has a luminosity that makes it very striking. Deep and rich colours have been set against the background of white, causing them to be even more pronounced. Bold outlines and distinct brushstrokes add a sense of dynamism, and geometric shapes layered one above the other give an unmistakable nod to the cubist movement.
The painting is housed in a thin grey frame which suits it perfectly and adds to its modern effect. The painting is in good vintage condition. The frame has some some paint marks to its edges but adds to its overall effect and certainly does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

Reminiscent of still lifes by the well known painter Vincent Van Gogh, this floral oil also features similar characteristics such as the vibrant contrasts of complementary colours, and short and swift expressive brushwork. In this picture, we see a bouquet of dahlias sitting in an aquamarine vase, and behind that sits a green leaved potted plant. On the bottom right, a small bowl punctuates and balances out the composition. Studying the painting up close, we can see how the artist has used criss-cross brushwork to create depth and three dimensionality, as well as capture the effects of light. Measuring over a metre in both width and length, this very large abstract oil composition would certainly make for a statement piece in any interior.
The painting features large planes of colour, in a very calming palette of blue, grey, brown, white and black. As you study the painting closely, you begin to notice pops of colour within and amongst the sections, such as green, orange and red. The painting is incredibly textured, and features several areas of impasto (where the paint is applied so thickly it stands proud from the surface). We get a sense of the artist’s movement as he or she works her way across the canvas, moving left and right and up and down.
