A bold and typically mid century 1960s abstract composition in oil, painted onto board.
Featuring cubist influences and reminiscent of the style of works by modernist artists such as Pablo Picasso, this abstract in oil comprises a series of shapes and forms in a deep and earthy palette of green, black, brown and yellow and white. The beauty of a work like this is that is very much subject to personal interpretation – one may be able to discern the shape of a snail, but this may not be the case for everyone, some may see a pair of acorns perhaps. Depicted in a semi-abstract manner, a pair of potted plants sit by what appears to be window. The composition shows the artist’s interest in conveying the physicality of objects and surrounding space, and portrays cubist influences. If we focus our attention on the pots, we notice that they have been fragmented, flattened and abstracted, reduced down to geometric outlines. By breaking the objects and its surroundings down into distinct areas and planes, the artist shows us different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space, suggesting their three dimensional form rather than trying to create an illusion of depth.

We have here a kitchen scene – a cook’s ingredients are laid out on a table, ready to be prepped. A real example of why still life can be such a joy, where ordinary objects are given pride of place, drawing our attention to them when they would normally have been overlooked.
Expressionist brushstrokes are visible in this still life, reminiscent also of the still life paintings by Paul Cezanne, a renown French modernist painter.
