A very well executed mid century still life in oil, painted onto board and dated 1946.
We have here a kitchen scene – a cook’s ingredients are laid out on a table, ready to be prepped. A real example of why still life can be such a joy, where ordinary objects are given pride of place, drawing our attention to them when they would normally have been overlooked.
Expressionist brushstrokes are visible in this still life, reminiscent also of the still life paintings by Paul Cezanne, a renown French modernist painter.
We particularly like the juxtaposition of the dark coloured cast iron pan against the white of the water jug.
For us, this painting has a homely and sentimental feel – a reminder of a warm home cooked meal, and of loved ones that feed us and that are to be fed.
This painting would look wonderful hanging in a kitchen or within a dining area.
It is housed in a robust gilt frame with a dark border. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and the frame has some very minor scuffs to its edges.
