The painting depicts a simplified human figure dressed in an orange attire, in a seated position with her hands clasped in front.

  • Summer Reader

    Summer Reader

    Sold

    SOLD

A radiant mid-century figurative painting that captures a moment of leisure by the beach, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1947.

A woman sits comfortably atop a vibrant orange towel, dressed in a blue bathing suit and shaded by a straw hat, completely absorbed in her book. Behind her is a lush coastal landscape scene, where a few distant figures stroll along the beach.

The brushwork is lively and expressive, with confident, loose strokes that convey texture and movement. Bold splashes of colour—especially the warm orange of the towel and the verdant greens of the surrounding landscape—create a dynamic contrast with the cooler blue tones of the woman’s outfit and the sandy, coastal hues in the background.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary frame with an inner and outer gilt window. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some paint losses, but this is in keeping with its vintage style.

  • The Blue Vest

    The Blue Vest

    Sold

    SOLD

An excellently executed modernist oil on canvas, painted by Bo Hultén (b.1945), whose works have been presented in the Modern Museum of Art, and the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm. His work is also presented at the Gripsholm Gallery in Stockholm and the Municipal Museum in Malmö

This painting by Bo Hultén is a relatively early work. His style is reminiscent of the modernist tradition in which figures are deconstructed into basic shapes and surfaces. The geometric structure has parallels to Cubism and Post-Cubism, in which volumes and perspectives dissolve into flat fields of colour. The face is anonymous and unspecified, which enhances the abstract expression and directs the viewer’s focus to the shapes of the body and the colour composition.

The blue garment in the centre acts as a central colour point, while the dark and light contrasts create a balanced composition. The orange element in the lower left corner breaks off and adds dynamism to the painting. The background is minimalist and neutral, which makes the figure appear more clearly.

Hultén’s work can be placed within Scandinavian modernism, where an austere but poetic simplicity often occurs. His way of simplifying human figures into almost iconic forms is reminiscent of artists such as Fernand Léger or Swedish modernists such as Olle Bærtling (although Bærtling was more pronounced abstract).

The painting is presented in a wood frame which suits it perfectly. There are some marks and general age wear to painting, but it is in good condition overall. The frame has some scuffs, but is also in good condition.

  • Billy Goat

    Billy Goat

    Sold

    SOLD

A very engaging animal composition, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel, by British artist Matt Rix.

This is a charming and stylized portrayal of a billy goat,  celebrating rural or pastoral life. Its clean composition, soft tones, and expressive subject give it a warm and approachable feel.

The goat has prominent curved horns, black ears, and white facial features, with a calm and slightly bemused expression. Its legs are short and black, adding to the squat, sturdy appearance. The painting uses a limited and earthy color palette that gives it a rustic charm.

The painting is housed in a wood frame with gold trim. Both painting and frame are in very good condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.

  • Elise

    Elise

    Sold

    SOLD

An emotive and impactful figurative portrait that presents a seated female figure depicted in a heavily textured, abstract expressionist style, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1974.

The subject is shown in profile, gazing toward the left side of the canvas, with indistinct yet evocative facial features. Her dark hair contrasts against a muted, atmospheric background. The figure’s posture suggests quiet contemplation, as her hands appear to rest gently in front of her, adding a sense of stillness to the composition.

Rendered with a cool and moody palette dominated by deep blues, greys, and earth tones, the painting conveys an introspective or solemn tone. The background consists of layered, loosely applied greys, white and blues, allowing the figure to subtly emerge from the surroundings.

The brushwork is thick and gestural, with expressive impasto lending depth and raw physicality to the canvas. The artist’s energetic application of paint, particularly in the rough yet deliberate strokes defining the face and clothing, contributes to the painting’s dynamic texture and emotional weight. The overall effect is one of movement within stillness, capturing both the physicality and the fleeting essence of the subject.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. The painting has an area of paint loss at the lower half, as shown in close up. The frame has scuffs and some paint loss.

A captivating mid-century modernist still life painting that captures a carefully arranged composition of everyday objects, executed in oil onto canvas.

The colour palette consists of deep reds, purples, and earthy greens, with subtle reflections adding depth to the transparent glass and bottle.
