  • Quartet

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking oil on canvas depicting 4 figures in a row. Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the artist has actively eliminated any fine details and has instead chosen to use distinct  brushstrokes to form most of the picture. In fact, three quarters of the picture is made up purely of multi directional brushstrokes, without any realistic details. Having said that, the detail has instead been paid to each individual brushstroke, which gives this painting a complexity that encourages us to keep looking.

This painting is housed in a large and gorgeous mid century frame which has a wood outer border, a linen lined section, followed by a deep profile gilt window and a and inner wooden slip in white. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition. A small section of the right edge of the frame appears to have been restored.

    Size: 64 x 84cm (including frame)

  • Grandparents

    Sold

    SOLD.

Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this mid century piece has been painted in oil onto board and depicts two seated figures on chairs.

Large swathes of bold and vivid colour have been unabashedly applied to the canvas, and the artist has also incorporated areas of thick impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface, creating a three dimensional effect. The artist’s painterly style celebrates the medium of oil, encouraging our eyes to soak in his rich and vivid palette.

The figures don’t have facial features, and the background also does not to allude to any particular space. This gives the painting its timeless quality, and asks us instead to appreciate the qualities of form, shape and colour.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined window. There is some minor cracking to the thick impasto area (very normal due to age) but these areas are very stable. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some general wear and surface paint losses to the outermost edges of the frame, but this certainly does not detract from its overall appeal.

  • The Matador

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century gouache and watercolour figure composition, painted in 1955.

A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

Painted in both gouache and watercolour onto paper, it is framed within a card mount and a solid oak wood frame. The card mount has some slight age toning and the frame has some minor scuffs typical for its age. The painting is in good vintage condition and sits behind glass, as shown.

  • The Café

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A lively, vibrant mid century café scene painted in oil on to canvas. In the forefront of the picture, several faceless figures seat awaiting service, while behind them stand a row of cafe staff, serving drinks and preparing tables. The composition is well balanced, with four white parasols adding a sense of movement to the painting. The artist has also used several different layers of paint for the  background, creating depth and texture. Details such like the time of day or the location are indiscernible,  but there is a distinct air of light-heartedness and cheerfulness within the painting.

This  oil on canvas is housed in a robust gilt frame with a beaded design. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

This joyous portrait reminds us of the importance of having close friendships and being in good company.

  • Silhouettes

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and textured mid century oil, painted onto canvas.

This rather mysterious painting features a group of figures gathering and judging from their attire of dark robes, they appear to be monks. There is a real sense of movement within the picture, almost as if it the artist has painted a slightly blurry photograph. We get a palpable sense of the figures walking and gathering. The details of the figures such as their facial features, and the location they are at has been left out intentionally – the artist has chosen to focus on the shapes and forms of the figures, leaving only their silhouettes, juxtaposing their dark robes against the lighter white walls of the building behind them.

Thick layers of paint have been applied with both palette knife and brush, giving the picture a wonderful depth. The artist has used a restrained palette of black, blue, brown and white, which focuses our attention on the forms and figures.

The horizontally long shape of the artwork would make it an ideal piece to hang above a piece of furniture. Its restrained yet deep palette give it a flexibility, allowing it to suit both classic and modern interiors.

This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a silver frame which has some minor scuffing but this is in keeping with its age and style.

  • Mid Century Man

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and striking mid century portrait in oil, painted in 1945. Executed in a post impressionist style, the artist has used non naturalistic colours for both the figure and the background. The background has largely been painted in sections of colour blocks, creating a sense of depth through geometric shapes.

The subject matter is focused  – a single male figure with a cane stands in a street by a street lamp. He has stopped his walk and is standing casually, listening and looking to something in front of him (which could be us, the viewer). His hand is placed casually in his left pocket, legs crossed, shoulders slumped, and cigarette hanging loosely between his lips.

Although the figure has been painted in a looser and more expressive manner compared to the flat planes of the background, the artist has mirrored the colours in his suit to the colours in the background, creating a satisfying harmony within the picture.

This painting is housed in its original mid century gilt and wood frame, and is in excellent vintage condition.

  • Lady in a Black Scarf

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century modernist portrait of a lady in a black headscarf, painted onto board in 1957.

A restrained yet immensely well balanced colour palette has been used, drawing attention to the form of the subject.  Beautifully expressive brushstrokes sweep in and around the figure in pastel colours, creating a translucent, diaphanous effect. The black headscarf that wraps around the figure’s head acts as a focal point and draws the eye to the figure’s face first. Our attention is then drawn downwards  through the use of converging downward pointing brushwork in blue.

The figure’s stern expression adds character and interest to the piece, and would make for a brilliant statement piece in any interior. The light, soothing colour palette and wood frame would blend in very well in both classic and modern interiors.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame with an inner white border. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The corner joints of the frame have widened slightly but are stable and do no detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • The Nun

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed large mid century portrait of a nun, executed in oil.

Displaying elements of abstraction, the artist has flattened and modified the form of the nun, reducing it down to distinct planes of contrasting colours.

The artwork skilfully emphasises the two dimensional flatness of the canvas, and also displays the artist’s talents in harmonising geometric shapes and an array of muted pastel and earthy colours to create this beautiful work of art.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary dark grainy wood frame with an inner gilt and linen lining. There are minor marks and scuffs on the frame.

  • Allies

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid century modernist portrait of two figures, painted in oil onto board.

Angular lines, distinctive forms, contrasting tones, a restrained palette, and a matte finish are all features in this piece.

Here we have two female figures, depicted in a powerful standing stance, one staring straight at us and another looking down. Both stand with their arms folded and feet firmly on the ground, conveying a message of strength, firmness, and solidarity.

The artist has used a restrained palette, focusing instead on the juxtaposition of light and dark. Short and visible multidirectional brushmarks give this paintings its texture and depth. The artist has applied thin layers of oil to the hardboard, giving the painting an even matte finish.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame with a linen lined border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • An Encounter

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking mid century oil painting of a standing figure, painted onto canvas in a distinctly modernist style.

The artist has focussed in on a single figure – a man stands in an alley, looking straight on at us. What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.

This large and beautiful semi-abstract portrait is housed in its original mid century frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some age toning to the fabric, as shown in the photos, but this is commensurate with its age.

  • By the House

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

The first of its type to be added to our collection, this unique artwork has been made through the use of dye on fabric (also known as batik).  Handmade by the established Swedish painter and sculptor Fabian Lundqvist, this striking artwork features geometric sections in contrasting colours of a restrained palette. The artist has used varying forms and shapes to create an abstracted image of a figure by a village landscape. The distinctive style and composition of this piece is typical of the artist’s oeuvre.

The board on which the fabric is attached to is slightly uneven. There are some minor scattered surface marks to the fabric, typical for its age. The artwork is housed in a silver frame which has some minor scuffs to its edges.

  • Waiting

    Sold

    SOLD.

A thoughtful and expressive modernist style portrait, executed in oil on board.

The artwork depicts a standing female figure in a black dress, whereby the artist has intentionally chosen to leave out her facial details.

Painted in a semi abstract manner, the work is composed of scribble-like brushstrokes that have been executed swiftly and confidently; and the overall colour palette is restrained – comprising muted and neutral colour tones that instill a sense of timelessness to the piece.

This oil on board is housed in a simple white frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Chic

    Sold

    SOLD.

A joyful and visually striking semi-abstract mid century oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald, whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm as well as the Malmö Museum.

The painting depicts a silhouette of a stylishly dressed woman wearing tie, set against a well-coloured background.

A myriad of rich and bold shades have been used to create this well-balanced composition; and the artist has skilfully used several layers as well as blocks of contrasting tones to reveal form, texture and interest.

Broad and expressive brushstrokes that have been executed so confidently fill the canvas, adding a lovely texture and imbuing the work with liveliness. Furthermore, there is a layer of varnish that coats the surface of the painting. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal, whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. There are scattered areas of craquelure, and also small areas of paint loss to the lower right corner of the painting. However, this is in line with its vintage feel and does not detract from the overall charm of the painting.

Do note that some glare is evident in the photograph due to the varnish on the picture.

  • Mother

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and very unique gouache painting of a mother feeding her baby, painted in a distinctly modernist style.

The subject of the painting – a mother breastfeeding her child – is an intimate, personal one. Yet intriguingly, the style in which the artist had chosen to depict this scene seems to remove this element of intimacy, at least at first glance.  What we notice at first are the lines and shapes rather than the actual scene.  The artist has created a geometric effect within the picture, playing with shape, form, line, colour and pattern. Bold outlines in black demarcate each of the coloured sections, imbuing it with an architectural effect.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined slip.  The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some age toning to the inner section of the frame, and some minor scuffing to the outer edges. The painting is set behind a thick pane of glass.

  • Pastime

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautiful and large mid 20th century oil portrait, set in a well-decorated interior setting.

A woman is seated on a chair, deeply engaged in sewing a garment. Beside her is a glass window that portrays a scenic view overlooking a row of houses.

The style of the painting is typically modernist in ethos, with the artist focusing on colour contrasts to create a sense of depth and space.

A mix of rustic earthy colours as well as rich tones of red, yellow and blue have been used to create this tranquil picture; and the distinct and painterly multi-directional brushstrokes adds wonderful texture and character to the work.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a distressed wood frame with a deep profile and with an inner white window. There are small areas of paint loss to inner section of the frame on the left side but this does not detract from the painting.

With areas of thick impasto creating texture and three dimensionality – the work is imbued with a strong sense of movement, as one can almost feel the energy of the waves crashing down.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a thin off-white wooden frame that has some areas of marks and scuffs, which is very minor.

  • Mother & Child

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A wonderfully executed semi-abstract modernist style mixed media painting.

The artwork presents figures of a mother and child, composed from cutout geometric and angular shapes to create the respective forms.

The subject of the painting has an almost sculptural quality, reminiscent of the British Modernist artist Henry Moore, who is well known for his signature abstract forms derived from the human body in both sculptures and drawings.

In addition to the medium of oil, the artist has used an aggregate on top of oil to create this striking artwork. This piece is brimming with character, as there is an added unique textural feel to its surface.

The painting is very good vintage condition. It is housed in a gilt frame with red undertone, and of which has a distinct fractured patterning. That has some areas of minor marks and paint loss on the frame.

A cleverly executed, charming line portrait of a lady, draw in ink. Reminiscent of the line drawings of Pablo Picasso, this drawing reduces what would normally be a complicated image to powerful fluid lines.

This ink study on paper is set within a white card mount, and in a black frame with a gilt inner lining. Both drawing and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Boat Boy

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming and elegant oil painting of a young boy with his toy sailboat. Painted in broad and expressive brushstrokes, we can only just discern the main elements of the background which have been split into 3 main sections. The painting has a distinct feel of nostalgia; the way the background has been blurred out is similar to our memories of particular events. Here the moment in focus is of the boy playing with his boat – happy memories of days of youth. There is a wonderful sense of balance and harmony in this picture, the warm yellow and brown tones of the boat and the boys clothes are echoed in the sections of the background, and again in the frame of the picture.

The artwork is housed in an elegant dark wood frame with a inner gilded border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Modernist Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A typically modernist mid century portrait of a man, painted in oil onto canvas. Reminiscent of the colourist works of the Fauvist painter Henri Matisse,  this painting emphasises flattened and simplified forms, as well as expressive and non naturalistic colours. Planes of bright, contrasting colour have almost been ‘arranged’ on the canvas like a puzzle, creating the portrait that we see. This striking modernist portrait would make a real statement in any interior, but would also fit in with a ‘gallery wall’ style hang wonderfully.

The painting is housed in a dark wood frame with a bronze inner window. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Sorrow

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An emotional vintage nude oil portrait, painted in 1948. This mid century oil on board is a raw yet beautiful depiction of sadness and sorrow. A sole nude female figure sits with her head between her knees, with nothing around her except for the green stool she is seated on. Her face is concealed by her arm, adding to the idea that  sadness is a human condition experienced by many, and a reminder that we are not alone when we feel fragile or negative

The painting is housed in a distressed gilt frame with an inner white window, which suits the painting very well. The painting has areas of paint loss and flaking (perhaps an uncanny reflection of the fragility and vulnerability of the portrait in the painting).

  • La Femme

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An expressive and visually striking modernist style portrait of a female figure, executed in oil in a semi-abstract manner.

This well-balanced portrait comprises both soft and rich pastel shades of blue, purple and beige, evoking both a gentle yet lively touch feel to the painting.

Upon closer inspection of the canvas, we can see that the layering technique has been used as deep layers of contrasting colours have been applied over one another in a swift yet precise manner to form this beautiful composition.

The artist has also used the impasto technique fervently, creating a visual feast for the eyes as thick and creamy layers of paint stand proud and form a raw textural and three-dimensional effect.

This oil on canvas is housed in a thin wood frame. There are some areas of craquelure due to the thickness of the paint, but the paint layer is in very stable condition overall.

  • A Bond

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An endearing portrait of a mother braiding her child’s hair in a home setting.

The frame of this work – a white canvas surrounded by inner and outer gold windows – pairs perfectly with this piece, as it acts like an open door, allowing viewers to peer inside a room, and witness this loving scene. Both mother and daughter’s gaze are not facing the viewer, and they are happily engaging their own conversation and activity, caught unaware.

At first glance, this artwork may appear simple to one’s eye. However upon further observation, what is so remarkable is the intricate detailing of the plethora of colours used in every form in this painting – from the colourful rug, the mother’s skirt, to the child’s hair and even the walls.

Another key component is the setting of this scene that allows one to get a good perspective into this home. We are presented with a view of a living room; and the open door in the background gives us a glimpse of a kitchen. Furthermore, there are many beautiful objects all around painted so very finely and carefully – including a lamp sat on a table top and placed beside a painting (which we are given a small view of), a pot and a kettle, and a coat hung up.

This 20th century oil on panel is in excellent vintage condition.
