A really interesting and detailed oil painting of a selection of antiquities and collectables. The array of objects presented atop a white table reflect an interest in world culture and history, and perhaps even the particular interests of a scholar or explorer who might have picked up these objects on his travels. In the background hangs a patterned fabric, possibly of East Asian origin.
The artist has taken great care in capturing the varying textures of each object. For example, we are able to surmise the polished stone of the head study on the left, whose surface texture stands in contrast to the rougher finish of the tall earthenware vessel in the middle.
The painting is housed in a very unique textured wide profile frame with a mixture of finishes, included a moulded gilt inner window.
Painted in 1959, it is in very good vintage condition overall. There are some cracks in the paint that are only visible if inspected very closely, but the paint surface stable. Cracks like these are very normal for a painting of this age as the paint medium contracts over time.

In some ways a reminder of the Nude Blue cut-outs series by Henri Matisse, the nude figure in this painting has been abstracted down to a group of shapes and colours. The artist has avoided any attempt to mimic reality and has instead used blocks of soft yet contrasting colours to create a sense of space and three dimensionality. The plethora of colours used in this work is remarkable, as well as the intricate detailing of the objects lying around which include the flower pots by the window still, the white pitcher beyond the open door, as well as the pots and pans, and a colourful rug on the floor. The door that is ajar adds a sense of openness to this painting – we feel welcomed into the space, without feeling trapped or enclosed.
It comes with a unique dark wood frame with evenly spaced divots, outlining the painting beautifully.
The canvas appears to have been previously removed from a backing or stretchers and re-laid on to board, fixed down with staples. Puncture marks from the previous framing method are visible around the outer edges of the canvas, as shown. The painting itself is in excellent condition with no paint loss, and so is the frame that it is housed in.

A very large and vibrant oil painting on board with a wonderful array of details to notice. The painting almost ‘unfolds’ before us as we look at it, with lots of individual areas of detailing becoming apparent as we let our eyes wander across the picture. At first glance we notice the main scene taking place in the foreground, where a group of fishermen surround their catch of the day. Then we start to notice the other activities taking place, such as the woman spinning yarn on the right, as well as the features of the cityscape beyond. Then, almost as if to surprise us, little animals along the lower border soon reveal themselves to us – the rabbit, frog, dog with bird in mouth, and duck. Even as the picture recedes, the artist has taken great care to paint in all the details, including the cranes and factories in the far distance.
This wonderful painting with so much to offer measures 80.9 x 48.1cm. There are some areas of paint losses to the bottom of the painting but this would be easily covered by a frame.
