  • Cubist Kitchen

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A fantastic modernist still life rendered in oil in a cubist manner. Painted in 1962, the artist has used a vibrant palette and created areas of impasto (where the paint is applied thickly and stands proud from the surface) to create this striking composition. Distinct brushstrokes and bold outlines reminds us of a modernist ethos – the artist is experimenting with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction. The artist has moved away from traditional forms of perspective, and has used blocks and planes of contrasting colour to create a sense of depth within the picture.

The painting is housed a a very complementary wood frame with a painted white order. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • A New Day

    Sold

    SOLD.

A subtle and calming panoramic view of a mountainous landscape scene. Soft brushstrokes in a mix of watercolour and gouache  imbue this painting with texture and a sense of three dimensionality. The areas painted in the more opaque medium of gouache draw the eye through the layers of contrasting tones created by the artist. The painting is a wonderful reminder of the calming and restoring effect of nature and its surroundings.

The painting is housed in a washline off white card mount and a light wood frame, and is glazed, i.e. there is a sheet of glass between the frame and the artwork. There is some age toning to the card mount, typical for a picture of this age (1979). The frame and gouache are in good vintage condition.

  • Grandfather’s Music

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A heartwarming scene of a grandfather playing an accordian to his granddaughter as she sits in front of him listening in awe. The artist’s of colours and his soft strokes lends a sense of warmth and tenderness.

Apart from the narrative, there is technical skill and expertise in the artist’s handling of brush and medium. Despite the use of heavy layers of paint, the artist has managed to capture the translucency and diaphanous quality of the light curtain that hangs from the window. He has also managed to tread a fine balance between quick expressionist strokes and areas of finer detailing

This oil on canvas is housed in its original wood and painted gilt frame. It is in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 47.5 x 55.5 cm (including frame)

This painting would pair nicely with another painting of a similar size and frame which is also available in our collection. View it here.

  • Night at the Quayside

    Sold

    SOLD.

Our director Shanti shares her thoughts on this painting in this video.

This 20th century gouache painting presents a glimpse of a boat that has just docked at the quayside. Passengers have disembarked the boat, and a sailor from the boat beside can be seen peering down. The stillness from this calm composition brings back nostalgic memories of one returning back from an exciting trip out to sea, where fun for the day has come to an end as nightfall descends.

Against the darkness of the midnight sky, the artist accurately captures nearby light being cast on water ripples through thick dabs of paint. Unlike most impressionist paintings, this work is unique as it is presents a night scene, instead of a usual daytime and vibrant scene one may mostly come across.

This gouache on thick card comes framed. Overall, it is in good vintage condition that is typical for its age. There are some wears to the edges, of which are mostly covered by the frame.

    Size: 46 x 38cm (including the frame)

    Sold

    SOLD.

An iconic and attractive scene of a promenade in the marina of Alicante, Spain. Here, magnificent palm trees line the waterfront promenade, and beautiful catamarans and sailboats are docked by marina in the Mediterranean Sea. Featuring a brilliantly bold and fauvist-like colour palette, this painting is characterised by its fierce brushwork and simplification of forms. Complementary colours have been used side by side, injecting a real vibrancy and energy to the painting.

  • Mauve Mountains

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A stunning and richly textured painting of a mountainscape.  The brushwork and colour palette really convey a sense of power and strength within the natural landscape. Distinct blocks of colour and thickly applied paint with areas impasto show off the technical skill and confidence of the artist. The composition of the painting is punctuated by the double tree trunks which feature in the foregound, splitting the picture into 3 parts and thereby shifting our gaze from left to right. The sloping curve of the mountain simultaneously draws our eyes downward, encouraging us to move our attention from the mountain, to the sky, and then to the ground.

The painting is housed in a really complementary gilt frame with hints of red. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 65 x 49cm (including frame)

  • The Way Home

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A sweet painting depicting two figures on a village lane, painted in oil onto board. A very pleasant array of pastel tones has been used to create this scene, and a pink-ish purple hue seems to wash over the painting. Long and wide painterly brushstrokes draw our eyes in towards the painting and onwards to the landscape beyond. Two figures appear to be having a conversation on a country lane, perhaps saying their hellos or goodbyes, we do not know.  There is a sense of nostalgia and sentimentality with this painting, created by a combination of factors including the dreamy colour palette as well as the way in which the figures have been painted. Modernist techniques of creating space within the picture can be seen, such as the use of contrasting planes of colour rather than traditional methods of perspective.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame, with an inner linen lined border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Surprise Visit

    Sold

    SOLD.

A lively and dynamic artwork of an interior setting featuring an elderly couple sitting by a window and a young child.

It is a sunny day outside, and this little girl has come to surprise her grandparents living in the countryside with a visit. She has entered the living room in their cottage, and the air is filled with joy as they set sights on one another.

The house is well decorated with paintings hanging on the walls, some flowers in a vase placed atop a side table, and the floor is adorned with a colourful rug.

What is so captivating in this piece is the strong use of bold, distinct and linear brushstrokes, giving rise to the various forms in this picture.

This artwork is painted by Swedish artist Ake Wickström (b. 1927), who’s works are also displayed at Vikingsberg Museum, Helsingborg, and Broby Museum.

This mid 20th century oil painting is well preserved, and is in excellent vintage condition.

It comes with a brown wooden frame with gold trimmings that complements the artwork beautifully.

  • Two for Joy

    Sold

    SOLD.

Painted in 1974, this joyful oil painting depicts two magpies perched within a luscious green tree. The artist has combined textured layers of paint and a playful colour palette to create this delightful painting. Swirls of pastel blue, orange and brown contrast beautifully with the much quicker and heavier dabs of green and yellow of the leaves on the tree.  As the well known nursery rhyme goes, sighting two magpies signifies the arrival of joy and good luck.

This painting is housed within a vintage style box frame that has been painted black. The frame has minor scuffs and the painting is in excellent vintage condition.

For those that may no longer remember, here’s the famous rhyme about magpies:

    “One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret,
    Never to be told,
    Eight for a wish,
    Nine for a kiss
    Ten for a bird
    You must not miss.”

    Size: 38 x 34 cm (including frame)

  • Surreal

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

This striking oil painting in a typically mid century cubist style and colour palette is reminiscent of the modernist works by artists such as Picasso and Braque. Here a series of objects atop a table have been depicted from multiple view points, resulting in a fragmented and abstracted composition. The artist has broken the objects down into distinct planes and shapes, emphasizing the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth, while at the same time suggesting their three dimensional forms.

This oil is housed in its original mid century wood & gilt frame with a linen lined border. The artwork and frame are in very good vintage condition.

A wonderfully rendered charming still life, painted in 1969. Petite pink flowers are placed in a glass, as it sits on top of a table, alongside an empty bowl and 2 fruits. The colour palette and style of the work is playful and cheery – a nod to sunny days and good times.

Soft and fine strokes have been used paint the overall work, but the sweeping brushstrokes used to paint the creases in the yellow table runner convey a sense of movement in the work.

This painting on board is in excellent vintage condition.

    SOLD

A very pleasant mid 20th century oil on canvas presenting a magnificent panoramic view of a park and the city.

The sky is blue, and the air is crisp; as 2 friends are enjoying their picnic in the park whilst admiring the stunning view that overlooks the city.

The artist has used a vibrant colour palette, especially multiple shades of green, that imbues the work with so much life and vitality. The brushstrokes used are short and broad, with each brush mark visible and distinct.

Furthermore, the composition is highly well-balanced – with the area of lush greenery and blue sky having equal visual weight.

This oil on canvas is in good vintage condition. There are minor areas of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint) as seen in the photos, but the paint layer is stable overall. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring.

The work housed in a robust sage green frame that complements the artwork very well. There are some marks on the frame; and as it is its original frame, its joints are slightly delicate, but nevertheless, holds the painting well.

This zen winter landscape rendered in a muted palette in oil is both simple and striking.  A snow covered field stretches into the distance, its horizon lined by a row of hazy trees. Mounds of seemingly barren land peak through the thin layer of snow. But barren it is not, merely taking its chance to rest through winter before the busier season of crops begin again. Its ploughed lines extend forward into the distance – here is the earth taking a long, much needed exhalation. A reminder that we all need to take a moment or two to rest, relax and breathe from time to time.
