Two for Joy

Painted in 1974, this joyful oil painting depicts two magpies perched within a luscious green tree. The artist has combined textured layers of paint and a playful colour palette to create this delightful painting. Swirls of pastel blue, orange and brown contrast beautifully with the much quicker and heavier dabs of green and yellow of the leaves on the tree.  As the well known nursery rhyme goes, sighting two magpies signifies the arrival of joy and good luck.

This painting by Swedish artist Yngve Svedlund is housed within a vintage style box frame that has been painted black. The frame has minor scuffs and the painting is in excellent vintage condition.

For those that may no longer remember, here’s the famous rhyme about magpies:

“One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret,
Never to be told,
Eight for a wish,
Nine for a kiss
Ten for a bird
You must not miss.”
