This heartwarming scene of a grandfather playing an accordian to his granddaughter as she sits in front of him listening in awe, is typical of Swedish artist Arne Wallsten’s storytelling hand. Wallsten’s use of colours and his soft strokes lends a sense of warmth and tenderness.
Apart from the narrative, there is technical skill and expertise in the artist’s handling of brush and medium. Despite the use of heavy layers of paint, Wallsten has managed to capture the translucency and diaphanous quality of the light curtain that hangs from the window. He has also managed to tread a fine balance between quick expressionist strokes and areas of finer detailing.
Wallsten was born in 1932 in Lund. He is know for figures in interiors and exteriors, and his paintings always carry a narrative.
This oil on canvas is housed in its original wood and painted gilt frame. It is in excellent vintage condition.
Size: 47.5 x 55.57 cm (including frame)
