A delightful pair of paintings that reimagine the classic Staffordshire spaniel dogs, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.
Presented as a facing pair, they echo the traditional mantelpiece figurines of the 19th century, yet with a fresh, painterly twist.
Both dogs are shown seated upright, with white coats patterned in bold black patches that resemble stylised floral motifs. Their long, drooping black ears frame alert, soulful faces, each with bright yellow eyes and a small red mouth that add character and charm. Around their necks, the dogs wear golden collars with chain detailing, reinforcing their heritage as symbols of loyalty, companionship, and domestic pride.
The backgrounds are particularly striking: a rich blue striped wall adds depth and rhythm, while the flat grey ground anchors the figures firmly in space. The bold use of colour contrasts beautifully with the black frames, enhancing the decorative presence of the pair.
As with traditional Staffordshire dogs, one faces left and the other right, making them perfect companions. Their folk-art simplicity, flat planes of colour, and stylised forms give them a timeless, iconic appeal, at once nostalgic and contemporary.
These paintings are appealing because they strike a balance between playfulness and heritage—celebrating the charm of Staffordshire dogs while transforming them into striking, graphic artworks that would add warmth and character to any wall.
Each of these oils on board are housed in black painted wood frames with subtle gilt detailing. Both paintings are in excellent condition. The frames have some very minor scuffs but this is in keeping with their vintage style.
British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
