• Contours of the Earth

    Contours of the Earth

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating and wonderfully textured large mid-century abstract landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

Abstract in nature, the painting transports the viewer to a vast, windswept terrain, reminiscent of rugged coastlines or snow-covered plains. The composition exudes a sense of movement and fluidity, as if the landscape itself is caught in a moment of transformation.

The artist has used an expressive and dynamic impasto technique, layering thick, textured strokes to create depth and dimension. The brushstrokes are bold and confident, adding a tactile quality to the piece, while the swirling lines and undulating forms hint at the forces of nature shaping the environment.

The colour palette is a harmonious blend of muted, earthy tones – soft greys, off-whites, and hints of yellow – evoking the subdued atmosphere of a windswept wilderness. The subtle gradients of grey merge seamlessly into the creamy whites, with occasional touches of olive and beige that suggest geological formations.

The painting’s abstract nature allows for multiple interpretations, but its textured surface and organic flow invite contemplation of natural phenomena – perhaps eroded landscapes, flowing water, or windswept plains.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some scuffing present.

  • Intersecting Rhythm

    Intersecting Rhythm

    Sold

    SOLD

A dynamic mid-century abstract painting characterised by bold shapes, layered textures, and a rhythmic interplay of form and colour, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition is built from intersecting blocks and curved segments, suggesting movement and an underlying figurative tension while remaining firmly non-representational.

Executed in a robust modernist style, the work embraces the era’s embrace of spontaneity and materiality. The palette features earthy orange, muted greys, olive green, off-white, deep charcoal and small flashes of cobalt blue, brick red, and sunny yellow, creating a grounded yet energetic contrast. Thick, tactile impasto passages bring a sculptural quality to the surface, where dragged strokes, textured ridges, and deliberate scoring reveal the artist’s physical engagement with the medium.

Overall, the painting exudes strength and mid-century sophistication – a striking statement piece that celebrates form, texture, and movement.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary black painted wood frame. There is a small perforation to the canvas  as shown in the photos ( this is only visible from the back, and not from the front), but it remains stable and does not detract from the work’s overall attractiveness.

  • The Gathering Walk

    The Gathering Walk

    Sold

    SOLD

A vibrant and lively mid century painting that captures a rhythmic gathering of figures moving through a tree-lined avenue toward a distant monument, painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The scene feels communal and celebratory, suggesting a village gathering or a festival, rendered with an expressive looseness that prioritises mood and movement over precise detail.

This expressive composition balances structure and spontaneity. The figures are simplified into bold, gestural forms, while the trees rise vertically on either side, creating a natural corridor that draws the eye inward. The architectural elements in the background anchor the scene, offering a quiet sense of place amid the animated crowd.

The colour palette is vibrant and optimistic: fresh greens dominate the trees, contrasted by a striking pastel pink sky and soft blue undertones. Pops of red, coral, and cobalt animate the figures, lending energy and warmth to the composition. These colours are applied with confidence, often layered to allow underlying tones to remain visible.

Brushstrokes are thick, textured, and deliberately expressive, with visible impasto throughout. Short, dynamic strokes define the crowd, while broader, more rhythmic marks shape the trees and sky. The overall effect is playful yet composed – a joyful, human-centred work that embodies optimism.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary deep profile gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Patchwork Landscape

    Patchwork Landscape

    Sold

    SOLD

An expressive mid-century abstract landscape that presents a gently rolling countryside punctuated by a solitary red-roofed dwelling, nestled among tall, stylised trees executed in oil onto board.

The scene is composed as a patchwork of interlocking fields and winding paths, drawing the eye inward through a rhythmic, almost musical arrangement of forms. The house becomes a quiet focal point – an anchor of human presence within a broader, cultivated landscape.

The landscape has been reduced into geometric planes and simplified silhouettes. Perspective is subtly flattened, favouring structure and composition over naturalistic depth, lending the work a contemplative, design-led quality.

The colour palette is earthy and restrained: moss and olive greens, warm browns, and burnt oranges dominate the terrain, while the vivid red roof provides a striking yet balanced contrast. Soft greys and subdued blues in the background create atmosphere and spatial calm.

Brushstrokes are confident and matte, applied in broad, opaque blocks with visible edges. Rather than blending, the artist allows colours to sit alongside one another, enhancing the sense of construction and rhythm.

This oil on board is housed in a softly weathered  grey-brown tone frame with subtle warm undertones. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Sold

    SOLD

A vivid mid-century modernist abstract landscape, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition captures the dynamic energy of a frozen waterway winding through a snowy terrain beneath a dramatic sky. The artist has used broad, expressive brushstrokes and a striking palette to evoke the chill of winter and the fleeting glow of sunset.

The sky dominates the composition, rendered in bold swathes of blue and overlaid with dashes of fiery orange, crimson, and yellow, suggesting a sun just dipped below the horizon. Below, the frozen river curves with movement, painted in cool whites and icy blues, while gestural patches of green, orange, and brown represent trees and terrain along the banks. A structure and a vivid red form – perhaps a vehicle or boat – add subtle focal points within the composition.

The brushwork is loose, gestural, and tactile, creating a sense of immediacy and atmosphere.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There is a small loss to upper corner of frame as shown, but it is otherwise in very good condition.

  • Stormy Mountains

    Stormy Mountains

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed contemporary abstract composition, executed in acrylic onto canvas, by British artist Frances Daws.

Stormy Mountains is a modern landscape which captures both the drama and serenity of the open horizon. The strong gestural brushstrokes suggests a landscape of rolling hills, or sand dunes while the warm earthy tones bring about a sense of depth and movement, contrasting with the cool, blue and grey sky.

Whilst under the understanding this is an imagined landscape it invites the viewer to slow down and draw on their own memories of place.

  • Windmill on the Hill

    Windmill on the Hill

    Sold

    SOLD

A serene and elegant mid-century modernist landscape painting that presents a beautifully abstracted and minimalist landscape dominated by a solitary windmill perched on a hillside, executed in oil onto board.

The composition is built from simplified geometric forms that evoke steppe d stone terraces or clustered hillside structures, leading the eye upward toward the windmill’s delicate, linear blades. The artist has reduced the scene to its essential shapes, creating a quietly architectural interpretation of a landscape.

The sky is kept pale and understated, enhancing the sense of calm and spaciousness. The brushstrokes are smooth and controlled, with flat planes of colour applied in broad, opaque layers. Subtle variations within each block of tone add depth without breaking the minimalist feel, while the windmill’s fine, sketch-like lines introduce a contrasting delicacy.

A lively mid-century post-impressionist landscape composition, executed in oil onto board.

Small yet impactful, the painting showcases a vibrant and abstracted depiction of nature, where lush fields with rolling hills in the background have been deconstructed and simplified into blocks of contrasting shades.

Post-impressionist in nature, the artist has selected a saturated and rich palette – using colours to evoke emotion rather than merely representing the landscape. The use of expressive brushstrokes, combined with a lightly textured surface, contribute to the painting’s dynamic and emotive quality as well.

  • Quiet Pasture

    Quiet Pasture

    Sold

    SOLD

A tranquil and refined mid-century modernist abstract landscape painted in oil onto canvas.

This painting distils a pastoral scene into its most essential forms – three geometric sheep resting within an expanse of green, beneath a horizon softened by the meeting of land, sea, and sky. Two abstracted tree forms rise in the distance, their masses built from diffused tones of moss, teal, and yellow.

The artist employs a restrained and harmonious palette — muted greens merging into turquoise blues – evoking both serenity and space. Broad, matte brushstrokes and delicate transitions of tone give the surface a meditative quietness, while subtle traces of underpainting and warm orange edges reveal the artist’s hand and the passage of time.

Balancing figuration and abstraction, the work speaks to the essence of landscape – not as a literal depiction, but as an emotional and atmospheric impression of stillness, solitude, and the beauty of open space.

  • Fields in Late Summer

    Fields in Late Summer

    Sold

    SOLD.

A serene and wonderfully textured modernist style landscape composition, painted in oil onto board and dated 1972.

The painting captures the quiet rhythm of open landscape beneath a soft, pale sky. The composition unfolds in broad, horizontal sweeps of cultivated land – patches of green and yellow fields stretch toward the horizon, gently intersected by blue-tinged furrows and tree lines.

  • Grounded Figure

    Grounded Figure

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking example of mid century abstract expressionism, composed with a powerful arrangement of dark, geometric blocks layered over a pale, neutral background. It evokes a sense of architectural form and emotional depth, blending both structure and mood.

The painting is built from overlapping angular shapes, creating a central form that resembles a figure. There is a dominant vertical element that draws the eye upward, almost like a shadowy  figure in motion.

Deep blacks, earthy browns, and muted purples form the core structure. Subtle highlights of white, grey, and a touch of greenish-yellow offer contrast without overpowering the dark tones. The background is a soft, slightly textured white-beige, creating negative space that lets the central form breathe.

The brushwork varies, with some areas roughly textured and dry-brushed, and others smooth and solid. This contrast in technique gives the piece visual rhythm and a sense of movement, even though the composition is largely still.

The mood of the painting is introspective, solemn, and grounded. It feels like a study in form and presence, hinting at emotional or symbolic weight beneath the abstraction.

This oil on board is presented in an elegantly understated frame with a weathered silver finish and a linen lined border, reflecting its mid century feel. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some light scuffing but this is commensurate with age.

    Sunset Mosaic Coastline

    Sold

    SOLD

A vibrant and playful mid-century coastal landscape capturing the sun as it dips toward the horizon, painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

This expressive work presents a joyful, almost rhythmic interpretation of a seaside scene. Two stylised birch-like trees frame the composition, their graphic black outlines and emerald foliage creating a lively archway that guides the viewer’s gaze toward the glowing red sun and shimmering water beyond. The shoreline curves gently into view, rendered in warm sandy yellows and soft greens that lend the scene a welcoming, idyllic quality.

Containing elements of fauvism and expressionism, this striking painting is characterised by its rich colours and playful repetition of marks and a mosaic-like scattering of forms across the sky and sea. The artist has used bold, looping linework and patchwork colour fields to create a sense of movement – waves ripple in textured dashes of white, coral, and blue, while the sky hums with pink and powder-blue strokes interspersed with touches of gold.

St Ives Head I (Very Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK delivery only.

A very large and atmospheric abstract landscape painting, executed in oil onto board by contemporary British artist Ian Mood.

This abstract oil painting of St Ives Head conveys a powerful impression of the Cornish landscape through bold colour blocks and expressive brushwork. The composition is dominated by a strong horizontal division:

The lower portion features lush, vibrant greens, suggestive of the headland’s grassy terrain. These greens are layered and varied, with hints of dark shadows and occasional streaks of red and orange adding depth and movement. A sweeping form of deep black and charcoal arcs through the upper and middle sections, perhaps alluding to the rocky outcrop of St Ives Head or the moody Atlantic shadows. This shape anchors the piece and creates dramatic contrast. Surrounding these darker masses, icy blues and muted whites evoke the sky and sea, with the brushwork ranging from smooth to vigorously textured. Pops of pink and red in fine linear marks add visual interest and energetic tension across the central area.

The painting is both abstract and landscape-inspired, distilling the raw essence of the coastal headland into expressive colour fields and gestural marks. It reflects the elemental forces of land, sea, and weather typical of St Ives, rendered in a deeply personal, modernist style.

This very large oil on board is housed in a complementary light grey frame.  Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

Fields of Stillness (Set of 2)

    Sold

    SOLD

An elegant pair of mid-century landscapes that capture the quiet poetry of rural life through a minimalist modernist lens, and executed in oil onto canvas.

Both works feature sweeping compositions that draw the viewer into open countryside scenes  – one depicting a farmhouse on a distant ridge under a wide, tranquil sky, and the other showing a meandering country road curving gently toward thatched cottages.

The artist’s style is distinctly modernist, characterised by bold, simplified forms and strong, rhythmic geometry within the land contours. The palette is a refined harmony of sage greens, browns, and teal-blue skies – colours that evoke both calm and structure. Thick, expressive brushstrokes convey texture and light with confident economy, allowing the paint itself to suggest the terrain’s movement and atmosphere.

Together, the pair exudes balance and quiet strength – timeless mid-century pieces that celebrate the stillness and spaciousness of the rural landscape while offering a refined decorative harmony.

These oil on canvases are presented in beautifully complementary mid-century style frames that enhance their serene, modernist quality. One in a soft silvered wood finish, and the other in a champagne-gold undertone finish. Both the paintings and frames are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Forest Geometry

    Forest Geometry

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist landscape that reimagines a wooded scene through the lens of abstraction and cubism, painted in oil onto canvas.

The painting depicts a stand of slender trees rising before a distant hillside, their forms fractured into geometric planes and rhythmic verticals. At the composition’s heart, a dark evergreen anchors the scene – its deep green tones contrasting against the softer mosaic of browns, blues, and muted mauves that fill the surrounding terrain.

Through overlapping geometric forms and layered brushstrokes, the artist has constructed the landscape as an interplay of colour and shape rather than a literal depiction of nature. Earthy greens, browns, and yellows are interwoven with muted mauves, cool blues, and touches of rose and teal, creating a sense of quiet motion and depth.

The brushwork is assertive, with visible texture lending a tactile quality to the surface. Planes of colour shift and intersect, capturing the essence of light filtering through trees while also flattening and reordering space — a hallmark of Cubist experimentation.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has scuffs and some areas of paint loss.

  • Golden Tree

    Golden Tree

    Sold

    SOLD

A soothing and very pleasant modernist landscape, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1976.

A single tree, glowing in golden orange, stands proudly in the foreground against a backdrop of whitewashed houses with deep blue roofs and soft foliage. The simplified geometry of the composition lends the scene a calm structure, while the thick impasto and visible brushstrokes add energy and texture to the surface.

The artist has used a restrained palette of earthy greens, warm yellows, and muted greys that evokes a sense of stillness, balancing abstraction with familiarity. The forms are distilled to their essence – the foliage reduced to layered shapes, the tree rendered as a luminous form pulsing with autumnal warmth.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary white wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs. Please note there is some glare in the photographs.

  • Harbour & Hillside

    Harbour & Hillside

    Sold

    SOLD

A serene mid-century coastal landscape that captures the rhythmic order of a harbour scene rendered through a distinctly modernist lens, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

Clusters of geometric buildings and cranes line the waterfront, their angular forms carefully arranged to evoke both structure and serenity. The distant hills rise gently across the water, balancing the composition with soft undulating lines against the rigid shapes of the port.

The artist has used a palette of muted yet harmonious tones – brick red, sage green, browns, blush, and blue – creating a subdued but richly layered harmony of colour. Each hue appears thoughtfully modulated, suggesting light glancing off the industrial surfaces and calm waters below.

The brushwork is confident and deliberate, with flat, interlocking planes that give the painting an almost architectural rhythm. Despite the simplified forms, there is a deep sense of atmosphere and quietude, as though the bustling port has been momentarily stilled in contemplation.

This oil on canvas is beautifully presented in a linen-lined wooden frame. The painting itself is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some marks as well as some age spots to the linen section, consistent with age.

  • Letters from the Past

    Letters from the Past

    Sold

    SOLD

A  poignant mid-century landscape capturing a solitary figure walking beneath a windswept tree, executed in oil onto canvas.

The scene is stripped to its essentials: a single bare-limbed tree with sparse autumn leaves and a small red letterbox attached to its trunk, standing against a pale blue sky. Below, an elderly man dressed in a dark green overcoat and cap leans gently on his cane as he walks along a quiet path, evoking a tender sense of solitude and reflection.

Rendered in a restrained, minimalist style, the artist has employed loose, confident brushstrokes and a limited, harmonious palette of muted blues and earthy browns. The tree’s branches, painted with gestural strokes, convey the movement of a cold breeze, while the man’s stillness contrasts with the rest of the composition’s subtle motion.

There’s a poetic simplicity to the piece – both melancholic and peaceful.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim wood frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Modernist Forest

    Sold

    SOLD

A very pleasant modernist landscape oil composition dated 1977, and painted by the established Swedish artist Ture Fabiansson (1910-1994), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, The Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and many others.

The composition presents a forest landscape setting, with simplified trees, rolling hills, and a pathway that weaves through the background. The focal point is a striking orange tree that contrasts against the muted greens, browns, and earth tones of the surrounding foliage.

Modernist in its ethos, the artist has skilfully simplified the composition into bold, flat colour planes and geometric shapes, and there is a focus on form, shape, and colour rather than precise detail.

The brushwork is loose yet controlled, suggesting a painterly technique with visible strokes adding light texture.

This oil on canvas is housed in complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing.
