• Pair of Staffordshire Dogs (Red)

    Pair of Staffordshire Dogs (Red)

    Sold

    SOLD

A very charming pair of paintings depicting the iconic Staffordshire spaniel dogs, long celebrated in British folk art and ceramics, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The two dogs are painted in a deliberately naïve, decorative style that recalls the 19th-century porcelain mantelpiece figures they are inspired by.

Each dog sits upright against a muted pinkish-red background, with a simple brown ground anchoring them in place. Their white coats are adorned with large chestnut-brown patches—rendered in stylised, almost floral shapes—that add rhythm and balance to the composition. Both dogs wear gilt collars with chain details, a hallmark of traditional Staffordshire imagery. Their soulful yellow eyes, drooping ears, and small red mouths give them an expressive, slightly whimsical quality, striking a balance between charm and solemnity.

Presented as a pair, the paintings echo one another but are not identical—one dog faces left, the other right—making them natural companions, just as Staffordshire figurines were traditionally displayed in pairs.

The appeal lies in their folk-art simplicity and decorative strength: bold flat shapes, warm earthy tones, and a sense of nostalgia that makes them feel timeless yet playful. They would add both character and heritage charm to any wall, bridging the line between painting and folk tradition.

Each of these oils on board are housed in chestnut brown painted wood frames with subtle gilt detailing. Both paintings are in excellent condition. The frames have some very minor scuffs but this is in keeping with their vintage style.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.

    Quiet Repose

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed and emotive mid-century modernist figurative composition that presents a reclining nude figure resting upon a rich dark-toned fabric, painted in oil onto board and dated 1954.

The composition embraces a raw, expressive approach, with the subject’s form rendered in muted tones of peach and sand, contrasting against the deep charcoal-grey and blue backdrop.

The brushstrokes are gestural yet controlled, with visible layering that gives the painting a raw, evocative quality. The background is treated with an abstract approach, allowing texture and movement to emerge through deliberate, almost impressionistic strokes. The subdued yet contrasting palette—featuring deep red and navy tones beneath the figure—creates a sense of depth and warmth.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner gilt window that pairs wonderfully with the painting. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Sea Flowers

    Sea Flowers

    Sold

    SOLD

A playful and organic one-off original monoprint presented in a sapele frame, by British artist Olivia Bouzyk.

Unlike most printmaking, where artists create an edition of identical prints, a monoprint produces just one final piece. Olivia works on a plate — inking, painting, and layering textures — and then transfers the image onto paper. But because of the process, it can never be repeated in the same way again.

This artwork is created from two layers of ink on purple card. There is a slight texture to the dark blue, as some of the purple background can be seen underneath. The yellow flowers are slightly translucent but with thicker, textured ink. The flowers are made from a paper stencil which was of a drawing from the Essex coastline.

Each work holds the spontaneity of the moment it was made — the way the ink spread, the pressure of the press, the marks left behind. No two are ever alike. When you own one of Olivia’s prints, you’re holding the only version that exists.

Olivia works with contrasts in line, colour and form and a sense of harmony is achieved by balancing this series of juxtapositions.

This artwork, as with the others, has no intended direction, so it can be hung to suit the viewer’s space/inclinations. The fixtures on the back of all the prints are on each side so that they can be hung in any direction, and the signature also has no intended direction.

It is mounted and housed in a high quality sapele wood frame with anti reflective UV glass. Both frame and artwork are in excellent condition.

    Size:  61.5 x 86 cm (including frame)

  • Stairwell Passage

    Stairwell Passage

    Sold

    SOLD

An abstract mid-century painting that presents a loosely structured cityscape, likely depicting an alleyway or stairwell framed by urban architecture, executed in oil onto canvas.

The subject matter is suggested rather than precisely defined, with forms of stairs, walls, and a slender lamppost-like shape emerging through layered brushstrokes. The scene gives an impression of movement and transience, as if glimpsed quickly while passing through.

Executed in an abstract expressionist manner, the work balances between representation and abstraction. While there are hints of architectural elements, the focus is on atmosphere and painterly effect rather than literal detail. The composition is dynamic, with angled lines creating depth and perspective that draw the eye inward.

The brushwork is energetic and varied – broad, gestural sweeps contrast with more angular, deliberate marks to suggest structure. The layering of muted shades create texture and depth, with areas of raw canvas and loosely applied paint adding to the painting’s immediacy. The strokes appear spontaneous yet controlled, giving the composition a sense of rhythm and vitality.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary floater gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and the frame has some paint marks at its left edge.

  • Sunlit Room

    Sunlit Room

    Sold

    SOLD

A mid-century modernist painting of an interior scene that captures the quiet intimacy of a domestic space rendered through a restrained yet expressive lens, painted in oil onto board and dated 1950.

The composition depicts a corner of a modest room: a simple wooden chair rests to the left, a sideboard with a neatly draped cloth anchors the centre, and an open doorway offers a glimpse into another space beyond, where muted vertical lines hint at hanging garments.

Executed in a loose, painterly style, the work favours suggestion over precision, with forms distilled into geometric blocks and softened edges. The palette blends warm orange and browns, cool greys, creamy whites, and muted greens, with accents of blue and lavender lending gentle vibrancy. Broad, confident brushstrokes layer opaque passages of paint, while areas of visible underpainting and texture evoke both the tactile quality of the interior and the hand of the artist.

The scene carries a sense of quiet stillness, yet the artist’s modernist sensibilities imbue it with a dynamic interplay between colour, shape, and light, making it as much a study in spatial harmony as a record of a lived-in space.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition and the frame has minor marks.

    Sunlit Windowsill

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming still life that captures a serene arrangement of potted plants basking in the glow of daylight streaming through a tall-paned window, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1978.

The composition presents an interior moment – a collection of leafy greens in various ceramic and clay pots, their silhouettes softened and fractured by the interplay of light and shadow. The foliage, rendered in loose yet deliberate strokes, reaches upward in arcs, suggesting gentle movement and vitality.

The style blends modernist simplicity with a painterly impressionism, focusing on atmosphere rather than strict realism. The palette is dominated by cool blues and soft greens, balanced by muted orange, creams, and warm golden tones filtering through the window.

Brushwork is confident and expressive, with layered, semi-transparent applications of paint that create a sense of depth and shifting light. The textured surface and visible strokes lend the work an immediacy, as though the scene was painted in one sitting to capture a fleeting afternoon mood.

  • Terracotta Coastline

    Terracotta Coastline

    Sold

    SOLD.

A captivating modernist abstract painting that evokes a coastal village set against a distant sea and seen from an elevated viewpoint, executed in oil onto board.

The composition is built on a series of bold, gestural blocks of colour – burnt orange, yellow verdant green – suggesting terracotta roofs, foliage, and sunlit structures nestled in the hillside.

The artist has used a distinctly expressive style, using thick, confident brushstrokes that emphasise texture and movement. The top half of the canvas opens into a serene, pale sky and a smooth, luminous band of blue sea, rendered in calm horizontal strokes that contrast with the dynamic geometry below.

Hints of architectural forms and natural growth are abstracted into vivid planes and swaths of colour, capturing the atmosphere, structure, and vibrancy of a Mediterranean coastal scene. With its interplay of abstraction and suggestion, this work invites the viewer to linger and imagine.

  • The Queue

    The Queue

    Sold

    SOLD

A whimsical and bustling mid-century painting depicting a scene with a winding line of people, each captured in distinctive attire and posture, painted in oil onto board.

Capturing a lively cross-section of society as they wait in a winding queue, the figures are depicted in a delightful variety of attire from formal suits and military uniforms to bright dresses and patterned coats, as they snake across the snowy ground in an elegant S-curve and their colourful garments enlivening the cool, pale backdrop.

Executed in a naïve, narrative style, the work offers a playful yet observant glimpse into human behaviour and community life. The artist’s use of short, textured brushstrokes imparts an engaging sense of movement, while small dabs of colour suggest faces, gestures, and clothing details with economical charm. The light, neutral background allows the vibrant reds, yellows, blues, and greens of the crowd to sing, creating a joyful rhythm across the surface.

A particularly striking feature of this work is the way the composition subtly and playfully extends beyond the picture plane – figures at the lower right spill over into the surrounding rustic wooden frame. This unusual style blurs the boundary between artwork and frame, drawing the viewer further into the scene and giving the impression that the lively procession continues beyond the canvas itself.

This oil on board is housed in a wide-profiled distressed wooden frame which complements the painting’s vintage charm. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Striped Cloth

    The Striped Cloth

An vibrant mid-century interior still life painting,  executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition presents a warmly lit domestic scene, featuring a hanging terracotta planter with cascading green foliage, a deep green bowl, and a striped textile draped casually across a tabletop. The backdrop is a moody, textured wash of blue, suggesting a window or a darkened interior wall, offering contrast to the brighter foreground.

Executed in a modernist style, the composition emphasises flat planes of colour and simplified forms. The palette is rich but controlled – yellow, navy blue, forest green, and earthy reds dominate the scene. The artist has used broad, confident brushstrokes and has left traces of underpainting and canvas texture visible, giving the work a spontaneous, tactile quality. The interplay between geometric shapes and organic curves imbues this still life with both structure and intimacy.

  • The White Vase

    The White Vase

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid-century still life painting that presents a bold, modernist interpretation of a tabletop arrangement, executed in oil onto board and dated 1963 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A tall, cylindrical white vase punctuates the centre of the composition, its simplified form rendered with thick impasto and heavy, deliberate brushstrokes. From the vase emerges a small bouquet of abstracted flowers in deep green, with accents of golden yellow and a striking touch of cobalt blue, all set against a muted grey-white background.

The composition is built around angular planes and geometric contrasts, with blocks of black, orange, and white forming the suggestion of a table surface, napkin, or cloth beneath the vase. The artist has stripped the subject down to its essential shapes, emphasising structure and rhythm rather than naturalistic detail.

The palette is restrained yet impactful, dominated by whites, greys, and blacks, punctuated by the warm mustard yellows and cool flashes of blue. The brushwork is textured and confident, with layered strokes that create depth and a tactile surface quality.

    Sold

    SOLD

A large mid-century modernist landscape painting that captures a serene coastal scene where a quiet road runs parallel to a shoreline, executed in oil onto board.

The composition divides naturally into two sections: the vibrant blue of the sea on the left and the muted green of the grassy roadside on the right. In the foreground, a dry and sparse landscape is present, and a few scattered wooden planks rest on the ground. The composition presents four elongated, abstracted human figures, rendered with a bold economy of form. The figures stand in two pairs, separated by a vertical division, suggesting the architectural framing of a corridor, doorway, or transitional space. Faces are minimally defined, with the emphasis placed instead on geometric blocks of colour to articulate torsos, limbs, and garments.

Broad, confident brushstrokes, laden with texture, create a tactile surface where each mark remains visible, emphasising the physical act of painting. The layering of paint and interplay between light and dark areas add depth and contrast, while the simplification of form gives the work a timeless, almost archetypal presence.

  • Industrial Abstraction

    Industrial Abstraction

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly composed mid century abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1957.

This painting is an abstract composition with a cubist influence, constructed from overlapping geometric shapes in a horizontal layout.

The artist has used a palette of muted earth tones—including shades of blue, olive green, mustard yellow, grey, brown, and black—with occasional pops of more vibrant hues like cobalt blue and ochre.

The forms resemble architectural or industrial elements—possibly buildings, machinery, or a cityscape—but remain non-representational. Thick, impasto brushstrokes give the surface a textured, tactile quality. The shapes interlock and layer, creating depth and rhythm across the canvas. Angled lines and blocks suggest both movement and structure, while negative space in pale grey balances the denser elements.

The rigid composition and strong use of form create a sense of architectural solidity, while still maintaining an expressive feel through painterly texture. The balance of order and spontaneity suggests an interest in form, design, and underlying harmony.

The painting is housed in a frame with a linen lined border. There is a small area of paint loss as shown in close up but the paint layer is stable overall. The painting and frame in good condition overall.

  • Symphony of Trees

    Symphony of Trees

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking and brilliantly executed modernist style landscape composition that presents a stylised woodland scene reimagined through bold abstraction, painted in oil onto board and dated 1959.

Tall, vertical shapes suggest stands of trees rising in rhythmic formations, their trunks and canopies broken into geometric planes of green, and pale yellow. Rounded forms in burnt orange and deep red punctuate the foreground, evoking foliage or sculptural boulders, while angular planes of mauve, lilac, and blue sweep across the ground to create shifting patches of shadow and light. In the distance, softened silhouettes of hills and sky fade into pale blues and lavender tones, balancing the composition with calm horizontality.

Painted in a distinctly modernist manner, the artist has used flat, faceted brushstrokes and strong colour blocking to reduce the natural landscape into a dynamic interplay of shape, hue, and texture. The surface is rich with visible, deliberate brushwork, where each stroke contributes to the overall rhythm of the piece.

This is a quintessential example of mid-century landscape abstraction, where the familiar forms of nature are transformed into a harmonious geometric composition that feels both structured and lyrical.

This abstract composition evokes a coastal or industrial landscape through a series of bold geometric forms and a restrained, earthen palette. The composition is anchored by a solid horizontal band of deep olive and brown, suggesting a distant shoreline or structure, while above it, angular bursts of cobalt blue, lemon yellow, and white hint at rooftops or sails catching the light. The lower half is dominated by cool, muted greens and greys, with subtle layering and visible palette knife marks that add a tactile quality.

The painting features a mix of smooth and textured brushstrokes, with areas of impasto lending weight and structure. The deliberate abstraction flattens perspective, creating a sense of quiet tension between land, form, and space.

This oil on canvas is presented in a beautifully suited gilt frame with an inner linen border and gilt window. There is some craquelure present mainly on the top section of the painting, but the paint layer is stable overall and this does not detract from the overall composition. The frame is in very good vintage condition.

    Size: 61 x 70 cm (including frame)

  • Topography in Red

    SOLD

A striking mid-century abstract composition painted in oil onto canvas, by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

In this composition, we can discern that the artist has abstracted a landscape into a dynamic interplay of geometry, texture, and tone. Horizontal planes in earthy reds, browns, and beige suggest a stylised terrain – possibly evoking farmland or desert formations – interrupted by sharp, angular forms that hint at distant structures or dwellings.

The composition is boldly architectural, grounded in the principles of mid-century modernist abstraction. The artist has applied oil paint in dense, tactile layers, with expressive impasto and areas of scraped-back texture. Pops of cobalt blue, yellow, and a crisp white triangle create points of visual tension and balance, lifting the palette from its otherwise grounded tonality.

A striking example of mid-century abstraction, the painting balances structure with expressive vitality, offering a modernist meditation on land, form, and space.

This oil on canvas is presented in a beautifully suited gilt frame with an inner linen border and gilt window. There is some craquelure present as shown in the close ups, but the paint layer is stable overall and this does not detract from the overall composition. The frame is in very good vintage condition.

    Twilight Over Bay

    Sold

    SOLD

An expressive mid-century modernist painting that captures a tranquil coastal landscape bathed in the cool hush of evening light, executed in oil onto board and dated 1958.

A rugged shoreline dominates the foreground, its cliffs rendered in deep charcoal, mauve, and sienna tones, leading the eye toward a serene inlet that reflects the muted sky above.

The brushwork is confident – swift, expressive strokes shape the rocky terrain, while smoother, more fluid strokes define the still water and clouded sky. The pale turquoise sea contrasts gently against the darker crags, suggesting the last light of day catching on the water’s surface.

The sky is softened by horizontal swathes of greys, pinks, and purples, evoking a moment just before dusk settles.

This oil on board is housed in a beautiful wood frame.  Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    SOLD

A charming and lively winter street scene  composition animated by everyday life,  painted in a Naïve, expressive style, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1975.

A lively cross-section of the town unfolds beneath a snowy sky, with bundled-up pedestrians and children, bustling traffic, and colourful facades of buildings. At the forefront, a group of figures walks across a snow-covered road, while a café scene to the left offers a warm interior contrast, its aqua-blue curtains framing diners mid-conversation.

Rendered in a naïve style, the work is rich in storytelling detail and communal warmth. The brushstrokes are expressive and confident, with thick applications of paint lending a textured, tactile quality to the icy streets and clothing folds. The palette is joyful and vivid – icy blues, moss greens, reds, and apricot tones come together to enliven the cold winter setting, while bold outlines and rhythmic patterns give the composition a whimsical structure.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very minor scuffs.

    SOLD

A very large and brilliantly executed mid century modernist figurative composition in oil, painted onto canvas by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition captures the tender and affections connection between two people. Seated closely side by side, the two abstracted figures are depicted in a bold, minimalist, and colourful style. The focus is on shape, colour, and form rather than intricate details.

The palette consists of soft pastels, including shades of creams and yellows, with vibrant accents of blue, green, and red dispersed across the canvas. Upon close inspection of the painting, one can notice how the artist has skilfully layered contrasting swathes of colours to reveal a light texture and interest to this heart-warming painting.

Overall, the artist’s use of abstracted, geometric shapes, fragmented lines, and bold brushstrokes creates a dynamic yet harmonious composition.

This oil on canvas is accentuated by a dark wood frame with an outer and inner gold border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing.
