A large and striking mid century abstract modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

In this composition, a series of geometric shapes in red, orange, yellow and white are set against a black background. This juxtaposition of the bright colours  against the black immediately captures our attention, encouraging us to analyse the shapes that have been cleverly applied to the canvas. A recognisable figurative shape appears, seemingly a parent cradling a baby. Although the shapes are distinctly large flat planes, within each of the planes there is visible texture. We see evidence of the artist’s palette knife, moving the oil paint around the surface and leaving areas of impasto.

There is very interesting contrast between focus on formal elements (shape, colour and line) and the tender subject which the artist has chosen to capture.

This large and masterful modernist oil with its clever composition and its rich and vivid palette would certainly make for a statement piece in any interior.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary black frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffing but it suits the general style of the piece.

  • Houses by the Rolling Hills

    Houses by the Rolling Hills

    Sold

    SOLD

A charming and picturesque mid-century landscape that captures a quiet cluster of houses nestled within rolling green fields, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

The composition centres around a small hamlet, its simple geometric forms distilled into blocks of colour: red and blue rooftops, creamy white façades, and deep green foliage. A single tree rises from the village centre, its broad, dark crown creating a natural focal point amid the surrounding patchwork of shapes.

Rendered in a distinctly modernist style, the painting embraces simplification and abstraction, reducing the landscape into harmonious, interlocking planes. The artist’s palette is earthy yet vivid: rich brick reds, moss greens, browns, and blues – all balanced by softer, muted tones in the distant hills. This juxtaposition of saturated and subdued colour adds depth and a rhythmic visual cadence.

Brushstrokes are confident and textural, with layered applications of paint that create subtle variations across the surface. Edges are softly defined, allowing forms to merge slightly into one another, giving the work its characteristic mid-century warmth and painterly charm. The result is a beautifully composed village scene that feels at once grounded and gently abstracted.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Room with Blue Window

    Room with Blue Window

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating mid-century interior composition that draws the viewer into a sunlit room where everyday objects take on a contemplative stillness, executed in oil onto board by Swedish artist Tore Nyberg (1911-1993), whose has been represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, and the Värmland Museum in Karlstad, to name a few.

Two simple wooden chairs sit at ease, one angled toward the window, the other slightly withdrawn, suggesting the subtle presence of human life just beyond the frame. Through the central window, a softened exterior unfolds: pale facades and rooftops rendered in light tones.

Executed in a distinctly modernist style, the painting balances structure and looseness with remarkable sensitivity. The composition is anchored by strong verticals ( the doorframe, window panes, and chair backs)  yet softened by expressive, painterly handling. There is a quiet geometry at play, but it never feels rigid. Instead, it breathes with a lived-in warmth.

The colour palette is both fresh and harmonious, dominated by cool blues and turquoise tones that frame the window and radiate throughout the room. These are beautifully offset by warm browns, and dusty greens, creating a gentle dialogue between interior warmth and exterior light. Subtle shifts in tone , particularly in the walls and floor, add depth without overwhelming the scene.

Brushstrokes are confident and visible, applied with a relaxed, almost intuitive hand. Edges are loosely defined, allowing forms to blur slightly into one another, enhancing the sense of atmosphere. The paint surface carries a tactile quality, with layered strokes that catch the light and give the composition a quiet vibrancy.

Overall, this is a deeply atmospheric work: an intimate study of space, light, and stillness, where beauty is found in the ordinary.

This oil on board is presented in a beautifully characterful, rustic wooden frame that complements the warmth and intimacy of the interior scene. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some areas of paint loss but this reveals the wood underneath and adds to its vintage charm.

  • Intersecting Planes

    Intersecting Planes

    Sold

    SOLD

A large and very striking mid-century geometric abstract composition, painted in oil in 1955  by the established Swedish artist Bror Ingemar Fröberg (1921-1999), whose artworks have been represented in the Moderna Museum in Stockholm and the Sörmland Museum.

The painting is built from a dynamic network of interlocking shapes and angled planes. Triangles, diamonds, and irregular quadrilaterals converge and diverge across the canvas, creating a sense of movement that feels architectural. Though non-representational, the arrangement evokes rhythm, structure, and balance.

Executed in a geometric abstract style, the work relies on strong linear boundaries and clearly defined colour fields. The composition feels meticulously plotted, yet there is a softness to some of the edges that lends a human, hand-painted warmth. The overlapping forms create layers of depth and subtle spatial tension, typical of mid-century abstraction.

The colour palette is earthy and muted, and these grounded tones harmonise beautifully together. The balance of darker masses against lighter areas adds contrast and energy.

The brushwork is confident and deliberate, with solid blocks of colour applied in smooth, even strokes. Slight variations in texture and faint visible brush trails keep the surface engaging

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. The painting has some light surface marks but overall, the surface still presents well, and these characteristics do not detract from the artwork’s visual impact.

  • The Shifting Sky

    The Shifting Sky

    Sold

    SOLD

A large and striking mid-century modernist abstract landscape composed in rich, geometric swathes of colour, executed in oil onto canvas.

This lively painting has abstracted a landscape scene into bold, horizontal blocks that suggest cultivated fields and farmhouses nestled among trees. The land is rendered in earthy greens, dusty pinks and mauves, transitioning toward cooler blues and lavenders in the sky.

The brushstrokes are broad, confident, and thickly applied. The sky dominates the upper half with layered streaks of cloud in muted purples, creams, and blues, evoking a moody, almost cinematic atmosphere. The artist’s minimalist approach to detail creates a sense of depth and serenity, inviting the viewer to contemplate the rhythm and quiet beauty of the countryside.

This oil on board is housed in a very well-suited ridged frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some surface wear to inner silver border (as shown), as well as a small loss to its upper left corner (as shown).

  • Fields at First Light

    Fields at First Light

    Sold

    SOLD

A tranquil mid-century landscape that presents a serene, panoramic view of open countryside unfolding beneath a pale sky, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1959, measuring a metre in length.

Broad fields stretch gently into the distance, punctuated by a softly clustered stand of trees at the centre and a darker wooded horizon beyond. The composition’s horizontal emphasis enhances the sense of calm and quiet continuity, drawing the eye slowly across the land rather than toward a single focal point.

Painted in a restrained mid-century modern style, the work favours atmosphere and balance over fine detail. The colour palette is subtle and harmonious: warm buttery yellows and soft ochres in the fields are offset by muted sage and olive greens, with blush and dusty rose tones delicately shaping the trees. Above, a pale, airy sky in washed blues and off-whites lends lightness and openness to the scene.

Brushstrokes are loose and confident, applied in flattened planes with visible texture that gives the surface a gentle rhythm. The handling feels intuitive and expressive, allowing colours to softly merge at their edges while still maintaining a clear sense of structure. Overall, the painting captures a quiet, contemplative moment in nature.

This long oil on canvas is housed in an elegant linen lined frame with an inner and outer gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Coastal Passage

    Sold

    SOLD

A large mid-century abstract landscape painting that captures a tranquil coastal scene framed by lush greenery and golden landscapes, executed in oil onto canvas.

A narrow inlet leads the eye toward the deep blue waters of the sea, while sandy, golden-hued landforms in the foreground create a sense of depth and movement. The sky is rendered in soft muted greys and blues, suggesting an overcast or serene atmosphere.

Executed in a modernist style, the painting features bold, simplified forms with an emphasis on geometric shapes and harmonious composition. The colour palette consists of earthy greens, warm yellows, and calming blues, all applied with expressive and fluid yet controlled brushstrokes. Some areas show broad, sweeping strokes, while others feature more deliberate, textured applications of paint, giving the work a dynamic yet balanced feel.

The artist’s approach conveys a sense of both structure and spontaneity, reminiscent of mid-century landscape abstraction.

This oil on canvas is housed in a well-suited wide profile wood frame with an inner gilt border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame’s gilt border has some wear as shown.

  • Quiet Readers

    Quiet Readers

    Sold

    SOLD

A serene and beautifully distilled mid-century modernist figurative painting, executed in oil onto board by the established Swedish artist Ingvar Elén (1915–1973), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the National Museum in Sweden, and the Sörmlands Museum.

This composition features three seated figures, their forms reduced to soft geometric shapes and gentle interlocking silhouettes. Arranged in a subtle diagonal rhythm, the trio appears absorbed in quiet, individual focus: one reading, the others seated nearby – capturing a moment of shared stillness without explicit interaction.

The artist has relied on flattened planes of colour and carefully balanced tones to define each figure: warm peach, deep teal, olive green, charcoal grey, ochre, and soft clay-like browns. The palette is harmonious and understated, allowing the shapes and spatial arrangement to take centre stage. Their shadows and clothing become abstract colour blocks, lending the work a sculptural, almost collage-like quality.

Brushwork is smooth, matte, and subtly textured, with edges that are softened rather than sharply drawn. This creates a calm, meditative surface where each figure is distinct yet integrated into the overall rhythm of the composition.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in good vintage condition overall: there is some craquelure visible on the central figure’s arm, however, the paint layer remains stable, and this does not detract from the overall presentation of the work.

    Riverside Boulevard (Very large)

    Sold

    SOLD

A vibrant and lively cityscape bursting with movement and colour, dated 1974 and painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The scene centres around a pair of ornate towers rising from a bustling square, their facades animated with bright decorative motifs. Surrounding them, saturated-toned buildings with warm red roofs line the horizon, while to the right a gentle river curves through the city, complete with moored boats and strolling figures. Cars, pedestrians and flowing pathways fill the foreground, giving the scene an energetic, almost theatrical rhythm.

Rendered in a highly expressive and fauvist style, the work embraces bold contour lines and playful distortion to convey atmosphere rather than strict realism. The palette is vibrant and uplifting: lemon yellow, turquoise, sky blue, coral, and soft reds creating a sun-drenched glow across the composition. Brushstrokes are loose, gestural and almost calligraphic, with dashes, swirls and rhythmic marks animating every surface. The result is a joyful, kinetic interpretation of urban life, full of colour and charm.

    The Distance Between Us

    Sold

    SOLD

A contemplative modernist figurative painting that depicts a solitary figure standing before a vast expanse of open land, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1975.

The composition is strikingly divided into two registers: the upper portion capturing a serene vista of green fields and a distant tree line beneath a pale, open sky, and the lower section marked by a bold geometric band in black with red and orange vertical stripes.

Rendered in restrained tones of green and earthy brown, the work balances natural quietude with structural rhythm. The figure, outlined with simplicity and minimal detail and lightly sketched features, appears introspective, heightening the emotional resonance of the scene.

    Sold

    SOLD

A contemplative modernist figurative painting that depicts a seated woman before a softly rendered natural backdrop, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1975.

Her dark bob frames her lightly sketched expression, lending the composition an air of introspection and quiet distance. The figure’s mauve-pink blouse, trimmed with ruffled lace, contrasts subtly with the muted greens and browns of the forested landscape behind her.

The artist has used a delicate balance between precision and restraint: the background is softly diffused with translucent washes, while the figure’s form is more sharply delineated. The lower section of the painting introduces a striking geometric interruption: a striped band in cream, burgundy, and brown – that recalls textile or interior motifs, grounding the work in a unique aesthetic.

Brushstrokes are measured and matte, with thinly applied layers that allow the canvas texture to breathe through. The palette is subdued yet harmonious, evoking a faded photograph or memory : an image caught between presence and absence, realism and abstraction.

St Ives Head I (Very Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK delivery only.

A very large and atmospheric abstract landscape painting, executed in oil onto board by contemporary British artist Ian Mood.

This abstract oil painting of St Ives Head conveys a powerful impression of the Cornish landscape through bold colour blocks and expressive brushwork. The composition is dominated by a strong horizontal division:

The lower portion features lush, vibrant greens, suggestive of the headland’s grassy terrain. These greens are layered and varied, with hints of dark shadows and occasional streaks of red and orange adding depth and movement. A sweeping form of deep black and charcoal arcs through the upper and middle sections, perhaps alluding to the rocky outcrop of St Ives Head or the moody Atlantic shadows. This shape anchors the piece and creates dramatic contrast. Surrounding these darker masses, icy blues and muted whites evoke the sky and sea, with the brushwork ranging from smooth to vigorously textured. Pops of pink and red in fine linear marks add visual interest and energetic tension across the central area.

The painting is both abstract and landscape-inspired, distilling the raw essence of the coastal headland into expressive colour fields and gestural marks. It reflects the elemental forces of land, sea, and weather typical of St Ives, rendered in a deeply personal, modernist style.

This very large oil on board is housed in a complementary light grey frame.  Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Cubist Figure & Fruits (Large)

    Cubist Figure & Fruits (Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

A very large and brilliantly executed mid-century cubist painting that presents a fragmented figure seated beside a simple pedestal table holding a cluster of rounded fruit forms, painted in oil onto board.

In this striking composition, the human form is reduced to angular planes and intersecting facets, the face and body articulated through a network of geometric shapes in pale cream, brown, and muted green tones, accented by deep blacks. The table and fruit echo this cubist language, with rounded grapes and apples broken into overlapping, flat colour areas.

The style is distinctly cubist, emphasising structural simplification and the interplay of light and shadow through geometric abstraction. The artist balances areas of dense black with softer sage greens, creating a rhythmic tension across the composition. Brushstrokes are firm, deliberate, and textured, with the layered paint adding subtle depth to the otherwise flat geometry.

The restrained palette – creams, greens, blacks, and teal-blues – contributes to the painting’s harmony, while the angular construction of the figure and still life demonstrates the artist’s focus on form and design rather than naturalistic representation.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary heavy solid wood frame with an oak-toned finish. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A striking mid-century cityscape that captures the shimmering energy of an urban night scene, translated into a rich tapestry of colour and geometric abstraction, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition is structured with bold, interlocking blocks and angular shapes, suggesting the rhythm of buildings, windows, bridges, and reflections on water. A procession of glowing yellow-lit windows runs across the centre, evoking a row of houses or perhaps a train, cutting a luminous path through the darkness. Above, sharp angular rooftops and scaffolding-like forms rise into a deep indigo and violet sky, punctuated by hints of streetlamps and architectural details.

The artist’s palette is rich and vibrant, dominated by jewel tones of cobalt blue, violet, crimson, and emerald green, balanced with the warmth of orange, red, and brown. The glowing yellow windows add a brilliant contrast, animating the scene with a sense of movement and vitality.

The brushwork is expressive and textured, with bold, layered strokes that give depth and tactile richness to the surface. Each shape feels carefully constructed, yet retains the energy of the hand that painted it, merging structure with spontaneity.

This work is a celebration of the modern city at night – a mosaic of light, shadow, and human presence – rendered through the lens of mid-century abstraction.

This oil on board is presented in a beautiful wood frame that has a unique beaded detailing. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Shape of Thought (Very Large)

The Shape of Thought (Very Large)

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Delivery Only.

A large and outstanding mid century modernist abstract figurative composition in oil, painted onto board by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting presents a bold and dynamic interpretation of the human form, fragmented into intersecting shapes and saturated blocks of colour. At the centre, a green torso-like shape anchors the composition, surrounded by gestural planes of midnight blue, ivory white, forest green, sky grey, and cerulean. Hints of yellow and red punctuate the palette with energy, while the heavy use of impasto and palette knife work brings a sense of raw physicality to the surface.

Though abstract, the overlapping forms and contours evoke the impression of a seated or contemplative figure, abstracted almost to the point of pure form. The figure emerges from and dissolves into the background, suggesting emotional introspection or transformation. The painter’s brushwork is assertive yet nuanced, blending thickly applied oil with moments of scraped texture and layered opacity.

In both its materiality and expressive ambiguity, the painting speaks to the search for identity through abstraction, emotion, and gesture.

Close to a metre in height, this painting will make a statement piece in any interior.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very well-suited hessian lined frame with an inner silver border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffing.

  • Sea Flowers

    Sea Flowers

    Sold

    SOLD

A playful and organic one-off original monoprint presented in a sapele frame, by British artist Olivia Bouzyk.

Unlike most printmaking, where artists create an edition of identical prints, a monoprint produces just one final piece. Olivia works on a plate — inking, painting, and layering textures — and then transfers the image onto paper. But because of the process, it can never be repeated in the same way again.

This artwork is created from two layers of ink on purple card. There is a slight texture to the dark blue, as some of the purple background can be seen underneath. The yellow flowers are slightly translucent but with thicker, textured ink. The flowers are made from a paper stencil which was of a drawing from the Essex coastline.

Each work holds the spontaneity of the moment it was made — the way the ink spread, the pressure of the press, the marks left behind. No two are ever alike. When you own one of Olivia’s prints, you’re holding the only version that exists.

Olivia works with contrasts in line, colour and form and a sense of harmony is achieved by balancing this series of juxtapositions.

This artwork, as with the others, has no intended direction, so it can be hung to suit the viewer’s space/inclinations. The fixtures on the back of all the prints are on each side so that they can be hung in any direction, and the signature also has no intended direction.

It is mounted and housed in a high quality sapele wood frame with anti reflective UV glass. Both frame and artwork are in excellent condition.

    Size:  61.5 x 86 cm (including frame)

    SOLD

A very large and brilliantly executed mid century modernist figurative composition in oil, painted onto canvas by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition captures the tender and affections connection between two people. Seated closely side by side, the two abstracted figures are depicted in a bold, minimalist, and colourful style. The focus is on shape, colour, and form rather than intricate details.

The palette consists of soft pastels, including shades of creams and yellows, with vibrant accents of blue, green, and red dispersed across the canvas. Upon close inspection of the painting, one can notice how the artist has skilfully layered contrasting swathes of colours to reveal a light texture and interest to this heart-warming painting.
