    A small but powerful set of abstract compositions by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil onto linen panel. Each one signed, titled and dated on reverse.

    Central to these paintings are an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

    Lloyd Durling is a British artist working in London. His practice is painting-based and he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, U.S.A and Asia. In 2017 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Works are held in both public and private collections worldwide.

    An absolutely brilliant mid century nude study, painted in oil and dated 1944.

    In this composition a female figure sits on an intricate fabric, her gaze turned away from us. The minimalist palette of her body sits in contrast to the richly coloured fabric below her, creating a wonderful juxtaposition. The artist’s brushstrokes are long and expressive, giving this piece its painterly feel.

    Although we don’t know the story behind this painting, the inscription on the reverse which translates to ‘My first and greatest love’ hints at the figure’s significance to the artist and imbues the painting with so much more meaning.

    The painting is housed in a really lovely deep profile frame which suits it wonderfully. The painting has some light age marks and the frame has some scuffing, but neither of these detract from the attractiveness of the piece.

    An outstanding and atmospheric abstract coastal scape painting, executed in oil onto board by contemporary British artist Ian Mood.

    The vast expanse of a magnificent sky dominates the middle and background of the painting. Broad and expressive brushstrokes have been confidently executed in various shades of blue, white, and orange, creating a mesmerising dance of colours that captures the essence of the dynamic and ever-changing atmospheric conditions.     About the artist:

    Ian Mood is a contemporary artist with an international reputation, having shown work with Saatchi London, Brooklyn Art Library, Battersea Art Fair & Manchester Art Fair – as well as being represented by numerous established galleries in the UK and US. He recently held his first solo show in New York.

    In 2019, he collaborated as artist in residence with The National Theatre (Madness of George III with Mark Gatiss) and The Royal Exchange Manchester (Mother Courage with Julie Hesmondhalgh).

    Ian is a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Society Of Staffordshire Artists and the Artist Association of Nantucket (USA) where he regularly lectures as part of their summer arts programme. He was awarded the Artists Association of Nantucket Frank Swift Chase Plein Air Award in 2014.

    Ian grew up in Stoke on Trent and studied Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
