    ‘This ground I’ve walked, I’ve walked before. I know it’s oddities, it’s dangling limbs, It’s buried roots, it’s ancient trees. Oak, elder, pine, we are all friends. I breathe it’s forests, eyes closed, hands open. I soak in it’s seas and run down it’s hills. It’s rooted within me, a lived history within every new step. I know this ground, I’ve walked it before.’

    A large and striking mid century abstract modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

    In this composition, a series of geometric shapes in red, orange, yellow and white are set against a black background. This juxtaposition of the bright colours  against the black immediately captures our attention, encouraging us to analyse the shapes that have been cleverly applied to the canvas. A recognisable figurative shape appears, seemingly a parent cradling a baby. Although the shapes are distinctly large flat planes, within each of the planes there is visible texture. We see evidence of the artist’s palette knife, moving the oil paint around the surface and leaving areas of impasto.

    There is very interesting contrast between focus on formal elements (shape, colour and line) and the tender subject which the artist has chosen to capture.

    This large and masterful modernist oil with its clever composition and its rich and vivid palette would certainly make for a statement piece in any interior.

    The artist has taken a geometric approach this painting, using the forms of the white buildings outlined in black to build depth and perspective. A number of figures can be see in the forefront by a door, painted in striking blues and reds which stand out against the stark white structures. Juxtaposed against the sharped edged rectangular the buildings are curved green mounds that represent bushes or trees. They lend a softness to the painting and balance out the composition wonderfully. This scene is set against a lovely blue sky which gives the painting a feeling of calm and peacefulness.
