A large and serene mid-century modernist painting that captures a vast landscape rendered with bold, expressive brushwork and simplified forms, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1946.
At the centre of the composition, a red-roofed house sits nestled among rolling green hills, with winding white paths leading toward the horizon, where a band of deep blue suggests the presence of the sea.
The artist has abstracted natural elements into rhythmic, geometric shapes – trees, hills, and fences are distilled into confident planes of colour. A soft yet vivid palette of greens, yellows and blues bring a lyrical quality to the scene. Expressive painterly brushstrokes lend a sense of movement and spontaneity, evoking the energy of the landscape rather than a literal depiction.
With its dynamic composition and modernist interpretation of the countryside, this painting evokes both nostalgia and vitality – a quiet moment brimming with form and colour.
This large oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. There are some minor age-related spots visible in the cloud area of the painting, otherwise it is in good vintage condition. The frame shows signs of wear, including areas of paint loss as shown.
Size: 85.5 x 100 cm (including frame)
