We are able to make out a tree to the left most edge of the composition, as well as a house that sits behind it. Larges swathes of deep and saturated colour line the bottom half of the canvas, making up the foreground of the picture. Beyond that, different shades of blue indicate the sea and then the sky. The artist has used contrasting colours and texture to create a sense of depth and space.

What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

    The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.
