As our eyes begin to get accustomed to the view before us, a river bridge slowly begins to reveal itself. This transitional effect between abstraction and reality and vice versa makes this painting wonderfully interesting to look at, and encourages us to move between different viewing modes.

Featuring prominently in this composition is the small church of Saint-Valery, which sits by the side of the cliff along the Alabaster coast, under the early morning light. Interestingly, the churchyard holds the tomb of the Cubist artist Georges Braque, who was inspired and mesmerised by Varengeville and lived there for many years. In this painting, the artist has used a wonderful array of light and pastel colours to capture the landscape, creating a post impressionist feel.
