He has stopped his walk and is standing casually, listening and looking to something in front of him (which could be us, the viewer).     The artist has focussed in on a single figure – a man stands in an alley, looking straight on at us. What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

    The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.

    A very large, striking modernist Swedish artwork painted in oil onto canvas. A minimalist composition of trees on either side of a path forms this picture, painted in a very restrained palette. This piece is perhaps a preparatory study for a final painting – there is a distinct rawness to the almost monochrome palette, where paint has been applied very thinly to the canvas.  Yet there remains a palpable beauty to this rawness – the distinct outlines and simplicity of the paint application allow us to focus our attention on the balance of the shapes and forms, including the way the branches of the trees weave in and out of each other, creating structure and pattern within the picture.

    This original oil is housed in a beautiful distressed greenish-grey frame, which has a rough and unrefined look to it which we think suits the painting very well. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is in a ‘distressed’ style and so has imperfections that are intentional. The frame is slightly big for the canvas and so there is a slight gap between the canvas and the frame but this gap is very minimal.
