  • The Alley

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An outstanding mid-century modernist style painting of a street scene in a quiet neighbourhood, executed in oil.

The artist shows off his painterly skills – displaying his talents of the use of a palette knife not only in the application of paint, but in mixing colours as well.

Through the selection of naturalistic colours, as well as the use of a palette knife in a swift and sweeping motion, areas of smooth creamy paint fill the canvas, adding a lovely three-dimensional texture to the painted surface and also capturing the raw feel of the worn and weathered building surfaces.

This oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary distressed silver frame. It has some minor scuffs but this is typical for a frame of this age and adds to the charm of the ‘distressed’ style of it.

  • The Pantry

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A skilfully executed mid century Swedish still life painted in oil on to board.  The artist has used a rich, earthy palette to create this still life composition, and has included areas of impasto (where the paint is applied thickly enough to stand proud from the surface) which create texture. There is an element of mystery to this picture, as not all the objects are discernible. The artist has used bold, distinct lines to create these shapes and forms and has focused on these formal elements as opposed to trying to paint a realistic still life picture.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which is very unique. It has an off white, ridged outer border, followed by a grey fabric lined window and then a silver inner window. The silver window has some minor scuffing typical for a painting of this age. The painting is in very good vintage condition.

  • Winter Wood

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A stunning winter landscape painted in subtle and mellow tones of brown, grey, and white, punctuated by two figures in the foreground. A simple yet captivating composition, made possible by the almost monochrome colour palette.

The figure on the left carries a pile of log in his arms, presumably retrieved from the shed he is walking out of, and a second figure next to him with her backs to us is about to do the same. They brave the stark, bitter cold (aptly conveyed by the colour palette that the artist has used) but we know they are soon to return home to a warm fire.

The panting is housed in a beautiful wood frame with an inner silver window that illuminates the painting wonderfully. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Halcyon Garden

    Sold

    SOLD.

A gorgeous impressionist oil painting depicting a lady in a hat seated out in a garden, reminiscent of the style of the French painter Auguste Renoir. This artwork has a sense of the romantic, and in its colour palette and brush work there is a soft-focus evocation of a halcyon day. The artist has used the same comma-like brushwork pattern for both sitter and background, creating a rather romantic effect where the dappled sunlight on the leaves of the trees has cast a similar light on the sitter’s body and chair, so she beautifully blends into her surroundings.

It is housed in a very unique frame. Within the outer gilt frame there is a grey slip which has speckles of coloured paint lightly applied to it. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A delightful mid 20th century still life executed in oil on canvas, featuring an array of objects including a bowl of onions, a green jug and 2 planters atop a wooden table.

Through the use of textured and painterly brushstrokes, the painting has a great tactility.

The artist has confidently worked with a restrained colour palette comprising shades of browns, greens and blue that imbue the work with a lively feel. A great deal of  attention has been paid in capturing the shadows and light reflections on the objects, creating a strong sense of three dimensionality in the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary robust gilt frame with dark brown tints. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some scuffs to the edges, as shown in photos, typical for a frame of this age.

  • Winter Trees

    Sold

    SOLD.

A quaint, peaceful picture of winter trees, painted in oil onto board in 1936.  The palette is subtle – earthy browns, mellow yellows and pastel pinks and blues make up a soft composition. This quiet picture would sit beautifully on a shelf, adding interest to any spot without being too intrusive.

This oil on board is in good vintage condition. There are some areas of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint) as seen in the photos, but the paint layer is stable overall. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. The painting is housed in a deep silver frame with an outer green patina,  which picks up on the palette of the painting and illuminates it. The frame has some marks and scuffs as seen in photos.

  • Perspective

    Sold

    SOLD.

A subtle and soothing panoramic landscape, rendered in oil in 1964. Depicting vast open skies and rural land, the work has been executed in a semi-abstract manner with beautiful muted pastel colours.

Long, gentle and sweeping horizontal brushstrokes fill the canvas, enriching it as it overflows with softness and calm.

The artist shows off his painterly skills – displaying his talents by using contrasting planes of colours to demonstrate a sense of depth in the work.

This oil on canvas is housed in an elegant gilt frame which complements it very well. There are small spots of surface discolouration to the right side of the painting (as seen in photos), but these are visible only upon close inspection and do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. The frame has some minor scuffing but again this is typical for its age and if anything these imperfections add an overall charm to the piece.

  • Horizon

    Sold

    SOLD.

This minimalist mid century oil on board has a typically modernist feel.  Although it is possible to discern some features in what appears to be a landscape, the artist has abstracted the forms such that this can be open to interpretation. The painting has a lovely raw matte texture, and has a distinct focus on line, shape, form and colour. The artist has used features of the landscape as inspiration for abstraction.  This painting has a ‘St Ives School’ feel to it, and is certainly reminiscent of the works by modern British artists such as Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis.

It is housed in a simple white frame that suits it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

Pictorial details have been blurred and a suffused glow washes over the picture, eliminating visual clarity. However, we are still able to discern figures in black congregating in the distance of this townscape filed with monuments; which gives this painting its compositional depth.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. Is housed in a complementary silver frame with a linen lining, that suits the painting perfectly. There is a small area of surface paint loss to the frame, commensurate with its age (shown in photos).

  • The Tanker

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A beautifully monochromatic work of art presenting a ship sailing solo in the ocean. There is the sense of the quiet, but also of the vastness of the ocean. In this painting, the tanker appears tiny within the expansive ocean and sky.

The artist has used a restrained palette comprising varying shades of grey, and it is this darkness of both the land and water that conveys a sense of power and strength, that envelopes the whole picture, including what would normally be an enormous tanker.  The artist has skilfully managed to convey the power and strength while still evoking an overall sense of visual calm and stillness in the painting.

The oil painting is housed in a very complementary gilt frame, which has a few minor nicks around the edges, but this does not detract from the overall beauty of the picture. The painting is in very good vintage condition with no losses.

  • Coast in Colour

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century coastal scape, painted in oil onto canvas. The artist appears to have taken inspiration from the modernist concept of fauvism, which is a style characterised by strong non-naturalistic colours and bold brushwork. The forms of the subjects (in this case the land, trees, sea and sky) have been simplified, making them appear quite abstract. The artist has also used complementary/opposing colours side by side, which make the painting look brighter.

This oil is housed in its original mid century off-white frame with a gilt border and an inner white slip. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Expression

    Sold

    SOLD

A mid century Swedish painting executed in the abstract expressionist style. Abstract expressionism is characterised by gestural brush-strokes, and the impression of spontaneity, and is expressive and emotional in its effect. In this painting, a range of bright and striking colours have been applied in various ways – we se areas of brush work, areas of splatter, scratching, and areas of application with a palette knife. These varying applications combined with several areas of thick impasto (where the paint is applied thickly enough to stand proud from the surface) have created this dynamic and energetic composition.

The painting is housed in a simple wooden frame which suits it well. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • The Fishermen

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully dynamic expressionist piece by Swedish artist Arne Wallsten, depicting two fishermen who have just come back from the shore after a long day out at see.

Wallsten’s quick and thick brushstrokes and contrasting colours convey intense movement within the picture. Large brushstrokes of dark blue and grey signify the inclement weather the fishermen have had to face all day while out at sea, and Wallsten has further extended this sense of blustery and rough weather into the land, where he has painted the ground almost as though it is itself a turbulent surface. Long vertical, expressionist strokes of yellow, brown and orange on the house to the right indicate that it has had to face the element – its roof and walls rough and rugged.

Wallsten was born in 1932 in Lund. He is know for figures in interiors and exteriors, and his paintings always carry a narrative.

This oil on canvas is housed in its original wood and painted gilt frame. It is in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 39 x 47 cm (including frame)

This painting would pair nicely with another Arne Wallsten painting of a similar size which is also available in our collection. View it here.

A large and bold mid century abstract oil on canvas, painted in 1966. Distinct, expressionist brushstrokes have been used across this composition to create this lively and dynamic painting. The artist has played with a myriad of colours, abstracting what appears to be a cityscape down to contrasting colours in rectangular blocks. The top section of the canvas has a more restrained palette, with a blend of greys and greens, but the colours get increasingly rich as we move down from the canvas. In the middle section, we see the use of darker black outlines as well.

  • Pinks & Linen

    Sold

    SOLD

A really stunning mid century Swedish still life in oil, painted in 1944. This bright and cheery picture has been painted in an expressionist manner, with lively and distinct brushstrokes in a beautiful harmony of colours.  The tall vase of pink florals capture our initial attention, and as our eyes move downwards we begin to notice the gorgeous set of apples in the lower half of the picture. The artist has chosen to paint these in ‘post impressionist’ style, choosing non naturalistic colours which really make them stand out. The colourful flowers and apples have been set against a pastel blue and purple background, which really pulls the whole still life composition together.
