A large and very well executed 1959 limited edition (28/30) lithograph, signed by Waldemar Sjölander.

The artist uses  tonal gradation, outlines, and shapes to create this playful composition. The figure is fragmented into several three dimensional forms, and plays on optical illusion. • Regalia

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and striking mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto board.

The painting presents 4 figures evenly spaced out, that appear to be in Central Asian dress.  The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out, focusing our attention on the qualities of colour, form, shape, and brushstrokes.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has reconstructed the figures in their costumes down to geometric blocks of contrasting lively colours. Layers of colours have also been skilfully mixed and applied to form a beautiful background with a rust appearance.

This oil on board is housed in a cream frame with a linen inner border. There are some areas of wear and paint loss to both the painting and frame, but this is in keeping with the overall vintage style of the piece.

    SOLD.

A vibrant and visually striking mid century modernist style figurative portrait painting, executed in oil onto board.

The composition features an everyday scene in an interior setting, where a lady is depicted sitting on a chair sewing with yarn. There are yarn balls around her, as she sits beside an open window overlooking a garden outside. The artist has intentionally chosen not to paint her facial details, focusing instead on the form of her head and hair.

The use of expressive brushstrokes and the myriad of rich and lively colours in this painting wonderfully reflects the pleasure the sitter derives from sewing.

This large and colourful oil on board would be a perfect choice to brighten and uplift a space. The painting is housed in a complementary cream wooden frame with an inner gilt window. The frame and painting are both in excellent vintage condition.

  • Pastel Coastal Village

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and visually striking mid-century oil composition, that beautifully captures the essence of Fiskebäckskil, a charming coastal village in Sweden.

Painted in a modernist style, the artwork presents a vibrant landscape with a river meandering through the center of the painting, adorned with an array of boats gently swaying in the water. In the background, a cluster of houses perched on a hill adds a touch of architectural charm.

The painting is characterised by its bold use of a plethora of pastel colours that complement each other and that infuse the painting with liveliness.  Short, visible brushstrokes are also evident, creating depth and an expressive quality, enlivening the composition.

This oil on canvas is framed in a gilt frame which suits the painting very well. There is some light scattered craquelure as shown in the close ups, but the paint layer is otherwise stable. There is some light wear to the frame but this is in keeping with the style. Overall the appearance is very good.

  • Abstract Coast

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and gentle coastal landscape composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1953 on the reverse.

Executed in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has intentionally left details of the coastal landscape fairly obscure as he depicts two boats by the edge of a body of water, and a row of trees lining the coast in the background of the painting.

The composition has been skilfully reconstructed down to blocks of contrasting colours and brushstrokes. Using a restrained palette comprising darker and lighter shades of blue, green and brown, a combination of short and gentle brushstrokes have been used to paint the lighter shades of the sky and sea, and swift and expressive brushstrokes have been used to paint the darker shades of the trees, boats and land in the foreground. These contrasting tones and brushstrokes have been thoughtfully executed to demonstrate depth to the painting. Overall, this restful composition has a very calming quality, and can add a soothing effect to any interior space.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with linen outer border and an inner gilt window. There are minor scuffs to the frame, but overall the painting and frame are both in very good vintage condition.

  • Sailing Blue (very large)

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large, panoramic oil depicting a traditionally-rigged sailing vessel, painted in oil in 1947. This bold, expressive oil features rich colouring and distinct and dynamic brushstrokes. The artist’s confident and skilful painterly manner is certainly apparent, and the combination of the rich palette, dynamic strokes and large size would make this a statement piece in any interior.

The painting is housed in a wide and robust gilt and green frame that suits it very well. The painting has areas of craquelure and some minor areas of surface paint loss which are visible upon close inspection and are typical for an oil painting of this age (as shown in photos), but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting. The frame is in good condition with some very minor scuffs to the inner window.

  • The Island

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and highly textured mid-century abstract modernist composition, executed in oil onto board.

This abstract composition blurs the boundary between painting and sculpture, with its three dimensional surface protruding from the board. A series grooves and and lines have been etched into the thickly painted surface, which features an array of thoughtfully arranged geometric shapes in rich and lively colours. The grooves and lines almost resemble threads, almost as though the surface has been embroidered. The artist has clearly pushed the medium to its limits, experimenting with several textural effects.

Although abstract in nature, the artwork could perhaps resemble an island with areas of land, mountains and sea.

With its focus on the beauty of colour, line, texture, brushstrokes, shapes and patterns, this intriguing and very energetic artwork would make for an excellent statement piece in any interior. Its punch of colour and sculptural qualities are a visual feast for the eyes.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary black frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Kitty

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and very striking abstract modernist oil composition of a seated cat, painted onto canvas.

This really well executed semi abstract painting of a cat has a heavy emphasis on line, shape and colour. The artist appears to have used one continues thick black outline to create the shape of the cat, and has added 4 large angular geometrical shapes presumably to signify the patches of colour on the cat. All this is set against a vivid red background, set within a gorgeous gilt frame.

Given the size of the painting, it would make a brilliant statement piece in an interior. The painting is housed in a very complementary gilt frame with an inner grey border. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • A Walk in Nature

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and restful mid century modernist landscape composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

This panoramic view of nature depicts a quiet path running through vast lands, almost inviting the viewer to take a walk. The path leads up to a large tree that punctuates the centre of the painting, and also goes on into the horizon.

Painted in a beautifully vivid colour palette, this well-balanced painting with an equal distribution of sky and land is enriched with a meditative and calming aesthetic.

Flat planes of contrasting colours painted in gentle sweeping brushstrokes help to create a sense of depth and width to the painting. These brushstrokes contrast against the swift and expressive brushstrokes that have been used to paint the path and tree.

Running close to a metre in length, the painting’s size would make it the perfect addition above a bed or sofa.

  • Forest

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and textured mid century abstract modernist oil composition, painted in 1964.

Titled ‘Forest (Movement through Forest)’, it gives us wonderful insight into the artist’s source of inspiration. On the one hand, this piece is completely abstract and without its title, we might only see something non-representational. Here at The Discerning Palette, before translating the title, this piece reminded us of levels in an industrial building or something related to construction and the modern industrial world. The title added another layer of meaning to the piece, and opened our eyes to a different interpretation altogether. We were suddenly able to ‘see the wood through the trees’, pun intended.

Dynamic strokes criss-cross across the canvas in a myriad of angles and levels. Areas of impasto have been created to the thick application of paint, resulting in a piece full of texture and layers of blended and unblended colour.

This exceptional oil has been framed interestingly, with strips of  clear perspex fixed to the canvas edges. This gives a box like appearance to the piece, and adds to its ‘modern’ look. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is missing a small corner to the lower right, as shown in the close ups. This missing corner is not obvious until looked at closely.

  • Portrait in Yellow

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and brilliantly executed modernist figurative oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting depicts a silhouette of a female figure in yellow clothing, set against a light coloured background.

The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.

Large swathes of rich and vivid colours have been applied to the canvas, creating areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. The artist has also wonderfully layered contrasting colours to reveal  great depth within this striking painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a silver frame with linen border. There is some light craquelure to the lower half of the painting, and an area of paint loss along the lower section, as shown in the close ups. However this paint loss is fairly inconspicuous due to the colour blocking style of the piece.  The frame and inner border have some general age wear and marks.

  • The Swimmers

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and very unique semi abstract mid century composition in oil, painted in 1962.

The scene appears to be of two swimmers, captured from a very interesting angle. It is almost as if we, the viewers, are under the water looking up at them. The two figures have just dived in, and we see the swoosh of the water and bubbles all around them.

The artist has left the composition very ‘open’, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to capture the effect of the moving water. The figures have also been paired right down, their bodies only partially visible.

The way the artist has depicted this scene is very inspiring – it is certainly not an easy scene to paint, and yet he has managed to put across the essence of what is at play here – the way the light hits the water and the figures, and the resulting distortions, as well as the sense of movement and air within the water.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a light frame with linen border. There are some minor scuffs to the frame, and some very slight age toning to the linen border. Overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

The artist has used a simple yet very effective and rigorous grid composition, where black lines are set against thicker vertical lines in mustard and outlined in blue, over a background of off-white. This geometric grid composition is reminiscent of modernist artists like Piet Mondrian, who also created patterns with syncopated rhythms.

The painting is housed in a very complementary maroon wood frame, that really completes the piece. There are some areas of restoration to the painting, and there are areas of scuffing and paint loss to the frame, as shown in photos.

    Size: 57 x 102 cm (including frame)

A large but very peaceful seascape, painted in oil onto canvas.

  • Fauvist Path

    Sold

    SOLD.

A lively and emotive modernist style landscape painting, executed in oil onto board and painted in 1953.

The artwork depicts a pathway surrounded by lush crops, that leads up to a red cottage. Leaning towards fauvism, the painting is characterised by an intricate arrangement of rich colours including blues and yellows. Although spontaneous and impulsive lines fill the canvas, each brushstroke has been thoughtfully executed and it imbues the work with a sense of dynamism.

This painting is housed in a stunning deep-profiled and heavy wood frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Green Land

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautifully expansive and panoramic mid century oil, painted onto board.

A row of farmhouses lines the lower section of the picture, followed by fields above that pan out in to the distant horizon. We get a sense that the fields are never-ending, and that this calming scene before us goes on undisturbed for miles and miles.

The artist has used a restrained colour palette, reserving the bolder greens and browns for the lower section of the picture, then getting increasingly lighter as he moves up the picture, until the sky which mimics the lightest greens of the fields.

There is a palpable sense of serenity and restfulness with this picture – the type of feeling you get when you’re out in the rural countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of city life..

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid-century silver frame, that illuminates the painting. There are minor areas of scuff on the frame.
