A soothing mid-century modernist painting that captures an abstracted waterfront scene rendered with bold geometric blocks and restrained tonal contrasts, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1968.
The viewer’s perspective is elevated, possibly from a balcony or overpass, looking out across a harbour populated with moored boats and a white ferry gliding through calm waters.
The artist has used a flattened, semi-cubist approach to space and form, using simplified shapes and thick, deliberate brushstrokes to construct the architecture and landscape. A palette of muted greys, brown, rust, and soft blues evokes an overcast or wintry atmosphere, while the warm orange of the lower rooftops adds grounding contrast.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very minor scuffing.
Size: 39.5 x 45.5 cm (including frame)
