A mid-century oil painting that captures the quiet moment of an ice fisher, seated beside a small sled on a vast, frozen expanse, by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The figure is huddled near a freshly cut fishing hole, his vibrant clothing and gear providing a focal point against the endless white landscape. The distant horizon, painted in soft bands of pastel blues, greens, and violets, evokes the crisp stillness of a winter sky.

Minimalist and impressionistic, the work favours capturing mood and atmosphere over intricate details. The artist conveys emotion through the restrained composition, focusing the viewer’s attention on the quiet perseverance of the scene.

The palette is soft and delicate, capturing the serene nature of the scene.  The artist has used smooth, horizontal brushstrokes to build the expansive landscape and layered sky, while shorter, expressive marks define the figure and the cluster of dry grasses in the foreground. These contrasting textures add visual interest to the painting.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has very minot scuffing but is in very good condition overall.
