A wonderfully textured and expressive mid century abstract painting, executed in oil onto canvas.
This painting is visually calming in appearance, as it is composed with a colour palette comprising various shades of grey as well as underlying darker shades of blue, black and brown.
The artist has skilfully used the impasto technique – applying thick layers of paint to provide a textural dimension to the artwork. This thick accumulation of paint that lends a three-dimensional quality not only adds character to the piece, but a sense of dynamism too.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary grey frame with a silver lining, that pairs perfectly with the colours of painting. There are scattered areas of craquelure and paint loss across the artwork (particularly at the top) commensurate with its age.

A simple composition with a strikingly modernist ethos. Here the landscape has been reduced down to basic colour and paint markings. The artist is clearly not trying to mimic real life, and has chosen instead draw attention to the fact that this is his own rendition of the elements of the landscape. There is a distinct rawness to the painting – the artist has not hidden the strokes of the paint brush, or the background of the substrate he is working on, nor has he masked the way in which he has rendered the rocks and trees with his cross hatching technique.
This fantastic painting is housed in a gilt frame and is in excellent vintage condition.

A brilliantly executed modernist landscape composition in oil, painted in 1970.
In this picture, two boats sit in shallow waters, and behind them we see a small cottage that is backed by mountains. The artist has painted in distinctly separate planes of colour, using a tiered effect of complementary colours that gives the composition its depth. The palette is restrained, dominated mainly by blues, yellows, greys and browns. The brushstrokes are visible, giving us a sense of the artist’s process of creation as well as giving the painting a textured effect. The painting has a very restful ambience to it, and would be such a fine addition to any interior.
The painting is housed in a lovely mid century wood frame with an inner gilt border. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition. There is a small mark on the painting ( we have included a very close up photo of this) but this mark is quite inconspicuous when the painting is up hanging on the wall. The paint layer is very stable overall and has no other issues.

A bright and very well executed mid century oil, painted in canvas.
We see a female figure en verso, her form reduced to a series of thin outlines in black. Wide and sweeping brushstrokes in pastel colours have been applied – vertical strokes for the figure, and horizontal strokes in the background. This seemingly simple composition has in fact been very skilfully executed, with the contrasting shades of non realistic colour creating depth and a sense of space, light and shadow.
The painting is housed in a thin frame, which gives it a contemporary edge. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

A very large and well executed semi-abstract still life, painted in oil onto canvas.
The painting features fauvist elements, such as the unusual juxtaposition of colours as well as the highly gestural application of paint.
A bowl and a candelabra sit along a windowsill with 3 large window panes that look out onto a plant filled view as well as a gate and street line. The artist has skilfully used his paint and colours sparingly, yet has managed to convey such an array of elements within his abstract and gestural strokes.
There is a wonderful diaphanous quality to this painting which makes it such a unique statement piece.
The painting is housed in a simple oak frame which complements it brilliantly. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The wood frame has some minor scuffs.

A very well executed mid century cubist still life, painted in oil onto canvas.
Reminiscent of works by cubist artists such as Pablo Picasso, this painting has broken the figure and her instrument down into distinct planes, aiming to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space and so suggest their three dimensional form. In doing so, this artist has emphasised the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth.
The painting is housed in a simple gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some scuffs and marks.

A large and very striking still life composition that has been painted onto board. The artist has used a variety of media, including oil and gouache, to render this detailed composition. The surface of the board has been painted over with a matte textured white, and on top of that the artist has used oil, gouache and watercolour to paint the objects, resulting in a very striking colour palette that really stands out from the surface, while at the same time achieving an incredible level of detail. The choice of tools and objects have created a very well balanced horizontal composition, while at the time drawing the viewer in and encouraging us to inspect all the details. The painting is housed in a greenish-blue wood slip that frames it very well, giving it a contemporary feel. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition. An outstanding mid century still life painting of pears, painted onto board. A group of 5 pears in varying colours, ranging from greens, to red-orange, to brown and white, are set against a striking blue glass plate. The painting has a distinct depth to it, as a result of the varying textures that the artist has used. Areas of thick impasto (where the paint is applied thickly enough to stand proud of the surface) are evident, and one of the pears has some form of aggregate applied that have created a thick mottled surface to the left pear.
The frame of the painting is a beauty in itself, and brings out all the textures and colours of the painting wonderfully. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

A really stunning mid century Swedish still life in oil, painted in 1944. This bright and cheery picture has been painted in an expressionist manner, with lively and distinct brushstrokes in a beautiful harmony of colours. The tall vase of pink florals capture our initial attention, and as our eyes move downwards we begin to notice the gorgeous set of apples in the lower half of the picture. The artist has chosen to paint these in ‘post impressionist’ style, choosing non naturalistic colours which really make them stand out. The colourful flowers and apples have been set against a pastel blue and purple background, which really pulls the whole still life composition together.
The painting is housed in a gorgeous distressed sand coloured distressed wood frame with an inner white border, which matches the character and style of the painting perfectly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

This calm and mellow landscape in oil is reminiscent of the pointillist works by George Seurat, where distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. Although not strictly pointillist, this painting certainly has elements of the technique. Short and distinct strokes that have been created with just the tip of the paint brush have been used to form this composition. However, there is an added complexity – each individual stroke, though small and short, has various colours mixed and blended within the one stroke. Each stroke of paint has been applied thickly, adding a wonderful textural effect and sculptural quality to the painting. The artist has also managed to convey a distinct sense of light and dark within the picture, capturing the shadows of the winter sun within the layered composition.
The painting is housed in a beautiful distressed brown-beige wood frame with a deep profile and an inner linen slip. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A really unique semi-abstract oil painting of a hare in an autumnal landscape. One could be forgiven for missing the hare on first glance, as it almost blends into the grassy landscape. The artist has managed to convey the reality of catching a fleeting sight of a hare leaping through the grassy meadow – one blink and you’ll miss the little creature. Expressive brushstrokes in earthy colours of orange, rusty browns and reds, and greys and greens form the majority of the picture, with the stunningly painted hare starkly in the middle – its white ears and tail stand out from the background, drawing our attention lest we miss it.
The painting is housed in an simple wood frame, which suits it wonderfully. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame appears to have had some restoration work done to upper left and lower left corners, as shown in the photos.

A fantastic modernist still life rendered in oil in a cubist manner. Painted in 1962, the artist has used a vibrant palette and created areas of impasto (where the paint is applied thickly and stands proud from the surface) to create this striking composition. Distinct brushstrokes and bold outlines reminds us of a modernist ethos – the artist is experimenting with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction. The artist has moved away from traditional forms of perspective, and has used blocks and planes of contrasting colour to create a sense of depth within the picture.
The painting is housed a a very complementary wood frame with a painted white order. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

An effervescent and diaphanous oil depicting white flowers in a clay pot.
Areas of thick impasto create areas of texture and three dimensionality. In this very ‘open’ composition, there are no distinct forms – we cannot make out any specific detailing of the flowers and leaves. Freely brushed colours are used instead of lines and contours, portraying the overall visual effect of the floral arrangement, rather than realistic details. As our eyes move around the picture, we can also notice the fabric of the canvas showing through along the bottom section of the painting, adding to the general ethos of this as a painting rather than a realistic depiction of flowers.

A beautiful and well-balanced still life that captured our hearts upon first sight.
Presented atop a table draped with a cloth is a well-decorated pitcher filled with red tulips and pussy willows, surrounded by 7 oranges and a small green bowl.
Very soft and precise brushstrokes have been used to create a delicate and realistic effect to the work, and there is calm fluency from one subject to the next.
The artist has wonderfully managed to capture the creases and folds in the table cloth, and the great play of colours and reflective shadowy effects in the oranges and flowers create a sense of three dimensionality in the work.
There is a strong focus of attention on the objects as its bold colours stand out in contrast to the background painted in beige with light pink undertones.
The painting is in excellent vintage condition. It comes well-presented in a thick gilt frame that has areas of paint loss.

An expressionist scene of 2 female bathers against a watery landscape. The figures have their backs to the viewer, and we are only able to able to catch sight of the side profiles.
Bathers in art have been a long-standing tradition since the Renaissance, and this artwork in particular is reminiscent of the bathing scenes from Paul Cezanne.
The forms of the two nudes are bold and well emphasised, as their silhouettes have been outlined by thick black lines .The artist has used quick and short brushstrokes, as well as heavy impasto to create a sense of three dimensionality in this work. The orderly blocks of blue in differing shades in the background helps create the illusion of depth in this painting.
The painting is surrounded by a fantastic and robust original ash and green frame.

Through its exploration of lines and generating and defining of shapes such as the curve, circles, angles and arabesque, this painting picks up on the style and ideas of the Movement paintings of British St Ives School artist Sir Terry Frost, who explored concepts around creating rhythm, counterpoint, interruption and repetition.
A wonderful visual vocabulary of bright primary colours, shapes, and movement transforms what would normally just be four drinking vessels, and has given them a life of their own.
The magic in this is that the artist has taken ordinary objects, and has looked at them in a way that has removed all preconceived notions of visual experience in order to open up the possibility of recreating and reimagining that defies reality. There is an openness to serious play with colour and shape. This painting is simple and surprisingly subtle, but very satisfying to look at, and to enjoy.

Why imitate reality when you can imagine a new one?
Here the most powerful resources of the artist – creativity, imagination and reinvention – have been harnessed. Such a delicate combination has been achieved: the celebration of the common things of everyday life without imitation. Instead, we have ‘visual music’, composed using the formal artistic elements of pattern, harmony, colour, and rhythm.
In the foreground of this enchanting artwork, we see 2 red poppies in a vase, situated around a jug, an onion and 3 stones. What is captivating is the tribal patterns on the objects, and the striking colour palette comprising of black, white and purple being used.
With these objects dominating the artwork, what can be quite missable to the eye is the unique location where this scene is taking place – the desert! In the background, the sun is glowing in the clear blue sky, watching over the vast land and sand dunes beneath it.
This charming oil on board is in excellent vintage condition, and comes in a beautifully carved wooden frame.

Such a delicate combination has been achieved: the celebration of the common things of everyday life without imitation. Instead, we have ‘visual music’, composed using the formal artistic elements of pattern, harmony, colour, and rhythm.
We have abstract planes of strong colour, intensified by chromatic contrasts which cause each saturated hue to reverberate in the eye. This ‘no depth’ style might seem simple to achieve, but when examined further, the combination of different elements in fact take great skill. The objects have been deliberately flattened to bring them parallel to the picture surface, deployed on a table top that has been similarly brought up and forward by 90 degrees to align them with the canvas plane. These familiar objects acquire a new life of their own within the composed world of the painting, bounded by the rectangular surface itself and their own pictorial structure of shape and colour.
This meticulous and vivacious oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. The black complementary frame as seen in the photos is included with the painting.
