Still Life with Chalice
Sold
SOLD
A striking mid-century modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1956.
Central to the work is a dark green bottle and a silver-toned chalice, rendered with thick brushstrokes and strong contouring. A pair of oranges rest in the foreground, its saturated tones adding a burst of warmth against the cool tonalities.
The composition is built on interlocking planes of colour – muted greens and blues, yellow, and greys – forming an almost Cubist backdrop that suggests a tabletop and surrounding walls. The brushwork is expressive and textured, with visible strokes that give the surface a sculptural quality. The use of shadow and contrast imbues the otherwise abstracted objects with weight and presence.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary white frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has slight wear to its edges as shown, but is in good condition overall.Â
Size: 46 x 34.5 cm (including frame)
