  • Alabaster

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but very visually pleasing mid century abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Using a careful selection of pastel colours, the subtle palette is delightfully calming. The small size of the painting draws our eyes in, encouraging us to study the tonal gradations in the colours, as well as enjoy the various textures of the creamy paint.

This oil on canvas is housed in a painted wooden frame, the colour of which complements the painting perfectly. There is some light craquelure present to the painting, due to the age and thickness of the paint application, but the paint layer is very stable. Overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Pink District

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful abstract composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil stick and graphite onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Tram Stop

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small yet very striking modernist street scene composition, executed in oil onto board.

The painting depicts a bustling scene in a city with a tram stopping on the left, figures lining a street walk on the right, and a building motif situated in the background of the painting.

The artist has uniquely highlighted the silhouettes of the tram, building and figures with a thin orange outline, further emphasising their respective forms.

The painting is characterised by a beautiful rich palette comprising shades of blue, orange and white, as well as expressive and lightly textured brushstrokes that reflect the uplifting energy of the city.

This oil on board is housed in a stunning deep-profiled frame that pairs wonderfully with the painting. There are very minor scuffs to the frame in keeping with age. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.

  • Boat in Port

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century semi abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

Here we see a boat docked in front of a building, but the artist has chosen to focus on formal qualities such as form, shape, line and colour. Working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has very cleverly reduced the scene down to flat planes of colour, creating a cubist, geometric effect in the composition, bringing our attention to the fact that this is indeed a painting on a surface, shaped by the artist’s own view and perception, as opposed to a realistic depiction of a boat by a shed. Yet details like the stillness of the water, the reflection of the boat, and the structures involved are still so masterfully captured.

This oil painting is housed in a very well suited gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

An expressive abstract modernist oil on board, painted in 1967.

This modernist oil features large and sweeping gestural brushstrokes, and the impression of spontaneity. There is a sense of an outpouring of emotion, and we can visualise the artist’s hand dancing around the picture, creating layers of dynamic marks on the surface.

The painting is housed in a simple white frame. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition. The frame has some very minor scuffs but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Naturelle

    Sold

    SOLD.

A stunning mid century figure study executed in oil, painted onto board.

The artist has beautifully captured the form of the figure’s body, using a subtle range of beige, pink and nude tones, skilfully blending the figure into the background yet keeping her form distinct from the scene.

This very masterful study features broad and gestural brushstrokes, creating texture and three dimensionality while still maintaining its wonderfully delicate nature.

This small yet powerful oil painting is housed in a very complementary gilt frame. There is a very small area of surface loss to the top edge of the painting, as shown in close ups, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. There is very minor scuffing to the frame.

  • Self Portrait

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and very well-balanced portrait, executed in oil onto board.

The painting depicts a self-portrait of the artist himself. Wearing a yellow hat, the figure is not facing the viewer, and we only get a glimpse of his side profile. The facial features have intentionally been left discreet, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form and shape.

Executed in a modernist style and using a limited palette comprising shades of brown, yellow and black, the artist has skilfully reconstructed the composition down to blocks of contrasting colours that have been defined by bold outlines, drawing our attention to their individual form and shape to compose this brilliant portrait.

This oil on board is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner linen border. The painting and frame are both in excellent vintage condition.

  • Bridge Crossing

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but very charming modernist expressionist oil, painted in 1937.

In this picture we see a figure crossing a stone bridge that leads towards a cottage, surrounded by lush greenery. This painting is both reminiscent of the post-impressionist style of artists like Van Gogh, as well as of Fauvist painters like  André Derain. It features bold, undisguised brushstrokes in vibrant colours, and is very much a subjective, emotional response to the landscape (as opposed to just painting the landscape as realistically as possible).

This vibrant oil composition is housed in a dark wood and gilt frame that suits its homely look. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Rest

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small and poignant mid century figurative oil portrait by the well-establish Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum and Jönköping Museum.

Executed in a semi-abstract manner, the composition presents a seated figure who is at rest. The artist has left out all realistic detail, using gentle yet expressive brushwork, and there is an overall softness to the way he has captured the scene. Despite the use of the very restrained warm colour palette, the artist has very skilfully imbued the painting with a luminosity, which is further enhanced by the gilt frame that surrounds it.

This oil on canvas board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The frame corners have a few small losses, but overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Magpies

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fun and striking mid-century semi abstract modernist composition of magpies, executed in oil onto board.

The painting depicts three magpies in nature, standing on a tree branch and surrounded by green leaves.

Containing elements of cubism and abstraction, the artist has fragmented this composition down to shapes of contrasting colours and sizes using a rich and lively palette. Not only has he skilfully created an appearance of a stained glass window, but he has also created a sense of three-dimensionality in the way the respective colours are paired and  contrasted together.

This painting is housed in a wood frame with an inner linen lined border. There is some slight wear to the paint surface on the artwork, but this is commensurate with age and does not detract from its overall attractiveness. There is a small loss to the lower left section of the frame, as shown in close ups.

A stunning abstract composition in oil, painted by British artist Marian Hyland. The painting is housed in a handmade frame (by the artist) which has been crafted specifically for the painting that sits within it.

Marian’s practice centres around the relationships of space, shape and colour, created by the interplay between drawing, painting and collage.

In this piece, the process of mark making and layering, informed by observations of natural environmental processes (e.g. textures and marks left behind through decay/neglect, industrial architecture/landscapes and random associations of objects and surfaces) are important factors in the work.

Her paintings evolve intuitively to find rather than make the work. She continues to build up and simplify until the composition settles cohesively.
