A very confident and well-executed modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1976.
The composition presents an interior setting where a vase with pink flowers and a jug sit on a table, and are set against a blue-tiled backdrop.
Through the use of powerful, expressive, and intense brushstrokes as well as dark outlines, the painting expresses the rich emotions of the artist, and the style of the painting is reminiscent of the post-war French expressionist artist Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), who was also painting around this time.
The artist has also used the sgraffito technique, using the back of his paintbrush to create lines through the paint layer of the pink flowers, adding a sense of three-dimensionality and varied texture.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wide profile gilt frame . The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs, but this is in keeping with its vintage style.
Size: 74.5 x 64 cm (including frame)
