Affection
SOLD
A tender and captivating mid-century figurative painting, executed in oil onto board and dated 1944.
A female figure in a flowing red dress that is seated is the focal point of the composition and first captures our attention. She is cradling a baby in her arms affectionately, and her silhouette is highlighted through the use of bold black outlines. The bodies of the woman and baby meld together, forming a harmonious unity and symbolising the timeless bond between mother and child. They are set against vibrant orange and yellow hues with subtle hints of green and blue in the backdrop.
Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has omitted all realistic details and has also deliberately omitted the facial features of the figures. The use of painterly and expressive brushstrokes executed with vigour and confidence adds a beautiful textural quality to the painting, and the rich and vibrant colours heightens the emotionally charged atmosphere.
This oil on board comes unframed. The painting has some paint losses to the edges of board, but this would be hidden by a frame.
Size: 41 x 33 cm
