A large and brilliantly executed mid century portrait composition, executed in oil onto canvas.
This painting features a nun dressed entirely in black, with a geometrically composed background behind her. Here the artist has focused on formal elements of shape, form, line and colour, Subtle but brilliantly executed tonal differences in the figure’s robes enable us to make out the different directions that the fabric of her robes fall in. The fluidity of the drapery is juxtaposed against the angular lines of the buildings behind her. The restrained colour palette directs our attention the lines, brushstrokes and shapes within the composition.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting has some light craquelure present to its left side but paint layer is very stable. The frame has some marks and paint losses.
