  • Tree Grove

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and very striking mid century oil painted on canvas depicting a tree grove by a brook. A deep, rich, earth colour palette has been used – dark greens and browns and oranges are contrasted against the white of the brook and the sky, creating a wonderful sense of depth in the painting. Differing textures can be found across the large canvas, with some areas where the artist has allowed the canvas to show through, and other areas where thick layers of paint and impasto can be found. There is raw quality to the overall composition, and the artist has captured the essence of the natural landscape – the movement of the water in the brook, the light of the sky, and the earthiness of the grass and the trees.

The painting is housed in a simple wood frame, which suits it very well and gives it a slightly more contemporary edge. The large size and expressive style of this painting would make it a real statement feature piece in any interior. Painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Bloom

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and visually striking modernist style floral still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

Painted in an expressionist manner, the artwork is full of texture and character as it depicts a blooming pot of flowers placed against a blue coloured background.

Our eyes are immediately drawn to the flowers as their lighter shades of white and orange are contrasted against the deep and rich colour palette of dark blues greens and browns.

The artist displays his painterly skills, using the impasto technique by applying thick layers of paint such that it stands proud from the surface and adds a textural feel, as well as confidently executing long and bold brushstrokes to creating a composition full of dynamism.

This oil on canvas is housed in a deep-profile frame with 2 linen-lined windows that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are some very small areas of paint loss on the painting but the work is otherwise in very good vintage condition.

  • Mountain Top

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large mid century modernist abstract landscape, painted in oil onto board.

A range of patterns, shapes and colours fill the canvas, making up an abstracted landscape that appears to be houses on the side a mountain. This large and well-executed painting draws on a range of modernist concepts and influences including cubism and abstraction. As we spend time to study its colours, forms and play on geometric shapes, there is more than meets the eye.

A figure to the lower right corner punctuates this painting perfectly, drawing attention the fact that although mostly abstracted, this painting still has representational elements.

At over a metre in length, this striking abstract oil would certainly make a statement in any interior. It is housed in its original mid century frame. There is some paint loss to the left edge of the painting (as shown in photos) but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. Otherwise, both frame and painting are in good vintage condition.

  • Silhouettes

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and textured mid century oil, painted onto canvas.

This rather mysterious painting features a group of figures gathering and judging from their attire of dark robes, they appear to be monks. There is a real sense of movement within the picture, almost as if it the artist has painted a slightly blurry photograph. We get a palpable sense of the figures walking and gathering. The details of the figures such as their facial features, and the location they are at has been left out intentionally – the artist has chosen to focus on the shapes and forms of the figures, leaving only their silhouettes, juxtaposing their dark robes against the lighter white walls of the building behind them.

Thick layers of paint have been applied with both palette knife and brush, giving the picture a wonderful depth. The artist has used a restrained palette of black, blue, brown and white, which focuses our attention on the forms and figures.

The horizontally long shape of the artwork would make it an ideal piece to hang above a piece of furniture. Its restrained yet deep palette give it a flexibility, allowing it to suit both classic and modern interiors.

This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a silver frame which has some minor scuffing but this is in keeping with its age and style.

    Size: 33.5×75.5 cm (including frame)

The artist has painted in an expressive manner – swift yet delicate strokes fill the canvas, creating this panoramic harbour scene. On the left side of the painting we can just see side wall and top edge of a balcony, where we can picture ourselves (or the artist) standing and looking out at the beautiful view before us.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame, which is a robust light wood frame with a wide profile and visible grain. There is a also a green edging to the frame (as shown), which adds a lovely effect. The painting has some overall scattered craquelure, typical for a painting of this age.

  • Fauvist Landscape

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large mid century oil on canvas of a semi abstract landscape, painted in 1955.

Reminiscent of the 20th century modernist style of ‘fauvism’, this painting features the classic fauve feature of separating colour from its descriptive, representational purpose and allowing it to exist on the canvas as an independent element. in this picture, the colour establishes a structure within the work without being true to the natural world. Its brushstrokes also carry the fauve style of being short, separated and unblended, creating a sense of movement within the picture.

The painting is housed in a very complementary dark blue floater frame. This frame allows the edges of the canvas to be in full view, with a small gap between the canvas and the frame, giving it a more contemporary look.  The painting and frame are in good vintage condition with no outstanding issues.

  • Farmland

    Sold

    SOLD.

Dated 1944, this mid century oil on board features broad, expressive brushwork and a post impressionist style. Reminiscent of works by artists such as Van Gogh, this oil depicts the natural landscape but has a more personal use of colour and brushwork that express an emotional response to the landscape, rather than a  purely realistic response.  There is a real sense of light and movement within the picture, created through a wonderful harmony of colours.

This large painting is housed within a  wide profile gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some general scuffing which is commensurate with its age.

  • Mid Century Man

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and striking mid century portrait in oil, painted in 1945. Executed in a post impressionist style, the artist has used non naturalistic colours for both the figure and the background. The background has largely been painted in sections of colour blocks, creating a sense of depth through geometric shapes.

The subject matter is focused  – a single male figure with a cane stands in a street by a street lamp. He has stopped his walk and is standing casually, listening and looking to something in front of him (which could be us, the viewer). His hand is placed casually in his left pocket, legs crossed, shoulders slumped, and cigarette hanging loosely between his lips.

Although the figure has been painted in a looser and more expressive manner compared to the flat planes of the background, the artist has mirrored the colours in his suit to the colours in the background, creating a satisfying harmony within the picture.

This painting is housed in its original mid century gilt and wood frame, and is in excellent vintage condition.

  • Coast

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted on to canvas.

Although largely abstract in style, we are still able to discern that the artist is depicting a landscape. We are able to make out a tree to the left most edge of the composition, as well as a house that sits behind it. Larges swathes of deep and saturated colour line the bottom half of the canvas, making up the foreground of the picture. Beyond that, different shades of blue indicate the sea and then the sky. The artist has used contrasting colours and texture to create a sense of depth and space.

This large oil is housed in a very complementary rustic frame, which suits it wonderfully. This painting would fit well in both classic and contemporary interiors. Its large size and expressive use of colour make it a real statement piece. The painting and frame are in good vintage condition. There are some scattered areas of craquelure, but the paint layer is stable overall.

  • Spring Garden

    Sold

    SOLD.

A delightful and lively picturesque landscape composition, executed in oil in 1948.

The painting depicts a partial view of a balcony overlooking a well-manicured garden filled with colourful blooms and lush trees, as well as views of the calm blue sea that lies beyond it. The white chair in the foreground as well as garden furniture in the middle of the painting are empty, almost inviting and tempting the viewer to take a seat and enjoy the charming spring view.

Executed with expressive and painterly brushstrokes in vibrant and saturated colours including green and orange, this artwork is sure to brighten any interior setting and uplift one’s mood.

This oil on canvas is housed in a beautifully patterned wood frame with carvings. There are light scattered areas of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age), as well as a small area of paint loss along the left edge of the work (as shown in the photos). Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring.

  • Abstract Pots

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A large, mid century oil on canvas, painted in a modernist style.

Depicted in a semi-abstract manner, a pair of potted plants sit by what appears to be window. The composition shows the artist’s interest in conveying the physicality of objects and surrounding space, and portrays cubist influences. If we focus our attention on the pots, we notice that they have been fragmented, flattened and abstracted, reduced down to geometric outlines. By breaking the objects and its surroundings down into distinct areas and planes, the artist shows us different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space, suggesting their three dimensional form rather than trying to create an illusion of depth.

The painting is housed in its original mid century deep profile gilt frame with an inner black window. The painting is in very good vintage condition. However, the frame edges have suffered paint and surface losses (as shown in photos), some of which have been repaired and restored. There is some widening to the corner joints.

  • Idyll

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully restful mid century oil on canvas, depicting a rural landscape with cottages.

Through the use of a muted colour palette and smooth, even brushwork, the artist has captured this quiet and peaceful scene of a rural village. In front of a row of farm buildings lies a river, edged by cobbled banks, and behind it sit high mountains. This idyllic composition is punctuated by three simple trees, whose forms add a satisfying balance to the picture.

The artist has used flat, even planes of colour that repeat throughout the picture, creating a sense of harmony and consonance.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame with an inner gilt window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing to the lower edge, as shown in the photos.

A beautifully textured coastal oil painting. The artist has used a palette knife to apply the paint, creating areas of impasto (where the paint is applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface). The artist has worked the paint dynamically, using quick and successive strokes to create this expressive and tactile piece. A soothing palette of blues, greens, whites, with orange and yellow details, imbues this painting with a thoroughly calming effect, and makes one think of lake holidays in the summertime.

A brilliantly executed large mid century portrait of a nun, executed in oil.

Displaying elements of abstraction, the artist has flattened and modified the form of the nun, reducing it down to distinct planes of contrasting colours.

  • An Encounter

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking mid century oil painting of a standing figure, painted onto canvas in a distinctly modernist style.

The artist has focussed in on a single figure – a man stands in an alley, looking straight on at us. What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.

This large and beautiful semi-abstract portrait is housed in its original mid century frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some age toning to the fabric, as shown in the photos, but this is commensurate with its age.

  • Chic

    Sold

    SOLD.

A joyful and visually striking semi-abstract mid century oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald, whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm as well as the Malmö Museum.

The painting depicts a silhouette of a stylishly dressed woman wearing tie, set against a well-coloured background.

A myriad of rich and bold shades have been used to create this well-balanced composition; and the artist has skilfully used several layers as well as blocks of contrasting tones to reveal form, texture and interest.

Broad and expressive brushstrokes that have been executed so confidently fill the canvas, adding a lovely texture and imbuing the work with liveliness. Furthermore, there is a layer of varnish that coats the surface of the painting. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal, whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. There are scattered areas of craquelure, and also small areas of paint loss to the lower right corner of the painting. However, this is in line with its vintage feel and does not detract from the overall charm of the painting.

  • Mother

    Sold

    SOLD

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and very unique gouache painting of a mother feeding her baby, painted in a distinctly modernist style.

The subject of the painting – a mother breastfeeding her child – is an intimate, personal one. Yet intriguingly, the style in which the artist had chosen to depict this scene seems to remove this element of intimacy, at least at first glance.  What we notice at first are the lines and shapes rather than the actual scene.  The artist has created a geometric effect within the picture, playing with shape, form, line, colour and pattern. Bold outlines in black demarcate each of the coloured sections, imbuing it with an architectural effect.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined slip.  The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some age toning to the inner section of the frame, and some minor scuffing to the outer edges. The painting is set behind a thick pane of glass.

The style of the painting is typically modernist in ethos, with the artist focusing on colour contrasts to create a sense of depth and space.

A mix of rustic earthy colours as well as rich tones of red, yellow and blue have been used to create this tranquil picture; and the distinct and painterly multi-directional brushstrokes adds wonderful texture and character to the work.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a distressed wood frame with a deep profile and with an inner white window. There are small areas of paint loss to inner section of the frame on the left side but this does not detract from the painting.

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very striking still life composition that has been painted onto board. The artist has used a variety of media, including oil and gouache, to render this detailed composition. The surface of the board has been painted over with a matte textured white, and on top of that the artist has used oil, gouache and watercolour to paint the objects, resulting in a very striking colour palette that really stands out from the surface, while at the same time achieving an incredible level of detail. The choice of tools and objects have created a very well balanced horizontal composition, while at the time drawing the viewer in and encouraging us to inspect all the details. The painting is housed in a greenish-blue wood slip that frames it very well, giving it a contemporary feel. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition. • Forest after Rain

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fantastic abstract landscape, painted in oil onto canvas. This expressive painting beautifully and effectively captures the ‘essence’ of a wooded landscape. The artist has chosen not to paint in realistic details, and instead chooses to convey the feel of walking through the woods on what seems to be a rainy day. He has captured the life and dynamism of the natural landscape – his quick and expressive brushstrokes create a hazy, blurry feel, capturing the effect of wind and rain on the trees, bushes and ground.

The painting is housed in a painted gilt frame, which suits it perfectly. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some paint losses around its edges, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the picture, and if anything adds to its character.

  • The Fortress

    Sold

    SOLD.

A bold and striking mid-century modernist style landscape composition of a hidden fortress, rendered in oil.

Distinct, urgent and and bold brushstrokes have been executed in an invigorating and confident manner; and the bold outlines on the trees, fortress and bridge further accentuates its three dimensional qualities.

A rich and restrained colour palette comprising varying shades of green, cream and black have been used; and the artist has wonderfully layered and paired contrasting shades to not only demonstrate a sense of depth and space, but also to add a lovely textural effect with the thick application of paint.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is overall in good vintage condition although there are very small surface paint losses at the top of the work, but the paint is very stable overall.
