    An expressive and textured mid century oil, painted onto canvas.

    This rather mysterious painting features a group of figures gathering and judging from their attire of dark robes, they appear to be monks. There is a real sense of movement within the picture, almost as if it the artist has painted a slightly blurry photograph. We get a palpable sense of the figures walking and gathering. The details of the figures such as their facial features, and the location they are at has been left out intentionally – the artist has chosen to focus on the shapes and forms of the figures, leaving only their silhouettes, juxtaposing their dark robes against the lighter white walls of the building behind them.

    Thick layers of paint have been applied with both palette knife and brush, giving the picture a wonderful depth. The artist has used a restrained palette of black, blue, brown and white, which focuses our attention on the forms and figures.

    The horizontally long shape of the artwork would make it an ideal piece to hang above a piece of furniture. Its restrained yet deep palette give it a flexibility, allowing it to suit both classic and modern interiors.

What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

    The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.

He has captured the life and dynamism of the natural landscape – his quick and expressive brushstrokes create a hazy, blurry feel, capturing the effect of wind and rain on the trees, bushes and ground.

    Soft, short and swift brushstrokes have been used to paint this charming scene where boats and yachts fill the port, with buildings depicted faintly in the distant background.

    This artwork draws on a range of modernist concepts and influences including cubism and abstraction. Blocks of contrasting colours harmonise perfectly,  giving to the various forms while creating a sense of depth and space.

    The muted palette of this painting with its soft greys and blues create a gentle and pleasant effect on our senses, while at the same time reflecting the bustling heart of Marseille.
