A contemporary painting depicting a whimsical monkey poised on a gently curving tree branch, painted in oil on panel in a naïve style by British artist Matt Rix.
The figure moves with a quiet assurance, its elongated limbs and arched tail creating a sense of rhythm and balance across the composition. Stylised leaves punctuate the scene, floating lightly around the figure and reinforcing the open, uncluttered setting.
The style is intentionally naïve and pared back, with flattened forms and simplified anatomy that echo folk art influences. The colour palette is soft and restrained: a pale blue-grey ground sets a calm tone, while deep charcoal and black define the figure, offset by a light cream face. Muted olive greens and warm brown accents add gentle contrast.
Brushstrokes are smooth and controlled with a matte finish, emphasising shape and line over texture. The overall effect is calm and gently playful, capturing a moment of quiet movement and balance.
This oil on board is housed in a black painted wood frame with an inner gilt window. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
