This large abstracted depiction of the female figure may seem simple at first glance, but as we spend the time to look at its forms, lines and colours, we soon realise its complexity. In some ways a reminder of the Nude Blue cut-outs series by Henri Matisse, the nude figure in this painting has been abstracted down to a group of shapes and colours. The artist has avoided any attempt to mimic reality and has instead used blocks of soft yet contrasting colours to create a sense of space and three dimensionality. Paint has been applied lightly and sparsely, allowing the raw canvas to show through.
Painted by in 1968, this wonderful oil is housed in a red and gilt wood frame with a linen slip, and is in excellent condition with some minor scuffs to the frame.

Areas of thick impasto create areas of texture and three dimensionality. In this very ‘open’ composition, there are no distinct forms – we cannot make out any specific detailing of the flowers and leaves. Freely brushed colours are used instead of lines and contours, portraying the overall visual effect of the floral arrangement, rather than realistic details. As our eyes move around the picture, we can also notice the fabric of the canvas showing through along the bottom section of the painting, adding to the general ethos of this as a painting rather than a realistic depiction of flowers.

An elderly lady sits on a small bench preparing food, as she waits for the pot to heat up in the large fire stove beside her.
The plethora of colours used in this work is remarkable, as well as the intricate detailing of the objects lying around which include the flower pots by the window still, the white pitcher beyond the open door, as well as the pots and pans, and a colourful rug on the floor. The door that is ajar adds a sense of openness to this painting – we feel welcomed into the space, without feeling trapped or enclosed.
It comes with a unique dark wood frame with evenly spaced divots, outlining the painting beautifully.
The canvas appears to have been previously removed from a backing or stretchers and re-laid on to board, fixed down with staples. Puncture marks from the previous framing method are visible around the outer edges of the canvas, as shown. The painting itself is in excellent condition with no paint loss, and so is the frame that it is housed in.
