    Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this mid century piece has been painted in oil onto board and depicts two seated figures on chairs.

    Large swathes of bold and vivid colour have been unabashedly applied to the canvas, and the artist has also incorporated areas of thick impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface, creating a three dimensional effect. The artist’s painterly style celebrates the medium of oil, encouraging our eyes to soak in his rich and vivid palette.

    The figures don’t have facial features, and the background also does not to allude to any particular space. This gives the painting its timeless quality, and asks us instead to appreciate the qualities of form, shape and colour.

    The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined window. There is some minor cracking to the thick impasto area (very normal due to age) but these areas are very stable. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some general wear and surface paint losses to the outermost edges of the frame, but this certainly does not detract from its overall appeal.

  • The Barge

    A very large mid century oil painting on canvas depicting a narrow boat and a rowing boat on a river in winter.

    There is a beautiful quietness to this scene – it captures the essence of  a cold, crisp winter morning.  The water is perfectly still, and quite possibly icy. We see the crisp reflection of the blue rowing boat in the water. Soft, white snow covers the banks of the river. A black barge is docked on the left side, with a blue rowing boat sitting quietly beside it, its tether hidden by the water.

    The artist has been brave in his painting approach and has not shied away from painting a large proportion of the composition (i.e. the river) in a dark colour. But this does not depress the mood of the painting. Rather, it skilfully directs our eyes’ journey. We are initially drawn to the dark river, where the paint is smooth and untextured, but our eyes are then directed up the river and towards the upper half of the picture, where we see the snow and sky. This area of the painting has been painted very differently – with areas of textured impasto and more movement (in contrast to the very still, smooth river). These differing painting techniques give it its unique character, and add depth and interest to the painting.

    The painting is housed in a wide profile frame that complements it perfectly. As shown in the photos, here are two small punctures to the left corner (where the black barge is) but this is not noticeable unless closely inspected.  There is a small loss to the middle section of the upper half (also shown in close up photo) but again this is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The colour palette of the painting hides these imperfections well. Please note that in close up of the river, there is some photographic glare due to dark palette.     A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

    Painted in both gouache and watercolour onto paper, it is framed within a card mount and a solid oak wood frame. The card mount has some slight age toning and the frame has some minor scuffs typical for its age. The painting is in good vintage condition and sits behind glass, as shown.

    An expressive and textured mid century oil, painted onto canvas.

    This rather mysterious painting features a group of figures gathering and judging from their attire of dark robes, they appear to be monks. There is a real sense of movement within the picture, almost as if it the artist has painted a slightly blurry photograph. We get a palpable sense of the figures walking and gathering. The details of the figures such as their facial features, and the location they are at has been left out intentionally – the artist has chosen to focus on the shapes and forms of the figures, leaving only their silhouettes, juxtaposing their dark robes against the lighter white walls of the building behind them.

    Thick layers of paint have been applied with both palette knife and brush, giving the picture a wonderful depth. The artist has used a restrained palette of black, blue, brown and white, which focuses our attention on the forms and figures.

    The horizontally long shape of the artwork would make it an ideal piece to hang above a piece of furniture. Its restrained yet deep palette give it a flexibility, allowing it to suit both classic and modern interiors.

    The artist has focussed in on a single figure – a man stands in an alley, looking straight on at us. What would normally be quite confronting is softened and made friendly – the man stands casually with his hands in his pockets. Although his expression is undiscernible, we get a sense that this is a friendly and familiar encounter, someone we know, a father, a grandfather, an uncle.

    The figure is painted against an abstract background, but we can just about make out buildings on either side. There seems to be a luminosity and reflection in the way the artist has painted the background, perhaps a suggestion that it has just rained.

    A joyful and visually striking semi-abstract mid century oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald, whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm as well as the Malmö Museum.

    The painting depicts a silhouette of a stylishly dressed woman wearing tie, set against a well-coloured background.

    A myriad of rich and bold shades have been used to create this well-balanced composition; and the artist has skilfully used several layers as well as blocks of contrasting tones to reveal form, texture and interest.

    Broad and expressive brushstrokes that have been executed so confidently fill the canvas, adding a lovely texture and imbuing the work with liveliness. Furthermore, there is a layer of varnish that coats the surface of the painting. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal, whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

    This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. There are scattered areas of craquelure, and also small areas of paint loss to the lower right corner of the painting. However, this is in line with its vintage feel and does not detract from the overall charm of the painting.

    Do note that some glare is evident in the photograph due to the varnish on the picture.

    A large and very unique gouache painting of a mother feeding her baby, painted in a distinctly modernist style.

    The subject of the painting – a mother breastfeeding her child – is an intimate, personal one. Yet intriguingly, the style in which the artist had chosen to depict this scene seems to remove this element of intimacy, at least at first glance.  What we notice at first are the lines and shapes rather than the actual scene.  The artist has created a geometric effect within the picture, playing with shape, form, line, colour and pattern. Bold outlines in black demarcate each of the coloured sections, imbuing it with an architectural effect.

    The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined slip.  The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some age toning to the inner section of the frame, and some minor scuffing to the outer edges. The painting is set behind a thick pane of glass.
