    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and calming view of Stadsgården – the wharf on the shore of the Baltic Sea in Stockholm, Sweden. The artist has painted in an expressive manner – swift yet delicate strokes fill the canvas, creating this panoramic harbour scene. On the left side of the painting we can just see side wall and top edge of a balcony, where we can picture ourselves (or the artist) standing and looking out at the beautiful view before us.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame, which is a robust light wood frame with a wide profile and visible grain. There is a also a green edging to the frame (as shown), which adds a lovely effect. The painting has some overall scattered craquelure, typical for a painting of this age.

  • Coastal Houses

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming and scenic mid century oil painting presenting a view of houses lined by a coastal front. As evening sets, hues of pink fill the sky and the shimmering blue water is beaming with serenity.

Working with a modernist ethos in mind, the artist has intentionally chosen not to focus on realistic details, and instead explores the use of colours, brushstrokes and form to create a sense of depth and space.

Lively colours and expressive multi-directional brushstrokes have been used extensively in this work, producing distinct forms and breathing life into this overall striking composition.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a rustic wood frame with an inner linen lining . There are some watermarks on the frame as shown in the images but does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • The Bond

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century gouache and watercolour figure composition, painted in 1955.

A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

Painted in both gouache and watercolour onto paper, it is framed within a card mount and a solid oak wood frame. The card mount has some slight age toning and the frame has some minor scuffs typical for its age. The painting is in good vintage condition and sits behind glass, as shown.

  • En Route

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A tranquil and wonderfully executed mid 20th century landscape street scene composition, rendered in oil in a semi-abstracted manner.

Although pictorial details have been blurred, we can see 2 figures in black and a figure in white on a walkway heading towards a monumental building in the background.

This piece radiates calmness and serenity – brought forth through the use of wonderful subtle and muted pastel tones that transition from one shade to the next so seamlessly and that gives the painting its compositional depth; as well as through the use of gentle and lightly textured brushstrokes.

This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in an elegant light cream wood and linen frame, and there is minor yellowing to the corners of the inner frame.

  • Sicily

    Sold

    SOLD.

A picturesque and well balanced landscape view of the pearl of the Mediterranean, Taormina in Sicily.  The artist has beautifully captured the archetypal Mediterranean atmosphere, with a palm tree standing tall to the left, the local floral and fauna stretching across the canvas, and the view of the blue sea into the distance. The pastel colour palette creates a very calming atmosphere within the picture, enhanced by the small and soft impressionist brushstrokes which are reminiscent of works by the pointillist artist Georges Seurat.

The painting is housed in a distressed cream and gilt frame which suits it perfectly, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Coast

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking mid century abstract oil, painted on to canvas.

Although largely abstract in style, we are still able to discern that the artist is depicting a landscape. We are able to make out a tree to the left most edge of the composition, as well as a house that sits behind it. Larges swathes of deep and saturated colour line the bottom half of the canvas, making up the foreground of the picture. Beyond that, different shades of blue indicate the sea and then the sky. The artist has used contrasting colours and texture to create a sense of depth and space.

This large oil is housed in a very complementary rustic frame, which suits it wonderfully. This painting would fit well in both classic and contemporary interiors. Its large size and expressive use of colour make it a real statement piece. The painting and frame are in good vintage condition. There are some scattered areas of craquelure, but the paint layer is stable overall.

  • Abstract Palette

    Sold

    SOLD.

A skilfully executed mid century abstract painted in oil onto board. It features a combination of broad brushwork and fluid paint applied both thinly and thickly, creating differing textures and overlays.

Despite its abstract nature, the colour palette and composition could allude to the natural landscape of a coastal scene. The top section of the painting, with its blues and whites, could represent the sea, and the sandy tones of brown, beige, white and black could also be an abstraction of the shoreline. Although we will never know the artist’s source of inspiration or whether or not he intended to represent anything tangible, it is a wonderful process of imagination and freedom to be able to draw our own conclusions and visualise our own personal connections to a particular composition.

This mid century oil is reminiscent of the abstract expressionist works by the artist William de Kooning, whose painting style came to be known as ‘action panting’.

It is housed in a light wood frame, which complements it perfectly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Abstract Pots

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A large, mid century oil on canvas, painted in a modernist style.

Depicted in a semi-abstract manner, a pair of potted plants sit by what appears to be window. The composition shows the artist’s interest in conveying the physicality of objects and surrounding space, and portrays cubist influences. If we focus our attention on the pots, we notice that they have been fragmented, flattened and abstracted, reduced down to geometric outlines. By breaking the objects and its surroundings down into distinct areas and planes, the artist shows us different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space, suggesting their three dimensional form rather than trying to create an illusion of depth.

The painting is housed in its original mid century deep profile gilt frame with an inner black window. The painting is in very good vintage condition. However, the frame edges have suffered paint and surface losses (as shown in photos), some of which have been repaired and restored. There is some widening to the corner joints.

The expressive brushwork adds an element of abstraction to the picture as well.

This emotive landscape is framed in a robust mid century gilt frame with visible wood grain and a unique green border which sets the painting off beautifully. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Green Trees

    Sold

    SOLD.

An abstracted landscape of trees, painted in oil onto board. The artist has used a rich and earthy palette of greens, blacks and browns to create this semi-abstract painting. He has focused on form, shapes, patterns and lines, and consciously ignored the reality of a tree filled landscape. Leaves, branches and trunks have been reduced to flat planes of coloured shapes and bold lines. The visible brushstrokes in a matte finish give this painting its distinct mid century modern style, and would stand out in any interior.

The painting is housed in a simple dark brown wood frame. There are some minor surface marks to both frame and painting, but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece, and if anything add to its charm.

  • Idyll

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully restful mid century oil on canvas, depicting a rural landscape with cottages.

Through the use of a muted colour palette and smooth, even brushwork, the artist has captured this quiet and peaceful scene of a rural village. In front of a row of farm buildings lies a river, edged by cobbled banks, and behind it sit high mountains. This idyllic composition is punctuated by three simple trees, whose forms add a satisfying balance to the picture.

The artist has used flat, even planes of colour that repeat throughout the picture, creating a sense of harmony and consonance.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame with an inner gilt window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing to the lower edge, as shown in the photos.

  • Lady in a Black Scarf

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century modernist portrait of a lady in a black headscarf, painted onto board in 1957.

A restrained yet immensely well balanced colour palette has been used, drawing attention to the form of the subject.  Beautifully expressive brushstrokes sweep in and around the figure in pastel colours, creating a translucent, diaphanous effect. The black headscarf that wraps around the figure’s head acts as a focal point and draws the eye to the figure’s face first. Our attention is then drawn downwards  through the use of converging downward pointing brushwork in blue.

The figure’s stern expression adds character and interest to the piece, and would make for a brilliant statement piece in any interior. The light, soothing colour palette and wood frame would blend in very well in both classic and modern interiors.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame with an inner white border. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The corner joints of the frame have widened slightly but are stable and do no detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Meadow Houses

    Sold

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A pleasant and uplifting mid 20th century landscape composition, executed in oil.

Painted in a semi abstract manner through the use of swift and painterly brushstrokes, the artist has skilfully simplified this composition of houses in a meadow down to blocks of contrasting colours.

Using an array of lively shades including yellow, blue and green, the artist displays an excellent understanding of colour theory as layers and pairs of contrasting tones sit beside and on top of one another, blending together effortlessly and harmoniously whilst creating a lovely textural effect.

This composition is highly well-balanced, with the area of the sky and the land having equal visual weight, as the houses gather in the middle of the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a simple light blue frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition overall. There is some very minor craquelure (fine cracks in the paint) present,  commensurate with its age, but the surface of the paint is stable. There is a thin string that wraps around the edge of the canvas (as seen in photos).

  • Solitude

    Sold

    SOLD.

A calm, quiet and serene landscape painted in oil, dated 1960. It is early morning on a frosty morning, and rays of warmth have only just started to make their first appearance in the sky.  Three tall trees form the focus of the composition, drawing first attention. Traces of frost that have not yet been melted by the sun remain on the ground, but probably not for long. Forming a large proportion of this picture is the sky, where colours of blue, white and orange have been blended skilfully to capture the beginnings of morning light. We know this view that the artist has captured is only fleeting, as it won’t be long before the rising sun changes the light and landscape altogether.

The painting is housed in a gorgeous greyish-green frame and a fabric lined inner border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Passage

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but striking mid century abstract in oil, painted onto canvas.

Although largely abstract in composition, we can just about discern a series of buildings, with tall trees dotted in and around them. To the lower left there appears to be a bridge or an aqueduct, where a small area of blue paint perhaps indicates the water running below it. The colour palette of this painting is largely restrained, with deep blues, greys and green taking centre stage. Vertical, downward, and distinct brushstrokes give this painting its modernist feel, and alternating light and dark tones create a sense of depth and space.

The painting is housed in its original mid century wood frame, with an inner hessian border. There are small areas of paint losses to the right edge and lower edge of the painting, but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. The frame is in good vintage condition.

  • The Wagon

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A playful and vibrant scene of 2 figures with a donkey wagon, painted in a fauvist style. The artist has used an array of non-naturalistic colours in loose sections, and has simplified the subjects such that it leans towards abstraction. He has also applied the theory of complementary colours in this painting, where pairs of colours that are opposite each other on a colour wheel are used side-by-side in the painting,  making each other look brighter as a result. There is also a rejection of traditional three-dimensional space, as the artist has instead used flat areas of patches of colour to create a sense of pictorial space, drawing our attention to his use of bright emotive colours, simple shapes and painterly mark-making. We notice also that the artist has intentionally left areas of the canvas uncoloured and showing through.

The painting is housed in its original mid century dark wood frame with an inner dark gilt border. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Winter Blues

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but impactful modernist style winter landscape, executed in oil on board.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artwork depicts a panoramic snow-covered landscape street scene featuring a row of houses and barren trees.

The artist has used the expressive qualities of colour and brushstroke to convey visual calm as well as the coldness of winter.

A restrained palette of blue, white and black have been used, and this limitation of colours enables us to strengthen our focus on the various subject matter in the painting as our eyes progress through.

Furthermore, the long and painterly sweeping brushstrokes add a wonderful textural feel, as well as create a sense of depth in the painting.

This oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century hessian frame with an inner gilt window, and it complements the painting very well. There are some very minor marks on the frame as shown in the images.

  • Down by the Water

    Sold

    SOLD.

A lovely bright riverscape view, painted in oil in 1957. The artist has used distinct, expressive brushstrokes throughout, giving us the sense that this was painted ‘en plein air’ (the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view). The artist has incorporated natural light, colour, and movement into this work, capturing the spirit of the river as it flows through the city. A set of steps can be seen to the right, encouraging us to imagine ourselves having just walked down, taking respite from the hustle and bustle of the busy city above.

The painting is housed in a light grey frame, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Breakfast Still Life

    Sold

    SOLD

An expressive and richly textured still life composition, executed in oil in 1952.

The artwork presents a coffee boiler, a pitcher and 3 fruits placed atop a brown table, set against a blue and brown background.

A range of vibrant colours including orange, brown and blue have been used, invigorating the work with liveliness.

This textured painting is filled with areas of impasto, where the paint has been applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface, evoking tactility and a wonderful energetic feel to the painting.

This oil on board is housed in a deep profiled gilt frame. There are some areas of minor craquelure (fine cracks in the paint) commensurate with its age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring.

  • By the River

    Sold

    SOLD

A Swedish mid century riverscape scene, painted in oil on 1947. The painting is compositionally very well balanced and has a lovely depth to it, which the artist has created through capturing several elements of the landscape in layers. Branches and leaves of a tree peek in from the left, directing our eyes towards the river water, with its swirling ripples. Our eyes are then directed upwards by the tall tree that is just off centre, which then leads us to the row of colourful buildings that sit along the river edge. The light blue of the sky is reflected in the windows of the buildings, and again in the ripples of the water, creating a nice flow and harmony within the painting. There are several details that slowly reveal themselves as our eyes rest on the picture, making it a very satisfying picture to look at.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which has a red border with gilt tints, and and inner beige window. There are some marks to the lower section of the frame, but otherwise the painting is in good vintage condition with no losses.
