  • Red Thoughts

    Red Thoughts

    Sold

    SOLD.

An engaging and powerful abstract composition by British contemporary artist Lloyd Durling, painted in oil onto linen board. Signed, titled and dated 2024 on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

This oil on linen board is housed in a complementary walnut stained oak frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

A quiet and introspective mid-century modernist figurative painting, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The composition presents two female figures in patterned garments standing before a village house. When I Dream, No One is Home

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating and enigmatic urban dreamscape painted in a surrealist style, executed in oil onto board and dated 2007.

The painting unfolds where rows of identical arched windows form undulating red facades that seem to stretch endlessly under a restless sky. A lone man in a tan suit stands solemnly in the lower foreground, his pallid expression contrasting against the architectural rhythm that engulfs him. A towering streetlamp looms large, nearly intrusive, disrupting the visual symmetry and deepening the sense of alienation.

The style leans toward Surrealism, with echoes of de Chirico in its spatial disquiet and uncanny atmosphere. The artist uses bold outlines and flat planes of colour to render the buildings, giving them a graphic, almost theatrical quality. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, burnt siennas, ochres, and stark whites, under a blue sky dotted with stylised clouds.

Brushstrokes are precise and deliberate, creating smooth surfaces and crisp contours, particularly in the architecture and sky. The textures of the suit and hair of the figure are more softly layered, offering subtle contrast. The overall effect is dreamlike and contemplative.

The artist has used broad, confident brushstrokes that are slightly textured, giving the painting a light tactile quality. The layering of colours and forms suggests depth, while the curvilinear lines guide the eye through the composition in a rhythmic, almost dance-like manner.

This oil on board is housed in a very unique linen-lined frame with decorative moulding. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Harbour Light

    Harbour Light

    Sold

    SOLD

A charming mid-century modernist coastal painting that captures a serene dockside scene bathed in soft daylight, executed in oil onto board and dated 1956.

Fishing boats are moored alongside a working pier, flanked by crates, nets, and a striking red navigation beacon at centre. The artist has used a flattened perspective and simplified forms to convey the geometry of the harbour while preserving its quiet charm.

Rendered in a harmonious palette of green, powder blue, yellow, and muted crimson, the composition is infused with a breezy, contemplative atmosphere. The brushwork is energetic yet controlled  – broad, confident strokes describe boats and buildings, while finer, expressive lines evoke movement in the water and grass. The interplay of structure and spontaneity gives the painting both architectural weight and lyrical rhythm.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary champagne wood frame with an inner linen border. The painting has scattered areas of craquelure as shown, and a small area of paint loss to the upper edge (also shown in close ups). The frame is in good vintage condition.

    Size:  39.5 x 66 cm (including frame)

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.

  • Misty Shoreline

    SOLD

A mid-century modernist serene coastal landscape captures the quiet, contemplative mood of a misty shoreline, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition unfolds in horizontal bands, with earthy greens and orange marking grassy dunes in the foreground, gently transitioning into muted lavender and sandy tones along a rugged path that leads the eye toward a hazy seascape. A pale sky hangs over the scene, dissolving almost seamlessly into the ocean beyond, evoking a sense of distance and solitude.

Painted with confident, textural brushstrokes, the work displays the hallmarks of mid-century plein air expression. The artist’s technique is loose yet purposeful, blending areas of texture and thin washes to render light and atmosphere with immediacy. The gentle palette reinforces the painting’s quiet mood, while the bold greens and slate greys lend grounding contrast.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary linen lined wood frame with an inner gilt border.  Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
