Miniature paintings are often overlooked treasures. Their small size means they can fit into an array of small spaces, adding interest to nooks and crannies. They can be displayed on a bookshelf or kitchen shelf, either standing on a mini easel or leant against other objects/books. If added to a group display, these small pieces act as a wonderful contrast to bigger pieces, and can add ‘punctuation’ to the group hang.

A stunning and well-executed oil painting depicting a scene outside Theatre Mogador in Paris.

The show is about to begin, and an audience can be seen streaming through the open doors leading in to the theatre.

In true Parisian fashion, the crowd is stylishly dressed with flair and sartorial splendour.

This bright expressionist oil depicting a harbour scene is wonderfully dynamic. Quick brushstrokes, heavy impasto and a vibrant colour palette lend themselves well to capturing the hustle and bustle of the busy dock at daytime. Surrounding the picture stand tall warehouses that have been built to serve the harbour, smoke bellowing from their chimneys. In the foreground merchants trading their goods scurry along. A white sailing ship with its tall mast is docked in the middle of the picture – its sailor just about to to disembark down the ladder.

This original oil is by Finish/Swedish artist Kurt Erik Heinonen was born in 1915 and died in 1983. This piece is typical in style and subject for Heinonen, who often used a palette knife with strong clear colouring, mainly painting the west coast region of Sweden with views of fishing harbours with boats.

The painting is housed in a gorgeous distressed frame wood and cream frame, showing off its wood grain beautifully.

A really unique piece showing off a rich array of warm colours, depicting figures within a vibrant Latin American village. The artist has contrasted areas of small blocks of colour against larger swathes of more expressionistic brushstrokes. These different strokes moving in different directions imbue the painting with a liveliness and playfulness that you don’t often find in paintings. Our eyes are treated to a feast, with lots of detailing to take in and enjoy. We love the fact that the artist has included the little dog passing by, emphasising the fact that this is an everyday scene, part of the hustle and bustle of village life. After noticing the scene that is taking place in the foreground, our eyes are then drawn further into the background where we begin to take in the surrounding landscape, including the village houses and mountains beyond.

This wonderful oil is is complemented by a very complementary double frame, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Autumn Village | Village de Moselle

    Sold

    SOLD

This artwork is so unique as it is painted on not one, but two sides!

On one front, a cheerful autumnal landscape scene that is painted in a fauvist manner is presented. One is captivated by the striking use of strong vivid colours, and the use of bold and distinctive brushwork that certainly enhances the work’s emotional power.

On the other reverse, a stunning 1950s modernist painting of a French Village is presented. Using a wonderfully unique colour palette, it instills the pictured French village with so much life and character. The artist has chosen not to paint any figures in this picture, but the buildings have been painted in such an expressive, vibrant and textured manner that they almost double as people – the bold outlines and different coloured facades give each structure its own personality. Even the fencing in the forefront has been given close attention by the artist. The bold and gestural brushstrokes in the forefront of the painting contrast elegantly with the lighter and more muted palette of the sky.

There is so much to look at and notice in the entirety of this artwork – a delightful array of colours, textures and structures on both sides.

This 1950s oil on board is in good vintage condition for its age, and is well presented in wooden frame. The front is exposed, and the back has a UV-protected glass cover – and you can choose to display either side.

  • The Holiday

    SOLD

This piece is most certainly one of our favourites. Delicately painted in creamy pastel tones, this textured piece is a holiday on canvas. Capturing a quiet back street in Continental Europe, the loose and painterly handling of the artist’s brush echoes the shifting colours and patterns of French Impressionism. A perfect mnemonic for a previous European vacation, or better still, a prompt to make the journey once again.
