  • Autumn Hare

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A really unique semi-abstract oil painting of a hare in an autumnal landscape. One could be forgiven for missing the hare on first glance, as it almost blends into the grassy landscape. The artist has managed to convey the reality of catching a fleeting sight of a hare leaping through the grassy meadow – one blink and you’ll miss the little creature. Expressive brushstrokes in earthy colours of orange, rusty browns and reds, and greys and greens form the majority of the picture, with the stunningly painted hare starkly in the middle – its white ears and tail stand out from the background, drawing our attention lest we miss it.

The painting is housed in an simple wood frame, which suits it wonderfully. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame appears to have had some restoration work done to upper left and lower left corners, as shown in the photos.

Miniature paintings are often overlooked treasures. Their small size means they can fit into an array of small spaces, adding interest to nooks and crannies. They can be displayed on a bookshelf or kitchen shelf, either standing on a mini easel or leant against other objects/books. If added to a group display, these small pieces act as a wonderful contrast to bigger pieces, and can add ‘punctuation’ to the group hang.

  • Two for Joy

    Sold

    SOLD.

Painted in 1974, this joyful oil painting depicts two magpies perched within a luscious green tree. The artist has combined textured layers of paint and a playful colour palette to create this delightful painting. Swirls of pastel blue, orange and brown contrast beautifully with the much quicker and heavier dabs of green and yellow of the leaves on the tree.  As the well known nursery rhyme goes, sighting two magpies signifies the arrival of joy and good luck.

This painting is housed within a vintage style box frame that has been painted black. The frame has minor scuffs and the painting is in excellent vintage condition.

For those that may no longer remember, here’s the famous rhyme about magpies:

    “One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret,
    Never to be told,
    Eight for a wish,
    Nine for a kiss
    Ten for a bird
    You must not miss.”

  • The Catch

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A very large and vibrant oil painting on board with a wonderful array of details to notice. The painting almost ‘unfolds’ before  us as we look at it, with lots of individual areas of detailing becoming apparent as we let our eyes wander across the picture. At first glance we notice the main scene taking place in the foreground, where a group of fishermen surround their catch of the day. Then we start to notice the other activities taking place, such as the woman spinning yarn on the right, as well as the features of the cityscape beyond. Then, almost as if to surprise us, little animals along the lower border soon reveal themselves to us – the rabbit, frog, dog with bird in mouth, and duck. Even as the picture recedes, the artist has taken great care to paint in all the details, including the cranes and factories in the far distance.

This wonderful painting with so much to offer measures 80.9 x 48.1cm. There are some areas of paint losses to the bottom of the painting but this would be easily covered by a frame.

    Size: 80.9 x 48.1cm

  • The Village

With its sandy desert tones and visually pleasing composition, this small painting has a wonderful mellowness to it.  This scene of one of the White Villages in Spain shows off the region’s old white lime walls and brown tiled roofs. In this region the climate is known to be mild, and the tones and hues used in this painting capture that mildness of this quiet village perfectly. To add interest, the artist has included a donkey cart and driver strolling casually along, about to make their way back into the village after a long day’s work.

The artist has used the impasto technique fervently, applying the paint thickly to the canvas so that it stands proud and creates a three-dimensional effect. Swirls of coloured paint lend a warm glow to this intimate night time scene.

A delicate oil on canvas depicting an eagle soaring in the sky, gliding through wheat fields with such poise.

This composition is highly well-balanced, with the area of the sky and the land having equal visual weight.

Although this bird of prey possesses impressive strength, and is known as one of the most powerful birds on the planet, the artist has chosen to capture its soft side – as there is so much lightness and grace is this composition. The use of fine and smooth brushstrokes imbue the work with a feel of gentleness; and the warm pastel colour palette create feelings of earthiness and calmness.

The artwork comes with a light wood frame with a gilt inner window, which pairs extremely well with the painting, enhancing it further. Painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Swans

    Sold

A wonderful study of 2 white swans grazing in a lush garden, set against a historical building.

On this fine morning in Spring, a graceful pair of swans have just emerged from the nearby lake, and have come to the lawn to nibble on grass. With no one else in sight, they are roaming freely in the area, with not a worry in the world.

The artist has selected a beautiful naturalistic and earthy colour palette in this work; and has creatively dabbed a mix of clay, beige and sand colours to render the rough and granular nature of stone on the historical building.

He has also painted the grass in a similar fashion – using different shades of green and some hints of beige to highlight its dense appearance.

This mid 20th century painting is an oil on canvas, and is signed on the lower right.

It is complemented by its gilt frame, and measures 73.5 x 62.5 cm (including frame)

Why imitate reality when you can imagine a new one?

Here the most powerful resources of the artist – creativity, imagination and reinvention – have been harnessed. Such a delicate combination has been achieved: the celebration of the common things of everyday life without imitation. Instead, we have ‘visual music’, composed using the formal artistic elements of pattern, harmony, colour, and rhythm.

We have abstract planes of strong colour, intensified by chromatic contrasts which cause each saturated hue to reverberate in the eye. This ‘no depth’ style might seem simple to achieve, but when examined further, the combination of different elements in fact take great skill. The objects have been deliberately flattened to bring them parallel to the picture surface, deployed on a table top that has been similarly brought up and forward by 90 degrees to align them with the canvas plane. These familiar objects acquire a new life of their own within the composed world of the painting, bounded by the rectangular surface itself and their own pictorial structure of shape and colour.

This meticulous and vivacious oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. The black complementary frame as seen in the photos is included with the painting.

    Size: 23 x 23cm (including frame)

  • Summer Pasture

    Sold

A small, stunning and very well balanced oil on board. We see cows resting under a tree in pasture, keeping themselves cool and shaded from the summer heat. The mix of contrasting green tones against the blue sky add depth to the picture. The two large trees are punctuated by the string of resting cows on the left, adding a wonderful sense of balance and harmony to the picture. The combination of the cows in repose, the rich green brushwork and the blue skies really lend a sense of tranquillity and calm to this small but confident picture.
