  • Chinoiserie

    Sold

A beautiful and serene still life that captured our hearts upon first sight.

Presented atop a mahogany wooden table is an arrangement of flowers in a vase, a sugar pot, and and 2 European vintage ceramic figurines of a boy and girl with animals around them.

What is so captivating about this work is that it has elements of both East and West – the artist has painted a dutch Delft blue and white chinoiserie porcelain vase that has some yellow overtones that further enhances its beauty.

The objects are set against a beautifully painted backdrop that picks up the colours of the flowers and the ornaments around it.

Very fine and soft brushstrokes have been used to create a smooth and delicate effect to the work, and there is great fluency from one subject to the next.

The artist has also skillfully captured the reflections of the objects cast against the wood grains of the table top.

Housed in its original frame, this is one of our larger artworks, and measures 88 x 69cm including the frame.

  • The Port

This bright expressionist oil depicting a harbour scene is wonderfully dynamic. Quick brushstrokes, heavy impasto and a vibrant colour palette lend themselves well to capturing the hustle and bustle of the busy dock at daytime. Surrounding the picture stand tall warehouses that have been built to serve the harbour, smoke bellowing from their chimneys. In the foreground merchants trading their goods scurry along. A white sailing ship with its tall mast is docked in the middle of the picture – its sailor just about to to disembark down the ladder.

This original oil is by Finish/Swedish artist Kurt Erik Heinonen was born in 1915 and died in 1983. This piece is typical in style and subject for Heinonen, who often used a palette knife with strong clear colouring, mainly painting the west coast region of Sweden with views of fishing harbours with boats.

The painting is housed in a gorgeous distressed frame wood and cream frame, showing off its wood grain beautifully.

  • Lavender Fields

    Sold

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A enchanting painting of a picturesque scene  in Provence of lavender fields with mountains in the background. Spring has arrived, and one can almost smell the scent of lavender permeating the air, as the vibrant purple crops are ready for harvest. Four farmers are depicting out in the fields, enjoying their day while they harvest the crops. The buds have formed on the plant, but the flowers have yet to burst into full bloom – as it is the best time to be harvested.

The painting comes in lovely pastel tones, and the artist has managed to capture the delicate nature of flowers so effortlessly through the use of fine, short brushstrokes.

This is a mixed media on paper, and the vintage gilded frame with red velvet lining that comes with the artwork adds so much character to it. The painting is glazed (there is a layer of glass between the frame and artwork).

  • Verdant

    Sold

Free shipping to Europe, UK and Singapore.

This oil on stretched canvas is excellently executed – blocks of contrasting green in both saturated and pastel shades give it so much life and movement. The brushwork is beautiful and textured, and the composition is very well balanced. The blocks of colour give it a structured feel, but the expressive brushwork imbue it with freedom and movement. The artist has executed the painting with flat planes of colour while still maintaining perspective within the picture – just stunning!

The painting comes in its original painted wooden frame and suits the painting perfectly. There are minor scuffs to the frame, but this is in line with its age and vintage charm.

    Size: 40 x 52cm (including frame)

  • Percolate

    Sold

Free shipping to Europe, UK and Singapore.

Through its exploration of lines and generating and defining of shapes such as the curve, circles, angles and arabesque, this painting picks up on the style and ideas of the Movement paintings of British St Ives School artist Sir Terry Frost, who explored concepts around creating rhythm, counterpoint, interruption and repetition.

A wonderful visual vocabulary of bright primary colours, shapes, and movement transforms what would normally just be a pair of espresso cups and a percolator, and has given them a life of their own.

The magic in this is that the artist has taken ordinary objects, and has looked at them in a way that has removed all preconceived notions of visual experience in order to open up the possibility of recreating and reimagining that defies reality. There is an openness to serious play with colour and shape. This painting is simple and surprisingly subtle, but very satisfying to look at, and to enjoy.

This lovely oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. The complementary frame as seen in the photos is included with the painting.

    Size: 35 x 30cm (including frame)

  • Off to Market

    Sold

Free shipping to Europe, UK and Singapore.

A really unique piece showing off a rich array of warm colours, depicting figures within a vibrant Latin American village. The artist has contrasted areas of small blocks of colour against larger swathes of more expressionistic brushstrokes. These different strokes moving in different directions imbue the painting with a liveliness and playfulness that you don’t often find in paintings. Our eyes are treated to a feast, with lots of detailing to take in and enjoy. We love the fact that the artist has included the little dog passing by, emphasising the fact that this is an everyday scene, part of the hustle and bustle of village life. After noticing the scene that is taking place in the foreground, our eyes are then drawn further into the background where we begin to take in the surrounding landscape, including the village houses and mountains beyond.

This wonderful oil is is complemented by a very complementary double frame, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

Why imitate reality when you can imagine a new one?

Here the most powerful resources of the artist – creativity, imagination and reinvention – have been harnessed. Such a delicate combination has been achieved: the celebration of the common things of everyday life without imitation. Instead, we have ‘visual music’, composed using the formal artistic elements of pattern, harmony, colour, and rhythm.

We might have in front of us a vase of flowers, a pair of pears, a couple of variegated pebbles and a jug of cherries. But there is more than meets the eye. We have abstract planes of strong colour, intensified by chromatic contrasts which cause each saturated hue to reverberate in the eye. Clear, clean, decorative shapes, schematically flattened into pure geometries: disc and circle, star, scallop-edged roundel, arch and curve, stripes and lines, the intensity of emerald green and ultramarine against pastels and white.

This ‘no depth’ style might seem simple to achieve, but when examined further, the combination of different elements in fact take great skill. The objects have been deliberately flattened to bring them parallel to the picture surface, deployed on a table top that has been similarly brought up and forward by 90 degrees to align them with the canvas plane. These familiar objects acquire a new life of their own within the composed world of the painting, bounded by the rectangular surface itself and their own pictorial structure of shape and colour.

Pebbles, pears, cherries and flowers, yes. But more a world of imagination than actual fact.

This meticulous and vivacious oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. The white complementary frame as seen in the photos is included with the painting.

  • Fleur Blanche

    Sold

Free shipping to Europe, UK and Singapore.

Imagine a friend has brought you a bunch of flowers and you’ve put them in a jug displayed on your dining room table. You’re having breakfast at your table the next morning, admiring the flowers. You observe the patterns, colours, edges and lines of the little flowers. You begin to notice the natural rhythm within this visual picture – the different heights and shapes of the flowers and leaves and their stems form a sweet harmonious composition.

It is this very composition that the artist of this painting has explored. The artist has observed the formal elements of the jug of flowers, i.e. shape, line, form and colour, and has enhanced them by deliberately flattening and bringing them parallel to the picture surface, deployed on a table top that has been similarly brought up and forward by 90 degrees to align them with the canvas plane.

Here we have art that accepts life’s visual and tactile pleasures, but represents them using the resources of the painter – colour and form, visual rhythm and rhyme.

  • Autumn Village | Village de Moselle

    Sold

    SOLD

This artwork is so unique as it is painted on not one, but two sides!

On one front, a cheerful autumnal landscape scene that is painted in a fauvist manner is presented. One is captivated by the striking use of strong vivid colours, and the use of bold and distinctive brushwork that certainly enhances the work’s emotional power.

On the other reverse, a stunning 1950s modernist painting of a French Village is presented. Using a wonderfully unique colour palette, it instills the pictured French village with so much life and character. The artist has chosen not to paint any figures in this picture, but the buildings have been painted in such an expressive, vibrant and textured manner that they almost double as people – the bold outlines and different coloured facades give each structure its own personality. Even the fencing in the forefront has been given close attention by the artist. The bold and gestural brushstrokes in the forefront of the painting contrast elegantly with the lighter and more muted palette of the sky.

There is so much to look at and notice in the entirety of this artwork – a delightful array of colours, textures and structures on both sides.

This 1950s oil on board is in good vintage condition for its age, and is well presented in wooden frame. The front is exposed, and the back has a UV-protected glass cover – and you can choose to display either side.

  • The Clan

    Sold

    ‘-SOLD-

This quotidien scene of simple objects is arranged as a still life of copper, bronze and silver vessels. There is no frippery to this picture, no gesture overplayed.

Yet the physical solidarity and surety of the objects contrast starkly with the negative space and void beyond – the table and background seem to merge into an abstract hollow. This invites us to open our minds to wider meanings, and offers us the chance to think freely and more metaphorically.

As opposed to just static receptacles, we could imagine this grouping as a family – perhaps as three siblings in a row. The two elder siblings perched on either end, standing tall and playing by the rules, while the youngest sibling in the middle, creative and seeking attention, playfully falls over, breaking the formal composition of the picture. Yet somehow the trio remain harmonious despite the disruption.

As objects, they share similarities in their matter and purpose, but are still able to hold their own. Much like siblings, they are bonded by connections and similarities, but remain unique individuals with idiosyncratic characteristics worth discovering.

  • Summer Skies

    Sold

    ‘-SOLD-

Despite its small size, this painting does not seem to be at all constrained by its borders. An expansive and panoramic view beckons us, and tiny details within the pastoral landscape invite us in to take a closer look. The artist has used swift and sweeping strokes of colour to paint the atmospheric sky, while maintaining a more restrained hand when painting the finer details of the tree-lined fields and sheep below.

This beautiful composition is imbued with a sense of peace and tranquillity, while still conveying a sense of the passing of time. Its cool palette, well laid out composition and compact size make it a stunning yet practical addition to both classic and modern interiors.
