Searching for Flowers

A wonderfully expressive little abstract painting by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, inspired by the first signs of spring and the simple pleasures of discovering nature.

For Frances, this piece is particularly personal, recalling “that early point in spring where flowers are starting to bloom, with many a moment spent with my children lost in joyful discovery of these flowers on walks through our countryside.”

Rather than painting a traditional floral scene, Frances captures the colours, shapes and feelings associated with those early spring discoveries. Loose, energetic brushstrokes in deep forest greens, warm ochres, soft pinks and flashes of golden yellow overlap and intertwine, suggesting emerging flowers, leaves and new growth.

There’s a lovely sense of spontaneity to the composition, almost as though we’re looking through a tangle of foliage, catching little glimpses of colour as we go. The painting feels wonderfully alive, yet its earthy palette gives it a gentle warmth.

Beautifully presented in a generous white St Ives-style frame, the small painting sits at the centre with plenty of breathing space around it, allowing its rich colours and expressive marks to really stand out.

A joyful little piece that celebrates the changing seasons, childhood curiosity and those lovely, ordinary moments spent outdoors.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
