Whispering White Walls

A quiet and introspective mid-century modernist painting, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The composition presents a serene cluster of whitewashed buildings, stacked and softened into an abstracted architectural rhythm. The forms are simplified into clean geometric blocks, evoking a quiet hillside village or sun-bleached Mediterranean town. Two slender, almost silhouetted figures stand near the foreground, adding a subtle human presence and a sense of scale without interrupting the overall stillness of the scene.

The palette is beautifully restrained – cool whites, soft dove greys, and muted sage undertones merge gently into one another, creating a dreamlike haze. The brushwork is smooth and deliberate, with broad, flat planes of colour that minimise detail and heighten the modernist feel. Shadows and edges are suggested rather than defined, allowing the forms to appear as if they are dissolving gently into the light.

The composition, with its quiet tonal variations and refined abstraction, captures an outstanding balance between calm minimalism and poetic atmosphere.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary frame with a layered profile consisting of a soft champagne-gold outer moulding, paired with an inner border in silver. The painting remains in lovely vintage condition, with some light areas of craquelure that do not detract from the overall presentation.
