Symphony of Trees

A striking and brilliantly executed modernist style landscape composition that presents a stylised woodland scene reimagined through bold abstraction, painted in oil onto board and dated 1959.

Tall, vertical shapes suggest stands of trees rising in rhythmic formations, their trunks and canopies broken into geometric planes of green, and pale yellow. Rounded forms in burnt orange and deep red punctuate the foreground, evoking foliage or sculptural boulders, while angular planes of mauve, lilac, and blue sweep across the ground to create shifting patches of shadow and light. In the distance, softened silhouettes of hills and sky fade into pale blues and lavender tones, balancing the composition with calm horizontality.

Painted in a distinctly modernist manner, the artist has used flat, faceted brushstrokes and strong colour blocking to reduce the natural landscape into a dynamic interplay of shape, hue, and texture.
