Spanish Dome
SOLD.
A brilliantly executed cityscape oil composition, painted in 1958 by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.
The composition features a cityscape of buildings including a tall church dome in Spain, set against a soothing clear blue sky.
Containing elements of abstraction and cubism, the artist has reduced the composition down to blocks of contrasting colours, and the deliberate omission of realistic details encourages viewers to focus on the overall structural highlights as well as on colour.
The dominant use of brown, black and cream shades create a warm and earthy atmosphere, and the contrasting tones help to create a sense of depth.
This oil on board is housed in a well-suited gilt frame with an inner linen border, that illuminates the painting. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
